Newcastle have launched a second bid for Leicester City’s James Maddison. The latest offer exceeds £45m which is a marginal improvement over the first bid of around £35-40m.
Here is the latest on the pursuit of Maddison from Luke Edwards with The Telegraph.
#nufc have made a second improved bid for Leicester City’s James Maddison today. Fee is in excess of £45m but payments are staggered. As I’ve said all along, they have been led to believe Maddison wants the move. We shall see. He might also want a new contract!!
— Luke Edwards (@LukeEdwardsTele) August 1, 2022
Leicester will likely reject this second bid outright. It falls well short of their £60m valuation and doesn’t appear to contain a large down payment. The bid, as Edwards suggests, could be an attempt to turn Maddison’s head.
Newcastle have been encouraged that Maddison is keen on the move. The 25-year-old has just two years left on his contract, so barring a new one, this could be the time for Leicester to get top value.
Maddison has become the primary target ahead of the season opener against Nottingham Forest on Saturday. Though negotiations are underway for Burnley’s Maxwel Cornet, who has a £17.5m release clause.
A loan proposal is also sitting on Thomas Tuchel’s desk for Timo Werner. Though any movement for the German will likely not occur until later in the window as Tuchel continues his recruitment drive.
Newcastle are willing to pay a loan fee as well as a portion of Werner’s wages – believed to be 50% of the £270k/week salary according to The Chronicle. The Magpies face significant competition as his former club RB Leipzig as well as the mighty Juventus are also interested.

That second bid doesn’t go in for Maddison without;
A) Encouragement from Leicester to come back to the table and,
B) A willingness from player to want to come.
It’s a quick fire second bid too – suggests that there’s a reason to be optimistic on this one.

Comment #85This is definitely promising on Maddison. Hopefully the staggered payments and add ons are favourable enough for Leicester and this goes through.

I believe it’s only a matter of time and I think like you say Shola over the next few days it will be completed.
It’s gathering pace really quickly and that tells me it’s because Maddison and his representatives want this

I certainly am mate!
I remember being a kid and me and my mates would go to the video shop to rent a film and me and my mate would be looking round the place trying what to decide but our other mate only had a Betamax and there was this little corner by the till for Betamax rentals 😆 didn’t take him long to decide

Comment #91One additional comment on the price for Maddison…
If Cucarella from Brighton is worth £50m, then Maddison for £50m is a legit bargain.

Comment #94Like others on “the blog” I wasn’t a fan of Maddison but…. I’m ready to forgive him for his antics last season…….
If he signs on the dotted line for us!
I think he would be an excellent signing if it comes off……
Here’s hoping! 🙂

#nufc pushing hard to make James Maddison their record signing. Clearly getting encouragement from various sides. My feeling is there’s still significant work to be done to make the deal happen, but also think it would be a hugely significant signing if they can make it happen.

Comment #101Mr Tuff @61, I think you have a point there.
I’m celebrating the win for what it is, Champions of Europe in spite of all that’s happened.
This Maddison thing seems to have some legs. I’ve increased my interest meter to “piqued”.

I recall recording “The Monocled Mutineer” back in 1986 to get the words of a song I liked “Let the Great Big World Keep Turning”
It’s an early 1900’s music hall song that I still sing a Capella.
I’ve since bought the DVD of the programme as it was never repeated on BBC TV.

Comment #104Maddison would be a great signing. He’s got everything. Should be a starter for England. Technically very good and scores and creates an awful lot. He’d probably be the best signing we’ve made in that position since Ben Arfa and Marveaux.

Comment #105I’m confident we’ll get Maddison because we wouldn’t be even bothering to raise the offer to £50 million if we weren’t pretty sure we will get him.
I’m wondering if the owners are building up to a massive 2 or 3 signings before the deadline!

But like others I’m fully preparing myself to do a u turn and start idolising him. Lol lol lol

Fair is fair, Fabrizio Romano now quoting Luke Edwards breaking the news on Maddison.
If Caulkin revealed it guys wud be praising him, and rightly so.
