Newcastle are in pole position to sign Chelsea’s Timo Werner on loan should Thomas Tuchel sanction his compatriot’s departure before the window closes in September. That claim arrives from Mark Douglas in his latest report from i news.
Interest in the 26-year-old has been registered with Chelsea. The Magpies are willing to pay a loan fee and a portion of his wages. This is a move that will not gain momentum until later in the window with his future currently uncertain.
Eddie Howe cast doubt that a new arrival would be coming in before the season kicks off against Nottingham Forest in six days. However, the club is pushing for attacking reinforcements with moves on several fronts; including Werner, Leicester City’s James Maddison, and Burnley’s Maxwel Cornet.
Burnley held Cornet out of their season-opening win at Huddersfield yesterday. The news on the Ivorian is encouraging according to Douglas. While the clubs are still apart in negotiations, Cornet is a deal that seemingly could get done quickly.
He has a £17.5m release clause that Newcastle could trigger at any point. However, they are willing to pay more in a structured deal similar to Nick Pope’s, where the £10m is spread out over four years.
Douglas also believes that a second bid could be launched for Leicester City playmaker James Maddison. An initial offer of £40m was rejected for the 25-year-old, who is valued at around £60m. Questions have also asked about winger Harvey Barnes and midfielder Youri Tielemans.
To avoid running afoul of financial fair play regulations, The Foxes must sell in order to fund new arrivals. While that theoretically could benefit Newcastle, Leicester want most of any agreed fee to be paid upfront which has not been the modus operandi this window.

It’s very crap, and that’s coming from a ‘woke lefty’ 😆
Blyth Spartans would beat whoever wins this 20-0.

Comment #43Am I missing something or is £80m being bounded about for Fofana the most insane transfer fee ever touted?
Kid has played less than 3000mins in the PL with the vast majority of them coming before he broke his leg.
What has he actually achieved? Costing more than Van Dijk and it was absolutely clear when he was at Celtic he was going to the top, this kid doesn’t have that same aura at all.
Botman at £35m is a relative steal.

Comment #46Botman was proper gravy yesterday, still think Eddie will start Burn in front of him next week mind. It would be a poor decision from King Ed if he does.
Bruno had to wait an age to get minutes, however imagine he turned up a touch undercooked.
Botman is lean and mean and going to the very Top.

Comment #48We need to make a decisive move for Maddison asap.
Then loan a ST.
The disappointment at not getting a new specialist wide-forward would be offset by getting Maddison.

Comment #50Just wish one of Burn or Botman could switch feet and ideally play them both 🙂
Although Schar has stepped it up and offers something going forward

Comment #51Still would like to get Sesko in before someone else snatches his as well but if we up the bid for Maddison can’t see that happening at this juncture
