How Will Newcastle Do Against Nottingham Forest On Saturday?

The season kicks off on Saturday against promoted Nottingham Forest at St. James’ Park. A hectic pre-season consisting of seven friendlies and two training camps has come to a close.

The summer was planned to perfection as the bulk of the squad got 90 minutes under their belts this past weekend. Eddie Howe will fine-tune the tactics for Forest this week while making the difficult decision on his starting eleven.

Nottingham Forest have been very active in the window with 13 new additions including former-Newcastle targets Jesse Lingard, Dean Henderson, Lewis O’Brien, and Taiwo Awoniyi. Former Magpie Jack Colback is still knocking around at City Ground.

Newcastle have made three excellent signings though just two new faces as Matt Targett’s loan move was made permanent. Nick Pope and Sven Botman have come in to provide competition to Martin Dubravka and Dan Burn. We’ll see if either get their debuts tomorrow.

Newcastle are pushing for further incomings with negotiations underway for Burnley’s Maxwel Cornet. A loan proposal has been registered for Chelsea’s Timo Werner while a second bid for Leicester’s James Maddison is being considered.

It remains unlikely any breakthroughs will occur in time for a new addition to play this weekend. So it’ll be a finely-tuned starting eleven against Nottingham Forest on Saturday.

    From previous

Mate that got my ex it bubbling reading that!

Just to say right now that I’ll play if we need numbers making up! 😉

Would be fantastic if we could relight the fire on that idea and get it going again.

I’m sure even more would be willing to be part of it now after a positive and exciting 10 month of the new owners reign

Wonder how the Refs and VAR will behave this season?

As we are now the top club in the Premiership being the most affluent and also the furthest North at the top of the country means we should get the rub of the Green.

Wasn’t Richard Green something to do with Nottingham and that Hood fella?

    Win

I’d start Anderson, throw him in there and see how he handles the occasion.

I’ve never been excited for a youngster ever, than I have with Elliot and for the last few years and now here we are at the moment he plays his part into the first team.

The boy has some mega talent and the world his is oyster. It’s now up to him

Sales opened this morning for our trips to Molineux and Anfield in August, with both games now available to season ticket holders with 100 or more away points.

I don’t how many times as a Toon fan over the past 60 years that I’ve seen us lose games that we were expected/hoped to win in situations like the opening game against Forest.

We’ve got a settled side, been bang on form in pre-season….

They’ve just been promoted and have got 12 new signings to bed in…

It should be a slam dunk home win, by 2 – 4-0.

I just hope Eddie breaks that “it always happens to us” syndrome.

    Mind…

If we do draw or lose it’s not the end of the world.

Daft things always happen on the first day of the season.

Very confident of a win. Stadium will be bouncing and we’re off the back of a great pre-season. I can see it being a little bit nervey and scrappy for the opening 10-15 minutes, but then we’ll hit our stride and be in control for most of it.

3-0 with a Wilson brace and Miggy to continue his great pre season from with a goal.

I didn’t realise Forest had spent about the same as we did in January apparently. I wonder if people will say they are just buying their way to safety.
It’s always difficult to predict the first game of the season especially against a team with so many new players.

I would like to say we would win, home advantage, Gallowgate Flags, still riding the crest of the wave since Howe took over? Thing is, NF will have a completely new team on the pitch, with no discernible form to monitor? It could be a banana skin for us, but I think we’ll be 3 points better off come Sat evening. Certainly don’t think we’ll have a repeat of last-seasons half season wait for our first 3 points?

It would make a huge difference IMO

I’d say hypothetically that if you and Gav are able to get more names to agree and then that’s proposed to the owners then I think they’d jump on board. Especially as it would be for a good cause and bringing part of the history back.

Whether its this window or Jan or next summer or whenever, we will need to pay the going rates for players. Its not like liverpool are getting Nunez for cheaper just because theyr in the CL or vying for the PL title. If a player joins for less (last year of contract), theyl want that much more in salary.

The academy work will go on in parallel.

It`s always very difficult to predict what will happen in the opening fixtures of any new season as there is always traditionally been shock results, but i`m going for the Toon to win 1-0 to get our season up and running with 3 points in the bag HWTL.

Not convinced the club want paqueta at all,and 40m for maddison just seems like a pointless act….seems to alot undervalue offers going round, whether we’ve actually put these offers in is up for debate but makes us look like and unconvincing so called “big club” so have to wonder if a lot of these offers are just paper flanel tbh

Pug – the 17th (par 5) is an opportunity for a huge drive as you’re really high up! 5th (par 4) is an opportunity for a massive tee shot too but driver would be too big bizarrely. Smart shot is to hit an iron down the hill and it still goes miles!

The 15th is the tricky one you’re referring to with the green way above your head. Dogleg left so have to hit about 200 yards up a bit of a hill and then land it on the two tiered and sloping green. I screwed it up both times I played it! Beautiful hole though!

I think the atmosphere will knock them for 6. They can prepare for it all they like and try to expect it, but I still think it’ll shake them up. Arsenal certainly weren’t ready for it when we dominated them, as the crowd really played a part. I think we’ll be up for it and in their faces and they will struggle to deal with it and the atmosphere. I can imagine none of the clubs in the league would be particularly happy to come to our place first game of the season, as they know the crowd is going to be something else.

I get your point though, Forest are a bit of an unknown especially with their signings. Could either take weeks to gel together and settle, or hit the ground running and surprise people. Just think we have a significant edge with a great pre-season and the atmosphere on our side.

The club has come out and said that they’re not happy about the Maddison bid being public knowledge. Can’t be sure why or how the bid was leaked to the press but you can be pretty sure that we’ll have no idea who the club is bidding for until it happens or is nearly going to happen.

Yeah, you’ve said about the loan thing before but they’ve still spent similar regardless of the reasons. We felt we needed to spend after 14 years of neglect.
I wasn’t having a pop at forest, more the fact that people accused us of buying our way out of trouble, completely ignoring the fact that, since the day EH arrived, we’d been steadily improving.
In fact, looking back, I think we’d have escaped promotion with just a few of those signings although not by such a margin.

it’s an interesting one the discussion about value and that we should bid more etc( if we are bidding at all). As with many things in life something is worth what someone is willing to pay for it.

We will not see this more than in the final week/days of this window. Expect to see many undisclosed fees deals as both sides will not want to be seen as the one to have given in etc.

We should actually be happy the club is not giving in to all these stupid valuations.

    R.E The Maddison fee..

Do journo’s ever proof read their pap, before hitting send?

Trying to imply that we can’t buy him due to Leicester needing the money upfront.
    What a load of tosh!!

We buy him on a staggered payment schedule.
Leicester then show the contract to their bank and say “give me x amount now”

Most other clubs do this,we have definite proof of Burnley doing it..

    Keith Downie:

“If they’re getting quoted £40m, £50m, £60m [for players], they just won’t do it; they will not be held to ransom. And this is the difficulty they’re having in this window at the moment.

“Until they can get things sorted out with the commercial side of things, when they can bring in more revenue to the club and allow them to spend it in future windows, until that is resolved, they’re going to have this problem where they’ve only got a certain amount they can spend.”

What I was trying to say the other day, maybe we won’t overspend this window as sponsorships deals still need to be sorted. If we overspend now and for whatever reason we don’t get those sponsor deals next season, we won’t have as much wriggle room to spend. If we are a bit more conservative now, it means we can also spend a bit next season even if sponsor deals don’t come through. So it’s a safer option to not spend spend spend now with the assumption we’ll have great commercial income next season.

Also explains why we are being more strict when it comes to player valuations and won’t pay it if we feel it’s not fair value.
