Sky Sports is backing claims that Newcastle have launched a second bid for Leicester City’s James Maddison. They are reporting the bid is for £50m, which includes add-ons. That is along the lines of what Luke Edwards broke earlier when he reported a structured bid exceeding £45m had been submitted.
Newcastle have gone in with an improved offer for Leicester’s James Maddison, according to colleague @skysports_sheth.
We’re told their second bid is £50m, including add-ons.
Newcastle had £40m offer rejected at the weekend, Leicester value Maddison at £60m #NUFC— Keith Downie (@SkySports_Keith) August 1, 2022
This offer is just £10m off of Leicester’s valuation and would eclipse Newcastle’s record transfer, believed to be around £40m for Joelinton. There are no reports yet of Leicester’s response to the bid.
Newcastle have gone all in on Maddison as he is now the priority target. Depending on how the deal is structured, there could be little left in the budget for a second attacker if Leicester do accept this offer.
This could signal that the pursuit of Maxwel Cornet has been put on the back burner pending the outcome of this latest bid. If Newcastle can land Maddison, focus would most likely shift to the loan market with Timo Werner in our sights.
There is news coming from Fabrizio Romano on Werner. He is reporting that RB Leipzig are making a significant push to bring the 26-year-old back to the Red Bull Arena. He also believes Newcastle have yet to hold talks.
Leipzig are now pushing more than Juventus for Timo Werner, after the meeting with Chelsea on Sunday – still waiting to see if there’s room for a swap deal. ???? #RBLeipzig
He’s the main target for RB Leipzig, leading the race over Juventus. No direct talks yet with Newcastle. https://t.co/YER55Jpx5c

Comment #121In todays Premiership prices Maddison is a 60 million player he’s proven over a fair few seasons and his numbers get better every season
If Grealish was 100 million ( we know isn’t really worth that much but that was the fee) Leicester will be thinking why let him go for cheap? He’s better than Grealish overall and has better stats

Comment #122Can’t believe that people keep discussing FFP every few sodding days! It’s on repeat and nobody seems to fully understand it so it’s just a bunch of people claiming they do understand it with some calling others idiot/knacker/fool for having a different opinion.
I have 2 choices, I could go through the whole FFP rules and understand them as well as if I was working for a football club or I just assume that the people in recruitment at our club know what they’re doing. Frankly, I don’t benefit in any way from the former, so I’ll stick to the latter. I know they know more than me and it’s their money so that’s good enough for me.

Comment #124Pope v Dubs? That’s a more interesting debate because it’s a close battle and it’s partially down to style and opinions.
For what it’s worth, I think they’ll both stay this season but if Pope cements himself as No. 1 then Dubs will have a decision to make next year of moving on or being part of our project as backup.

Some actually seem to have a pretty good grasp of FFP while others find it an interesting topic of debate to mull over and discuss regardless of their knowledge levels. It’s like any topic of discussion, you can choose to get involved in it or just scroll on by. Live and let live.

Comment #133Ruddy – it’s not that it’s discussed, it’s that it’s discussed virtually every few days as a virtually carbon copy. I don’t find the topic very interesting but it was vaguely interesting the first time, the 81st time it’s dull as dishwater and I’m baffled why the same people want to keep rehashing it. I’d guess it’s a boring topic for most.
I believe they’re changing FFP anyway? I did look it up to see if there was a definitive summary I could just post and put the issue to bed but found they’re changing it soon.
I’ve just never in my life hung around a bunch of passionate football fans in real life and talked about the financial side of transfers…never.

Comment #139Ruddy – I don’t get this “live and let live” stuff when someone isn’t telling anyone else what to do or not to do. FFP is factual, it’s not like Pope v Dubs. If people actually want to learn about something factual like FFP, why don’t they just spend the time reading up on it? Can’t get my head around people spending hours arguing about something factual rather than just learning the facts…

Comment #141I’m of the school of thought that ‘no news is good news’ with regards to the 2nd Maddison bid. I don’t believe a word of 90 mins having accurate info, Bailey is a smoggy WUM and BS merchant so I am operating on the basis that the 2nd bid is alive and kicking and in play.
Let’s see what tomorrow brings folks, I am off to the pit for some beauty sleep. Take care one and all!

This is an older article but this is how I understand FFP regarding transfer fees… To those not interested please skip.
The article could be erroneous but hopefully it was fact checked.
https://bleacherreport.com/articles/1270442-financialfair-play-everything-you-need-to-know-about-controversial-rule
Excerpt…
“Obviously, the biggest factors at many clubs are transfer fees paid and wages. Both of these are important components, but not in a straight forward way.
For example, let us say a team signs a player on a four-year contract for £20 million. In accountancy terms, this £20 million is not “payable”, or perhaps better to say declarable, up front—though under the terms of the agreement between the two teams involved in the transfer, money may indeed exchange hands immediately.
Instead, the cost of the transfer is amortised over the length of the player’s contract, in this case four years.
This means that each “reporting period,” the club will effectively spend (20 divided by four) £5 million on this player.
Indeed, under FFP rules the club could sell the same player for only £15 million two years after buying him and record a profit, despite receiving less than it paid for him originally.
This is because the value of the player has amortised to £10 million with two years left on his deal, meaning the club would record a £5 million profit if they then sold him for £15 million.
Wages will be taken into account for FFP, but this will be touched on in more detail further along.”

Comment #143Ruddy – until I see it on SSN, BBC, or official NUFC site, I won’t believe the 2nd bid is rejected either so perhaps no news is good news. Will have to wait and see how seriously they want him and whether this is a smokescreen for something else…

Final comment on this issue. I don’t see it as people spreading misinformation, I think it is people genuinely discussing a topic that they may not be 100% in possession of the facts on. So yeah, pinch of salt and all that and perhaps not let it bother you so much?

Comment #151Sounds like Leicester are taking the pish now.
£60m asked for Maddison and trying to get Dubs.
Always thought that Rodgers had a Swiss Tony edge to him, wheeler dealer mentality.
They need to stop pretending they’re a top level Euro Super power they’re not. They’ve had their minute of fame and no problems with that. Along with Villa and Everton they seem to have a sort of paint peeling rusty appeal.
Maybe £40m plus Darlow and you have a deal.

Comment #156The trouble is that the football authorities have made it so that we have no option but to discuss the impact of FFP on football clubs’ ability to purchase football players.
It does not control the expenditure of clubs as it is only players transfer fees and wages that are governed. Therefore the rules directly impact on a club’s ability to compete on the pitch.
