Newcastle Launch Second Bid For Playmaker – Report

Newcastle have launched a second bid for Leicester City’s James Maddison. The latest offer exceeds £45m which is a marginal improvement over the first bid of around £35-40m.

Here is the latest on the pursuit of Maddison from Luke Edwards with The Telegraph.

Leicester will likely reject this second bid outright. It falls well short of their £60m valuation and doesn’t appear to contain a large down payment. The bid, as Edwards suggests, could be an attempt to turn Maddison’s head.

Newcastle have been encouraged that Maddison is keen on the move. The 25-year-old has just two years left on his contract, so barring a new one, this could be the time for Leicester to get top value.

Maddison has become the primary target ahead of the season opener against Nottingham Forest on Saturday. Though negotiations are underway for Burnley’s Maxwel Cornet, who has a £17.5m release clause.

A loan proposal is also sitting on Thomas Tuchel’s desk for Timo Werner. Though any movement for the German will likely not occur until later in the window as Tuchel continues his recruitment drive.

Newcastle are willing to pay a loan fee as well as a portion of Werner’s wages – believed to be 50% of the £270k/week salary according to The Chronicle. The Magpies face significant competition as his former club RB Leipzig as well as the mighty Juventus are also interested.

Seems like a fair article by Luke Edwards too. If Caulkin wrote it he’d be praised. Fair’s fair and all that.

Staggered payments are a common practice

Do the staggered payments actually mean anything? if we buy a player for £50m up front with a 5 year contract our expenditure is only counted as £10m a year in FFP terma not £50m in one year. I think its a red herring myself. Happy to be proved wrong if i have misunderstood?

Massive increase in such a short time tells me they are dead serious in getting this deal done as quickly as possible

    Correct mate.

It’s the yearly financials that count not the overall sum.

100% we are getting positive feedback from Maddison and his representatives.

With the speed we are trying to get this done and going back with an increased offer in a matter of days tells me all ducks are aligning

Staggered payments mean everything to the buying club and almost nothing to the selling club, because they can use that as collateral to get a loan for the lump sum if needed. It’s almost a win win for both sides. 50M is a very fair price. It is starting to feel real now a second reasonable bid has gone in.

But I still habe a feeling Leicester will reject it, something is telling me they will try get every last penny. I can see us going to a 3rd bid 55M and then telling them that’s it after that just on principle.

    Lochinvar,

Following up on your post of earlier, I’m intrigued.
How on earth did you come to play a game of tennis against the legend Yvonne Goolagong, and why only one game ?

Maddison would be brilliant, I remember that he got some stick for off field antics but can’t recall if it was anything serious? or did I imagine it?

Maddison also has the same agent as Wood and Trippier

Should be a straight forward deal

Also why does Zaha never get mentioned as potential for right wing? he would up our free kicks and with Trippier to bang them in
In fact buy Zaha and Ward Browse and we’d be sorted for few points each season – bonkers idea?

Agreed with Tino Vinos maddison comments.

The lads got 2 years left. Last year he was rated at £60m.

Come January 18 months left he’s worth £40m ish.

Next summer 1 year left – sub £40m.

Question us do we really want him? (if so pay the £50m)

He could be using this to get a pay rise….

He’s a good player. But a bit of a ‘melt’.

Interesting link, but we need a forward. But I understand the bid of £40m due to his contract now being a wasting asset.

    Let’s see what happens…

If we get Maddison – I think that puts an end to signing Paqueta.

The ladies football was good – but I do think people (some) are suggesting equivalences to the mens game – are using that as an argument to dismiss the ladies game.

Sensible folk know the mens game is of a “higher” quality than the ladies but they are catching up very well.

Does appear that one or two are dismissing the ladies game and at the same time deny their misogynistic leanings at the same time. Mmmmmmm!

If Maddison wants it and we bid say 50M then I believe it’s inevitable he will end up here.

Having an agent we have previously worked well with will help massively

Poor Downie getting all mixed up first he said we wouldn’t go near the 50 million mark, now he is quoting a colleague of his that we bid 50 million.
Not long ago he said we would only spend 35million as that’s all the made up budget has in it.
Almost like they make it up sometimes .

The only thing that makes me uneasy is the two different reported bids. One is 45M staggered and one is 50M including add ons.

This sky sports guy routinely gets things very wrong, that’s a big worry for me, I would have been happier if Keith Downie reported it.

He should stick to bigging up Scumberland and his man crush Brucie.
He was on last night trying to pick an argument mostly with himself over the Women’s team winning the Euros.
The most hated journalist I have ever witnessed by the majority of Newcastle supporters.
