Leicester City have officially rejected Newcastle’s latest offer for James Maddison. The bid, which various reports have anywhere from £40-50m, did not come close to matching Maddison’s £60m price tag, especially considering it was a staggered offer.
Sky Sports’ Keith Downie has issued the following update with Newcastle now forced to regroup on whether to make another offer or move on to other targets.
Second Newcastle offer for James Maddison rejected by Leicester. Newcastle deciding whether to continue their pursuit of Maddison or move on to other targets. They don’t want to overpay for players due to FFP regulations. With colleague @skysports_sheth #NUFC https://t.co/Kk9FdMMQZP
— Keith Downie (@SkySports_Keith) August 2, 2022
For any offer to be accepted, Newcastle are just going to have to go for broke with the bulk of the fee paid upfront. Leicester must sell before buying and would also need significant funds on hand to replace their playmaker
In other news, early work on Burnley’s Maxwel Cornet may come to naught. Sky Sports is reporting that West Ham have entered initial talks for the 25-year-old, who has a £17.5m release clause.
Before bidding for Maddison this past weekend, Newcastle started negotiations for Cornet. Reports claimed a structured deal similar to the one reached for Nick Pope was being discussed with the eventual outlay surpassing his release clause amount.
West Ham have now jumped in for the Ivorian, who was held out of Burnley’s 1-0 win at Huddersfield on Saturday. Everton also held talks earlier in the window but were unable to reach an agreement.

Comment #1Think if it was gonna happen we would just be hearing reports of either “offer doesn’t match valuation” or we’re “in negotiations with leicester of the sale”, not flat out rejections

Comment #2He’s worth £50m (heck he’s probably even worth £60m), if we aren’t willing to stump up the cash required for top tier talent then don’t even waste your time bidding.
Very disappointed with our approach to this Maddison transfer I must say.

Comment #6Top player that if the club want they shouldn’t mess about with bids that are obviously too small. Clubs will demand high fees from Newcastle now so either pay up or don’t bid in the first place. Only chance of it happening now is if the lad genuinely wants to join the Toon

Eh? We’re hardly the ones who rejected our own bid to Leicester, so yeah it would seem that we’ve low-balled Leicester twice for Maddison. Reputable sources are claiming it is due to us seemingly being unwilling to bid beyond what we deem to be our own valuation of him (of around £40m, which is laughable)
There is enough information out there from the various journalists commenting on the issue (Downie, Hope, Waugh etc) to form a reasonable conclusion of how we’ve conducted ourselves here, and it’s not great.

Comment #12Great recruitment so far from our board and Leicester can do one if they think any club is going to pay up front these days. Keep the pressure on Leicester concerning Maddison transfer but be aware we are a mid table at least club right now and will only move up so chill the Fu*k up and enjoy our rise to the top.

Comment #13They’re not demanding any more from us than they would others. 50-60m for Maddison is entirely reasonable
People need to stop parroting such things, which amounts to excuse making.
Also falling into the category of excuse making so not to cast a critical eye at owners is:
“We won’t be held to ransom/not going to overpay.”
“If we just pay up that sets a precedent.”
and, my favourite,
“FFP is only being applied to us/we can’t do any more without risking FFP breaches.”.
All bollocks.

Comment #18I can understand not being held to ransom for players like Jack Harrison, Ivan Toney, DCL and the likes, as these are mid-table players who add depth rather than improve the quality of the starting XI, however Maddison would be a marquee signing that would transform our team entirely in the same way Bruno did and Botman will prove to.
As SholaShow says, 50-60m for a player of Maddison’s quality is entirely reasonable.

Comment #20Cleve Daredevil and Punisher were the best of the netflix shows. I thought Iron Fist was ok. However Jessica Jones and Luke Cage were horrendous. Pointless lesbian scenes and so much boring drama. Hated it.
Best Punisher is Ray Stevenson. However the Thomas Jane one had the best music track The Skull

“Lack of faith”? Sorry, but I don’t operate on faith. I form opinions on things that have happened, not on the hope of the things that might happen. If you’ve followed my comments on our transfer dealings I have been effusive in my praise of the work that has already been done in the transfer market when it was due, and now I am critical of our conduct in the transfer market when it is due.
Does previous comments from our owners suggest that they will back Howe in the transfer market? Yes. Do we now have shrewed operators in charge? Yes. Have we wasted the past few days being made look like tire-kickers by submitting two bids c.£40m for a top-tier player who is obviously worth more than that? Yes.
Let’s not let a desire to see our owners as infallible cloud our judgements eh?

Im happy what the club has done with the defence, for once our goal difference will be a lot better, but it will only be better when we sign quality attacking players, that’s why I’m so desperate for the club to get a player like him who’s got experience and will get double figures with hopefully Wilson,

Comment #25And all I’m getting at Ruddy is that yes we submitted a low-ball offer, which I would expect to be the beginning of negotiation, where Leicester would be invited to potentially respond to the bid with what they feel the player is worth. Instead, they’ve just gone straight to the public, and it is them whom have played the media card, making us look like tyre kickers as you put it. To me, this is Leicester attempting to either coax a bidding war, which so far nobody else seems interested in entering, or its a complete dig as they know we’re far more likely to finish higher in the table than they will. They’re terrified of us is how I see it.

Comment #27Ideal situation would be if Maddison handed in a transfer request. Having said that, it could just make Leicester dig in.
People talk about being annoyed at our so called low ball tactics, just pay £60m I hear.
Actually I find that desperation more annoying. Let’s pull our pants down and bend over.
I understand that criticism when we had As**ey in charge but I think we should have more faith in our current owners.

Interpret the leaking of the bid however way you want, it doesn’t change the fact that we’ve made two fairly derisory bids for a player obviously worth infinitely more than £40m. That’s the long and the short of it.

Comment #33My point is, that Leicester seem to be making a deliberate to make us look out of order. Fairly certain I read their initial offer for Ayoze Perez was round the 12M mark. I believe he went for a few quid more than this. That’s how negotiation works.

Leicester are according to the story tellers, wanting the fee for Maddison up front which any club trying to avoid FFP rule penalties will not entertain. The fee is NOT the problem, the up front payment is mate. ‘It’s sell a bridge in Brooklyn’
