Sky Sports is backing claims that Newcastle have launched a second bid for Leicester City’s James Maddison. They are reporting the bid is for £50m, which includes add-ons. That is along the lines of what Luke Edwards broke earlier when he reported a structured bid exceeding £45m had been submitted.
Newcastle have gone in with an improved offer for Leicester’s James Maddison, according to colleague @skysports_sheth.
We’re told their second bid is £50m, including add-ons.
Newcastle had £40m offer rejected at the weekend, Leicester value Maddison at £60m #NUFC— Keith Downie (@SkySports_Keith) August 1, 2022
This offer is just £10m off of Leicester’s valuation and would eclipse Newcastle’s record transfer, believed to be around £40m for Joelinton. There are no reports yet of Leicester’s response to the bid.
Newcastle have gone all in on Maddison as he is now the priority target. Depending on how the deal is structured, there could be little left in the budget for a second attacker if Leicester do accept this offer.
This could signal that the pursuit of Maxwel Cornet has been put on the back burner pending the outcome of this latest bid. If Newcastle can land Maddison, focus would most likely shift to the loan market with Timo Werner in our sights.
There is news coming from Fabrizio Romano on Werner. He is reporting that RB Leipzig are making a significant push to bring the 26-year-old back to the Red Bull Arena. He also believes Newcastle have yet to hold talks.
Leipzig are now pushing more than Juventus for Timo Werner, after the meeting with Chelsea on Sunday – still waiting to see if there’s room for a swap deal. ???? #RBLeipzig
He’s the main target for RB Leipzig, leading the race over Juventus. No direct talks yet with Newcastle. https://t.co/YER55Jpx5c

Comment #82So, trying to put together what people are saying on here and what Adam posted earlier from Keith Downie, it would seem that we do have a budget, that we are paying in installments to make the most of it (as other clubs do) and that we do have to be aware of FFP.
Whatever, here’s hoping we get Maddison. (and maybe one other on loan) because then, to me we’ll have had a great window, and none of the above matters. 🙂

Comment #83my biggest issue with Dubs may be 100% my perception totally wrong, but I don’t think he a great communicator out there and he doesn’t seem vocal/helpful – especially when he’s out there with Lascelles they’re like tripping over each other often

Comment #87Just my opinion but I am undecided who is the better keeper, Dubs has not let us down.
My brother in law is a Burnley fan and he states Pope is the best he has seen ever for Burnley.
We need two top keepers, would hate to see Dubs leave, especially if only valuing him at £10 million in the deal.
You never know what can happen though.

I’d rather it be done without Dubs as I agree with what you’re saying about having two top keepers and I don’t want to see him go just yet but on the other hand if it was fo help bring Maddison in who would take us up a few levels on the pitch, it would be hard to say no.

Any news story that ends with “90 mins understands” has as much credibility as “my mate’s nan reckons”, they haven’t a scooby.

Comment #90It’s a bit of a dilemma does getting rid of Dubs get us Maddison ?
Darlow isn’t good enough to be a no 2 keeper in the Premiership so i would hope we are looking at another keeper after that
But the main priority has to be Maddison at all costs he just brings our attack up several levels

Comment #91There seems to be a lot of focus in the media about Werner, however there are also a lot of conflicting reports he is also potentially going to RB Leipzig.
The rumour mill seems to have gone cold on Hudson-Odi though. Wonder if they will perhaps go back and push for him?
Have to say the thought of having both Hudson-Odi and Maddison in midfield sounds perfect to me.
I also wouldn’t write off us getting Cornet either just yet if they payments for Maddison are in instalments.

Comment #93Since 2019 Pope has missed 6 league games with injury, I reckon we’re alright on that front and Darlow is good enough to deputise for a couple of games if necessary. We wouldn’t be looking to sell Dubs to then bring in another GK of comparable quality.

Comment #99Clearly we will not be employing both Pope and Dubs. Seems obvious Dubs is out the door.
On the subject of keepers -female – some posters slagging of the female goalkeepers – on the telly tonight was Peter Shilton (and his missus) Shilton said the standard of the female goalkeeping was good.
So I would think his opinion on this subject would be better than a couple of amateurs on here.

Comment #104I don’t understand those nailing on that Dubs is way better with the ball at his feet and passing than Pope.
Dubs was diabolical until Howe came, constantly hoofing it to nowhere and dithering when he tried to pass it out. Gave at least two goals away last season with daft passes. But, he has defo improved since EH came…
But better than Pope?
Jury out for me.

Is Maddison worth £60 million, I still remember the dive but won’t hold it against the lad, it happens.
I genuinely thought we would bring Paqueta in, the fact nobody else has bought him just makes me think he is Toon-bound.
It’s a nice problem to have chaps, much rather chew the fat over these players than ones of previous transfer windows.

Comment #110Jurys out on Pope passing from back – I thought he had mixed results – a few times when he kicked it out he seemed to miss hit it and the ball bobbled along to our player as to rolling along the grass to the player and he completely sliced one clearance Friday night
Agree with Bills that dubs is kicking has improved a lot but his command of the six yard box worries me

Comment #114We are a different side now under Eddie Howe. Players are giving the keeper far better and safer options to pass it out from the back. Dubs is apparently a decent outfield player too. You watch Pope he isn’t that comfortable receiving or releasing the ball with his feet. It’s just one skill set of course, not the most important in a keeper, but none the less, an asset for a side that wants to build from the back.

Comment #119The most important think with GK in my opinion is to have a clear hierarchy.
If it s not done yet, i guess Howe will tell them before Forest who will be the number one for the times to come.
So if it s Pope and Dubravka want to leave, don t think we should block the move.

Comment #120Yeah, I agree, you want a clear number 1, but you also want the best second choice you can get. It’s good to have that battle for the jersey. Much of this will be down to whether Dubs fancies the move, or fancies his chances of being our number 1.
