Eddie Howe vowed yesterday to not stop until a couple of attacking players are added to his squad. He made a sobering admission that the number of targets is now quite small.
Here is some of what Howe told Sky Sports on Tuesday:
“The pool of players we are looking at is actually quite small. It’s not a huge amount of names. That’s why the deals become difficult.”
The shortlist could be shrinking by the day as other clubs continue to siphon from Newcastle’s pool of targets. There are reports today on three of our targets that could be a cause for concern.
Fabrizio Romano is reporting that interest in RB Salzburg’s Benjamin Sesko is increasing. Manchester United are contemplating a push to land the promising striker, who has been compared to Manchester City’s Erling Haaland, due to his size and pace.
Key days for Benjamin Šeško’s future with contacts ongoing. Manchester United know they have to be fast on this deal, after meeting with agent days ago. ??? #MUFC
There are 2 more clubs in the race.
Šeško will make a decision soon with his agent and family. pic.twitter.com/c0aHN74c9y

Newcastle have yet to make a concerted push for Sesko. Though after his agent’s antics on Tyneside last month, local journalists confirmed the Slovenian was on our shortlist. Like many of our other targets, his price tag could be too lofty this summer.
Another striker whose price tag kept Newcastle at bay earlier in the window is Everton’s Dominic Calvert-Lewin. Widely considered Howe’s preferred striker entering the summer, Everton’s valuation made bidding a pointless endeavor.
There were claims Newcastle would wait to make an offer until later in the window and see if Calvert-Lewin’s head was turned. However, that option may have been taken off the table with the news the striker has suffered yet another injury.
The Athletic’s Greg O’Keeffe is reporting Calvert-Lewin is in doubt for Everton’s season opener against Chelsea this weekend. From the tone of his article, it could be another significant injury for the 25-year-old.
Accurate detail on the severity of this is scarce on this & with what happened last season everyone around #Dominic Calvert-Lewin is being v protective and guarded but it’s worrying news for #Everton https://t.co/KopdxzlMMv
— Greg O'Keeffe (@GregOK) August 3, 2022
One target that seems like a straightforward proposition is Burnley’s Maxwel Cornet. Talks have been held on a structured deal that would surpass his £17.5m release clause. However, Newcastle went for Leicester’s James Maddison over the weekend.
West Ham are now leading the chase for the 25-year-old. With Frankfurt’s Filip Kostic now off the table as Juventus try to land the Serbian international, the Hammers have turned their attention to Cornet. Though they are also in the process of snapping up Lille’s excellent young midfielder Amadou Onana.
As just discussed on @talkSPORT #WHUFC are in for Maxwel Cornet after failing to agree deal for Kostic. Believe they are looking at a permanent deal. https://t.co/r2OScgCmNC
— Alex Crook ????? (@alex_crook) August 3, 2022
Newcastle could have some targets who haven’t hit the headlines just yet. The bid for Maddison came straight out of the blue over the weekend. Hopefully, the pool is a bit larger than Howe is letting on with some unknown gems waiting to be snapped up.

Lascelles is younger than Burn as well. Just do not get any clues at all from the pre season games.

Comment #165Great managers are superb judges of a player. Eddie’s signings have been better than sound which bode’s well for years to come. No disaster’s yet..
Sir Bobby’s great quality was spotting talent then managing it, i am gunna say tactics probably werent his strongest point.
Just a great human being.
Eddie does the lot.

I rate him highly mate and I think one day he will go down as the greatest striker theres ever been. R9 is the best I’ve seen but I think Erling has it all in the bag. He is the modern day striker mixed with the old generation centre forward.
City won the league with no striker so foot knows what’s going to happen for them next season with one of the best young forwards around.

Comment #177re:MLS – the best American talents are now joining European clubs before they are drafted into MLS *or* after a year or two, so the transfer fees are still miniscule. You just don’t see many established “stars” moving which made Miggy to Newcastle unique. Most of the “stars” in MLS are aging players.

Comment #179Schar will start w/ Botman
No way Lascelles gets in ahead of Schar who replaced him in the lineup last season.
I just don’t see Burn keeping Botman out. If he had joined late in the preseason maybe but he’s had a full camp and games and oozes class.

Not much time left for the last three players to register…
Only 2 of the original 18 are left to register the code on H2H D3…
chancel be a fine thing
catchy in Norway
The late application from Gillmag has been processed, and the code sent out by Neil.
If all 3 join before the deadline, we will have 19 in D3, meaning each week one player will play against a dummy ID which will have been awarded the average FPL score for that week.

Comment #189Prediction of 4th is based on capabilities of mangers to get the best out there squad.
Klopp, Pep. No worries, they are ok. Nearly as good as Wor Eddie.
Conte – maybe this year ok, but clearly struggles to handle any team over a couple of year.
Tuchel – think crack might form. Too many purples. Could be wrong mind. Decent fella.
Arteta – already struggled last year to control squad and application.
Haagan Daas – Man Utd is toxic, fans will turn quick once he bins Dosser Ronaldo and they lose a couple of home games.
Certainly 5th but maybe 4th based on King Eddie being the new Sir Bobby Keegan.

Ow do pal. I’m well thanks for asking hope all is good with you and yours.
Pulisic would be fantastic wouldn’t he…
I’ve been a huge fan of his since he came to Chelsea and think he would transform our right side. Fast, skilful and technically gifted and is already proven in the league. If at all possible he would be an amazing signing.

Comment #193ESPO United, I have a friend in the US who says the same thing. His son was a top college player and went straight to Holland to play there because Europe is where it’s at if you want fame and fortune, as a young player at least. In his case it didn’t happen because of persistent injuries, but I think that’s the pathway most will follow. Same as Australian football really. The talented kids go to Europe and try their luck because the domestic competition is nowheres-ville really

“I’m pretty chilled. For the 1st time in donkeys we won’t be fighting a relegation battle!! Fab”
is excellent news, but how do you know that?
Most are saying our new keeper is at about the same level as Dubravka. (I think he’s better, btw).
Targett we had last year.
So, can this team shoot up the table via Botman? In cold numbers, how many points more is he worth?
Honestly, mega bucks and all that, I expected a LOT more by this time, just a few days before the PL starts.
As we stand, which teams exactly have we leapfrogged? How have we secured and improved the “goals for” stat? The “goals conceded” is also very important, granted, but that’s a bigger concern for relegation candidates.
Anyway, like I said previously, expect drama in the last minutes of the window.

Comment #200I’ll stick with us finishing 8th based on current squads, West Ham 7th, just think they have slightly more depth.
Villa 9th, might have a better squad than us… might but Howe is better than Gerrard!
Leicester, Wolves and Palace battling for 10th.
Leeds could go down or could surprise, Aaronson is one to watch. Keeping Bamford will be key though.
3 from Southampton, Everton and the promoted trio to go down.
