Newcastle Confirm Squad Numbers For Upcoming Season

Newcastle have confirmed the squad numbers ahead of the new season. There aren’t too many changes of note though Kieran Trippier will take the number 2 shirt with Ciaran Clark on loan at Sheffield. Trippier wore 15 last season.

Other changes are Matty Longstaff taking the number 27. Longstaff had two loan spells last season and previously had the number 4 shirt. That will now be worn by new signing Sven Botman.

Matt Targett keeps the number 13 which he wore when on loan. Nick Pope will wear the number 22 while Kell Watts has been given the number 31. Kell is currently recovering from knee surgery.

Elliot Anderson gets the number 32 which he has worn throughout pre-season. During his press conference this morning, Eddie Howe stated that Elliot could be an integral member of the squad depending how the window unfolds.

Here are the numbers for the upcoming campaign.

1 Martin Dúbravka
2 Kieran Trippier
3 Paul Dummett
4 Sven Botman
5 Fabian Schär

If Newcastle spend 60-70 mill there is no guarantee that player will be a legend for us he might flop. There is always that risk.

Howe said this earlier in his interview which explains a lot for me and stops me wondering wtf is going on with transfers.

“…. the details of the transfer have to fit both sides. That’s not always been easy to align so it’s about the right player – it’s not about signing any player. It’s very easy to sign this name, that name.”

I am glad he has acknowledged its not that hard to buy players, other clubs seem to do is almost daily.

He is saying, they are buying average players that we don’t want perhaps ?

At the moment the players we want doesn’t seem to match the money we have. I am not confident we will sign anybody else other than some loans.

Fine with me, but I wish they were a bit more upfront about this weeks ago. It is starting to get close to the `couldnt get them over the line`.

Tagliafico for £3m or Cucurella for £60m? It’s madness. Could get R.Guerreiro for about £25m. Much better player.

I don’t see why we can’t sign Allasane Plea for £5m. Decent player and better than Wood. More mobile.

That Robin Gosens would have been a better signing for Chelsea at £13.5m. Could have saved £47.5m and put it towards other players.

What do you people think our goal is for this year?

It seems by our reasonably frugal summer so far that we want to be a mid-table team. 10th ish.

I understand the patience part of it but it seems a bit underwhelming to not be aiming much/any higher than we did last season.

I know last season thanks to Bruce we only had a half a season but these were extraordinary times. Feel good factor of new owners etc and they did extremely well.

I am not being negative but I am pretty disappointed we are not trying to push for top 8. We would need more players for that.

I wonder if it is simply, we cannot afford to yet.

Not much communication to us coming from the top anymore either.

Patience is difficult when you don’t know the full story.

    On who we can sign…

There is a big difference trying to sign top players like Nunez, or players like Ekitike who the likes of PSG want….

To signing the likes of Cornet or Dennis who are available for £17M-£25M.

The first lot we can’t just wave our wallet yet and expect them to come because we can’t compete with what the elite clubs can offer in terms of Chamos Lge and trophies.

The second bracket we can compete, but how many forwards in that bracket have we been linked to, compared to the number we actually wanted to sign?

Apart from Wood, we’ve bought exceptionally well for not exceptional prices.

Our buying team haven’t suddenly lost that ability, that’s why I’m happy to judge the window at the end. Not jump to negative conclusions or chuck in veiled criticism with nearly a month to go.

Short memories and all of that.

No need to criticise them for sure. No doubt they know what they are doing.

The problem for us fans, is we don’t know what they are doing and we dont really know their plan. So we have to speculate and judge based on what we see happening, or not happening.

A very sensible approach to judge them when it closes. I like to complain as it happens as to get something done about it. Of course, moaning about this on here makes no difference whatsoever but its a bit of fun.

Every fan handles it differently. I wish i had the patience not to check the news for no news so much.

Just commenting to ask if anyone’s gonna call out SirBobbyTheGreat as Kets? Literally couldn’t be more obvious, although he’s clearly trying to tone it down a bit in fear of getting another ban. Would love to know what the story is with that guy. Have read this blog since the early days and used to think he was a surrealist genius. Suffice to say I don’t feel that way anymore…

I think Forest will let Colback go at the end of the window. Seems like they’re bringing in that Swiss midfielder from Atalanta. A few more quality signings and they will be safe this season.

Would only be proper that Jack Colback gives away a free kick for Forest at the edge of the box that Trippier puts in the top corner. Lord knows he did that too often when playing for us 🙂

By my reckoning 30 players have been given squad numbers and of that 30 I don’t think there are many under the age limit to not count.

So assuming we do have another couple of signings there is quite a few who will be omitted from the final 25!

Bills, I broadly agree with you. However, Wood was a “must need” signing. We needed to get a proven Premier League striker in. Sadly it did not work out. We did ok with him in the team though.
