New Magpie Forced To Adapt Quickly As Howe Has Decisions To Make For Saturday

Eddie Howe has a few selection headaches ahead of Saturday’s season-opening match against Nottingham Forest. Two of those involve new signings Nick Pope and Sven Botman. One of the glaring questions to be answered is have they done enough to unseat Martin Dubravka and Dan Burn.

The jury is still out on whether they have but Howe may provide a clue during his press conference tomorrow. While these are difficult decisions, one positive is Howe cannot go wrong with whoever he selects as Botman, Burn, Dubravka, and Pope all seem up to the task.

As Nick Pope recently did with The Athletic, Botman has provided an interview to Craig Hope in The Mail. Pope revealed that Eddie Howe gave him no assurances he would be the automatic number one, which Botman will have also been told.

The situation is very different between the two players. Pope is a Premier League veteran with over 140 appearances under his belt. Botman, at just 22, is still getting acclimated to life in England, and all that entails.

During his interview, Sven revealed his surprise at the intensity level during training under his new manager. Here is some of what he told Hope:

“I certainly need to adapt!. There is a big difference here. Yeah, I was a bit surprised.

“I knew the tempo in the Premier League was high, but training as well?

“There is no rest between drills. It is, “Go, go, go”. Everything is 200 per cent. But that’s a good thing. The manager is clear what he demands from us.

“If we want to reach that level, we have to demand a lot from ourselves.”

We should see a very different side take the pitch on Saturday as compared to the start of last season when fitness levels proved to be sub-standard. Howe has made it a priority since day one to be one of the fittest squads in the league.

Hopefully, that will help provide a quick start out of the gate. Newcastle have a couple of winnable matches to start the campaign – at home against Forest and away to Brighton – before a difficult stretch including Manchester City at home then away trips to Wolves and Liverpool.

The window will then slam shut after those five matches. How they go could play a major role in who comes through the door. The club are committed to adding two attackers by September, though have so far not been able to land priority targets.

Expectations for the season will be tentatively high, especially if a marquee forward is added. While Howe will likely not give away his aims for this season, Botman had no qualms with putting Newcastle’s name in the race for a place in Europe saying:

“It is no longer a club just trying to stay in the Premier League”

“It’s a club with a big plan. They want to reach the top. That’s why I’m here.

“Europe is definitely a goal this season. I believe we can achieve that. I just hope people don’t already have it in mind that we’ll finish top four. You need time, it is step by step.”

Alex Ferguson is a legend at Manure and rightly so but he left at the right time and the club was already in decline.
I wonder how he would manage the ‘superstars’ in todays social media driven world , he was miffed with Beckham being media driven but now the whole team are.
It’s mad that players such as Ronaldo can make $1,604,000 for a single instagram post

    Brendan Rodgers:

“I became aware towards the end of the season that the club would have to balance it’s books, then of course that becomes very difficult.

“The club will not look to spend money they don’t have and that is where the club is stable and they will always be very sensible.”

“It would have to be about trimming the squad or selling your assets [to make new signings]. That’s something that the club are looking closely at.

“It’s where we’re at. The squad needs to get trimmed. Until that happens, I have to concentrate on the players that I have.”

Rednose ran manu down, purposely… he’s a jealous god, and wanted to break the continuity. So moyes(his fall guy/pick) couldn’t succeed.
He made sure it was an aging team.

We’re entering a phase of the transfer window where clubs needing to sell players need to make up their minds. If they leave it too late into the window then they’re not giving themselves much time to buy a replacement.

The likes of Leicester might need the money, but they also have positions to fill for who they lose, such as a goalkeeper in Leicester’s case.

    Mund,

Rodgers is just very fortunate that his best 11 is very, very good. As long as he keeps his best players fit he has little to worry about. It’s keeping them happy that’s the potential problem. If one of their best players decides they want to leave he could have a massive problem.

    You think BR will/can survive?
    Has he lost the lockeroom?
    Is he a busted flush?
Can he coach for more than a couple of seasons?

There should be some sort of time-out / locking device on FPL to stop you tinkering with your team every 10 minutes!

What are you saying man? That would ruin the fun of FPL pre-season!

And in response to the other day, yes, we can agree on five up/five down for the H2H this year, with no faffing about with people’s overall score and stuff like that. We’ll see how that goes, eh?

That’s going to be the problem in keeping them happy as we well know as a fanbase what that is a like and how easily it becomes a problem.

Leicester have a really good team some brilliant players but if they don’t see progression they get itchy feet.

If not this summer they will definitely lose out on those stars by next summer.

I also found it eerie familiar to what we’ve heard and seen over the years with Ashley’s reign.

Thankfully we won’t ever have to worry about that anymore

With all of the players we’ve been linked to by various parts of the media, how many of them are we confident are/were genuine links? Ekitike – Yes. Maddison – Yes. Harrison – Maybe. Any others? None that I can think of.

    Mund,

And for considerably less than they are worth now since Maddison only has 2 years left, the other lad 1, and if Fofana turns out to be a French Bramble then they are royally screwed.

With Leicester specifically, I think they’re banking on Fofana leaving for a significant sum, and possibly Tielemans as well, who only has a year left on his contract and is unlikely to sign a new deal.

I think Maddison is their safety net and they don’t want to lose him this season.

    Mund/Dr Gloom,

I think the difference between us under Ashley and Leicester is that if they say they have to balance the books and manage their finances sensibly then they most likely are going through a rough patch financially.

As it turns out following the takeover and with zero additional commercial income, we had capacity to buy players and build, they just chose not to.

Exactly, plus in 12 months time if Maddison has another season like last season much bigger clubs will be in for him. He’ll be at city as a long term replacement for De Bryune.

We really need to get him in now or it’ll never happen.
