New Magpie Forced To Adapt Quickly As Howe Has Decisions To Make For Saturday

Eddie Howe has a few selection headaches ahead of Saturday’s season-opening match against Nottingham Forest. Two of those involve new signings Nick Pope and Sven Botman. One of the glaring questions to be answered is have they done enough to unseat Martin Dubravka and Dan Burn.

The jury is still out on whether they have but Howe may provide a clue during his press conference tomorrow. While these are difficult decisions, one positive is Howe cannot go wrong with whoever he selects as Botman, Burn, Dubravka, and Pope all seem up to the task.

As Nick Pope recently did with The Athletic, Botman has provided an interview to Craig Hope in The Mail. Pope revealed that Eddie Howe gave him no assurances he would be the automatic number one, which Botman will have also been told.

The situation is very different between the two players. Pope is a Premier League veteran with over 140 appearances under his belt. Botman, at just 22, is still getting acclimated to life in England, and all that entails.

During his interview, Sven revealed his surprise at the intensity level during training under his new manager. Here is some of what he told Hope:

“I certainly need to adapt!. There is a big difference here. Yeah, I was a bit surprised.

“I knew the tempo in the Premier League was high, but training as well?

“There is no rest between drills. It is, “Go, go, go”. Everything is 200 per cent. But that’s a good thing. The manager is clear what he demands from us.

“If we want to reach that level, we have to demand a lot from ourselves.”

We should see a very different side take the pitch on Saturday as compared to the start of last season when fitness levels proved to be sub-standard. Howe has made it a priority since day one to be one of the fittest squads in the league.

Hopefully, that will help provide a quick start out of the gate. Newcastle have a couple of winnable matches to start the campaign – at home against Forest and away to Brighton – before a difficult stretch including Manchester City at home then away trips to Wolves and Liverpool.

The window will then slam shut after those five matches. How they go could play a major role in who comes through the door. The club are committed to adding two attackers by September, though have so far not been able to land priority targets.

Expectations for the season will be tentatively high, especially if a marquee forward is added. While Howe will likely not give away his aims for this season, Botman had no qualms with putting Newcastle’s name in the race for a place in Europe saying:

“It is no longer a club just trying to stay in the Premier League”

“It’s a club with a big plan. They want to reach the top. That’s why I’m here.

“Europe is definitely a goal this season. I believe we can achieve that. I just hope people don’t already have it in mind that we’ll finish top four. You need time, it is step by step.”

    I’st game season 20/21
West Ham United (away) Sept 12 2020

    WHU 0 Newcastle Utd. 2
Can’t recall who scored the first goal but it may have been Wilson the second was scored by Hendrick.

The next game was against Brighton and I was shocked that we got beat 3 – 0 at home!

Botman isn’t a headache. He starts. There’s no decision to make.

Going by player’s brought so far!

Matty targett for £15 million , thought he was excellent on loan, so no brainer !

Nick pope for £10 million , was definitely Burnley’s best player in a poor side and made some top saves !

Sven botman for £35 million, one of the best young center backs in Europe last season!

I personally don’t think we’ve done bad so far in the transfer window!

And plenty of time to still bring one or two in 🙂

We will deffo get at least one attacker in,who or what position I’ve no idea.

I would stick a massive offer in for Maddison (if he has indicated that he want’s to come)
Then get Dennis for peanuts… 😀

We are still involved in talks with Hudson odoi though..

My Team for Nottingham Forest game
    Pope,
    Trips, Share, Bots, Targett,
    S. Longstaff, Bruno, Joelinton,
    Almiron, Wilson, ASM

Very hard lines on Dubs & Big Dan but I’m sure their turn will arrive again at some point in the proceedings.

However I still, sadly, feel Dubs can be a factor in a possible Maddison deal

    John,

Sorry should have read .com a bit more clearly, it’s opening home games not opening games in general, my mistake.

Also, I ignorantly forgot the delay to the start of that season due to C19

Sadly the only opening day win win at West Ham.

    20. Newcastle United – 5 points

The Magpies have momentum from a positive end to last season – but have traditionally struggled on the first day of the season with just one win and two draws from their last 10 opening day fixtures.

Madrid’s training ground was sold to the city authorities for €501 million (£436m/$606m) in 2001 after a reclassification of the land , nowt to do with the Spanish government . Local councils help their clubs all over Europe.

That small pool of players we’ve been fishing in has just gotten considerably smaller now Cornet is off to West Ham. I wasn’t crazy about him personally but he would have been an inexpensive way to improve our squad depth. Given we’d been keeping tabs on him all summer yet never made a move lends me to hope that it is because we’ve other (better) deals lined up.

I think we havent had any luck in getting a RW or CF.
Hence, we thought we would try to get Maddison cause of Leicesters struggles.

Do not expect too much come the end of the window. In the attacking sense, we cannot get the Dan Burns of defence. We already have Almiron. A serious upgrade may not happen, in which case we will wait till the next window.

I didn’t think that was true. It sounds very “soccer sauce” or “IndyKaila” for anyone who remembers the best (or worst?) of Twitter ITKs.

Doubt highly we’d leak info to TalkSport after their treatment of Staveley when she had to make an absolute mug of Simon Jordan live on air.

First really big test for Eddie…

And, the unity in the camp…

If Pope and/or Botman get the nod both Dubs and Burn will have genuine reasons to be a bit brassed off given their huge part in last season’s revival. Plus, their big mates in the squad will probably sympathise.

That’s not to say I don’t agree with both new guys starting, whatever Eddie decides will be good for me.

But, after nigh on 40 years in management I know that 100% team spirit never lasts. There are always those who get brassed off, moan to others, and find listeners and sympathisers.

It’s just a matter of who, and how long it takes.

How Eddie breaks any bad news, the reasons he gives, and how he deals with any feelings of unfairness are one of the real tests of management.

A certain Alex Ferguson at Man U was brilliant at man management, and ruthless at getting rid of the moaners and sh”t stirrers no matter how good a player they were.

I know it’s early days for Eddie, but those two decisions for Saturday are massive.

If we’d wanted Cornet he’d be here.

We are a far more exciting prospect than WH even though they’ve done well recently.

I still think Maddison will end up here.

Leicester, I reckon, will think that Fofana could be worth £80-£100M if he performs again this season. They have said he isn’t for sale, end of, but they are obviously prepared to release Maddison for the right prices.

    Watch this space.

West Ham are doing all the right things. Missing out on Cornet is another disaster for us.

    Dubravka
    Trippier
    Schar
    Botman
    Lewis
    Murphy
    Guimaraes
    Joelinton
    Saint-Maximin
    Almiron
    Wilson

That’s our best 11 at the moment.
