Dominant Newcastle Looking For Breakthrough In Scoreless First Half Against Forest

Newcastle have thoroughly dominated the proceedings at St. James’ Park but have lacked a creative spark in the final third. Forest were held to just three shots with the backline defending very well when needed.

Eddie Howe had the lads set up in his 4-3-3 with Pope in goal behind a back four of Trippier, Schar, Burn, and Targett. The midfield was Guimaraes, Willock, and Joelinton. Almiron was on the right and Saint-Maximin on the left as Wilson led the line.

Newcastle started brightly on the front foot with 4 corners, a deep free-kick, and 5 shots in the opening ten minutes. None of the shots tested Dean Henderson but the lads were in the ascendancy early.

Newcastle continued their dominance piling on the corners but without testing Dean Henderson too much. In the 20th minute, Joelinton blasted a bouncing effort from outside the area that Henderson had to parry away.

Joelinton came close in the 30th minute after he slalomed into the area. His effort dribbled wide of the far post ending Newcastle’s best chance of the half so far.

Wilson had an excellent chance just 4 minutes later. Willock lofted a ball into the box as Wilson pulled away from his marker. He couldn’t create any power on his header as it tamely landed in Henderson’s waiting hands.

After an excellent tackle by Burn on Brennan Johnson, Schar played a crossfield pass to Saint-Maximin down the left. Allan cut inside before launching a low effort which Henderson comfortably handled.

Newcastle enter the half without their breakthrough despite having 66% of possession with 14 shots. The cutting edge has been lacking with the bulk of Dean Henderson’s saves being very comfortable. The few times Forest ventured forward, Newcastle defended very well.

Schola @86 DKillers@91 quick to slate Wilson, yet love him when he scores a belter.

    Dominance. Easy win.

Said we would have far too much for them.

Great that we kept up the ability to limit the opposition to so few sights of our goal, like we established second half of last season.

Nice to watch a team with attacking intent and actual method from the first match of a season – it’s been a while.

We’ll that’s a great start to the season, and I put 2 – 0 on my Super 6 prediction so doubly happy! 🙂

Fairly comfortable win to start the season, Bruno MOTM for me, made us tick but ASM also stood out.

Almiron played quite well, end product, decision making is why we need another attacking player though. That extra quality in the final 3rd would make a big difference.

now the question is….Botman didn’t start due to our assumption that it was Burns position to lose but what about Pope…is Dubs truly going to be part of a deal? Was Eddie getting a better look at Pope before making that decision? hmmmm….

You can see why we were so awful in midfield in the past, relying on colback etc. The gulf in class between him and Bruno is absolutely frightening

Well, Villa beaten, Everton will be. I see Dunderland got a 2-3 win vs Bristol City. Tough to win there.

Excellent start – these games can sometimes be hard. Ask Liverpool and villa
Totally dominated – only downside should have had more goals
Much better than the start of last season. We have a gameplan and the players are putting it into practice

Jay B., did I slate him? He was actually a step slow for most of the game. I do not see that as slating, just saying what I’m seeing.

Are you the blog police as per the new COC?

Shurrup just because we called you out on your blog policing earlier.

Wilson would tell you himself he should have been there for those earlier front post crosses.

It’s called having high standards and will have been noted by himself, then he switched on and got across his man and poked home a great finish.

    Very good win.

It is strange watching us dominate a game. Bruno, ridiculously good at keeping the ball. Joe, getting better at keeping the ball. I like Willock who always wants to do something with it.

Miggy is still all over the place tbh. He tries so hard and he gets in the right places. But he doesn’t hurt the opposition when he does. I see progress with him… he is not far off.

    Burn.. our best buy imo

I am so used to us being crap it is hard to get excited…learning though.

We can’t be nothing other than proud of our team and the effort they put in. It doesn’t always come off but they keep going and trying again.

This time last year we were watching a disaster with bruceball. Do we dare to have fun watching football again?
