Newcastle have thoroughly dominated the proceedings at St. James’ Park but have lacked a creative spark in the final third. Forest were held to just three shots with the backline defending very well when needed.
Eddie Howe had the lads set up in his 4-3-3 with Pope in goal behind a back four of Trippier, Schar, Burn, and Targett. The midfield was Guimaraes, Willock, and Joelinton. Almiron was on the right and Saint-Maximin on the left as Wilson led the line.
Newcastle started brightly on the front foot with 4 corners, a deep free-kick, and 5 shots in the opening ten minutes. None of the shots tested Dean Henderson but the lads were in the ascendancy early.
Newcastle continued their dominance piling on the corners but without testing Dean Henderson too much. In the 20th minute, Joelinton blasted a bouncing effort from outside the area that Henderson had to parry away.
Joelinton came close in the 30th minute after he slalomed into the area. His effort dribbled wide of the far post ending Newcastle’s best chance of the half so far.
Wilson had an excellent chance just 4 minutes later. Willock lofted a ball into the box as Wilson pulled away from his marker. He couldn’t create any power on his header as it tamely landed in Henderson’s waiting hands.
After an excellent tackle by Burn on Brennan Johnson, Schar played a crossfield pass to Saint-Maximin down the left. Allan cut inside before launching a low effort which Henderson comfortably handled.
Newcastle enter the half without their breakthrough despite having 66% of possession with 14 shots. The cutting edge has been lacking with the bulk of Dean Henderson’s saves being very comfortable. The few times Forest ventured forward, Newcastle defended very well.

Comment #3Hard work but what I expected against a team giving 100% to get something from their first game back in the EPL after 23 years.

Comment #5Very decent half, just missing a goal or two or even three from the lads. They’ll tire towards end of second half and we can hopefully punish them by eventually taking our chances.
This does clearly show Eddie and the new owners that we definitely need attacking options this summer window either an attacking midfielder and/or a striker. None of this FFP talk that he’s been given to the media. Surely nufc aren’t the only ones who have to stick to FFP rules, when other teams spend without hesitation.
HWTL for the second half.

Comment #6i dont even care if newcastle lose. theyve been a joy to watch
Joelinton is a beast in the middle. i think if we were to sign Paqueta, newcastle might have the best midfield in the world. willock is no slouch, he’s put in the work today, something that i normally dont ssee
niakhate having a great game for Forest. i cant see their defense holding out in the second half though

Comment #7Miggy blew the best chance of the half. Turned away from goal instead of meeting the pass with a first-timer.
Otherwise, can’t say a negative word about anyone on the team.

Comment #14Play wise, we are only missing a goal.
We looked sorted all over the pitch, created many chances, and looked strong at the back. And on this showing, Forrest are my big tip to go down. And Everton

Comment #15The domination is a joy to watch.
Bruno’s passes were dictating most of our attacking move.
Almiron on the right wing was not perfect but most of the threats were his cutback. His decision of not shooting is shocking though.
Wilson was quiet and he needed to nail that header.
Joelinton was confident and the little wide was unlucky.
ASM passed more but yet to create real threat.
Wilock was industrious.

Comment #35Schar clashing heads — which is just about a banker every single game.
You’d think after years of clashing heads, Schar would have started shying away from headed duels by now. Simply fearless.
