Sky Sports is reporting that West Ham have triggered Maxwel Cornet’s £17.5m release clause with the forward now en route for a medical. Newcastle held talks on a structured deal for Cornet last week.
Here is the latest from Keith Downie on the 25-year-old.
Maxwel Cornet travelling to London for a West Ham medical reports @skysports_sheth. That after The Hammers met his £17.5m release clause. Cornet, a former teammate of Bruno Guimarães at Lyon, had been someone Newcastle had looked at in recent weeks #NUFC
— Keith Downie (@SkySports_Keith) August 4, 2022
David Moyes added Gianluca Scamacca from Sassuolo earlier in the window and now has Cornet as another attacking option. The Hammers will not have to fret as much over striker Michail Antonito’s fitness as in previous campaigns.
West Ham have also agreed on a deal for Lille midfielder Amadou Onana, though personal terms have not been reached. Everton have jumped into the fray with reports claiming Onana prefers Goodison Park.
Newcastle will have to remove another target out of their pool of targets, which Eddie Howe admitted earlier in the week was not a vast one. Hopefully, another surprise bid, à la James Maddison, is in the offing as reinforcements up front are sorely needed.

Comment #7Not sure what we were doing here. Were we keeping the cash for a major signing such as Maddison, and hence went for a structured deal?
If he was a genuine target then it really is puzzling

Comment #10I’m sure we’ve been offered 100’s of players. Maybe opened tentative talks with say 10 -12.
Significant negotiations, offers with maybe 6, and I include Botman, Pope and Targett in that 6.
Ekitike was another, Maddison looks real + 1 other we don’t know about.
What the clubs actually doing will be a far cry from what agents/press and itk’s claim.

Comment #11Jonathan Woodgate: I love the players Arsenal have brought in and they will be close to the top four again this season. I don’t see West Ham doing as well this time and although people might talk about Newcastle if they make a good start, I think they will make the Europa League – that would be a successful season for them.
Good lad Woodgate! 🙂

Comment #13Overall the fact that very little has leaked out about our transfer interests this summer is a good sign of the level of control over communications and the professionalism that exists within the club now.

Rob no offence mate but i don`t think it`s so preposterous for Shola to think Villa could finish higher than us as they also have some quality players, i personally think we will finish slightly higher than Villa, but it certainly wouldn`t be a huge shock if we didn`t in my opinion Rob HWTL.

Who blinks first…?
Be a great buy but I imagine a very difficult deal to do right now…
Heard it will be the last approach today for Maddison from the club…
Hopefully it’s an acceptable bid
Mund, so you have been told, that today is the last time we bid for Maddison.
Oh Jesus,Mary and Joseph and the wee donkey..
You have a direct line to Dan Ashworth don’t you?
Ya little tinker, fancy keeping this a secret from the blog…

In the season we lost the Prem to Man U….
Four mates of mine used to chip in and put a big bet of the winners of the four leagues – not all of them Toon supporters.
Guess what…
They had all three right bar the Prem going into the last match – and they had Man U to win the Prem.
Man U were almost certain to take title, they did, and they won £34,000 – you my have it at the time in the Chron.
My gutted feeling on losing the title race was only slightly abated by the free bar they put on for our group of mates after the match at the Three Mile in Gosforth.
Mind… the following year not a bookie around would take their bet again.

Comment #39IF Leicester manage to keep all of their players,I can see them having a good season..
No Europe is going to be a massive plus this season, due to the debacle in Doha!
The season is already condensed because of it,then after GW 6 the fixtures become ridiculous, for those in Europe.
