Newcastle have picked up a win on the first time of asking with a 2-0 win over Nottingham Forest. Two moments of magic in the second half from Fabian Schar and Callum Wilson were enough to seal the three points in a dominant performance.
Eddie Howe made no changes after a scoreless first half. Newcastle continued their hunt for a breakthrough with Forest absorbing pressure well in the opening stages of the second half.
It took 10 minutes for Newcastle to craft their first chance of the half but then came a flurry. Joe Willock had an effort saved by Henderson. Moments later Saint-Maximin went for glory rather than finding Wilson or Almiron at the back post. Allan’s effort was deflected out for a corner.
From that corner, Saint-Maximin received the ball in the box and turned to shoot. His shot was cleared but only to Fabian Schar. The defender drifted forward before blasting the ball into the net from outside the box to make it 1-0. It was reminiscent of his wonder goal against Burnley in his first season on Tyneside.
In the 76th minute, Almiron played a one-two with Guimaraes that freed him into the box. From a tight angle, Miggy tried to guide his shot under Dean Henderson’s legs but the goalkeeper was able to make the save.
Just two minutes later, Newcastle doubled the lead through Callum Wilson. Joelinton was played down the left and crossed the ball into the box. Wilson’s deft touch sent the ball curling over Henderson to make it 2-0.
Howe, who was about to make changes before the goal, brought on Sean Longstaff and Ryan Fraser for Joe Willock and Miguel Almiron. Howe made three further changes in the closing minutes with Wilson, Saint-Maximin, and Guimaraes making way for Chris Wood, Jacob Murphy, and Sven Botman for his debut.
Newcastle saw out the match with little difficulty as Forest were thoroughly outclassed for 90 minutes. It took a while for the quality to shine through but when it did, it was something to behold.

Wilson admitted he was either too near or deep for the crosses he was fed but like a good centre forward he tried tried and tried again

Comment #45Joelinton, Bruno, Maxi and Shar was our best players in my opinion. Trippier, Target and Wilson wasnt at their best, but it was still enough and Wilson had a pure class goal. How amazing this team would be with Paqueta and Diaby. Im still hoping for a nice surprise before the window shuts.

Comment #48If Miggy starts to finish he will cement his place…I would hate to miss the pressure he puts on and the errors he forces…he is starting to link up with Bruno well but still has to do better with the final product. the preseason he had still gives me hope..just wish he put one in today as he had his chances. Still think Sesko is one where we would not lose any speed and covered ground. He will be snatched up soon by someone.

Comment #50Dominant display from start to finish, should have won by more.
Bruno top draw again, along with joelinton.
Found miggy frustrating, needs to use his right peg more instead of cutting back.
Still a good display from him though.
