Eddie Howe Provides Fitness Update And Responds To ‘Done Deal’ Claims

Eddie Howe has given his press conference ahead of tomorrow’s Carabao Cup tie at Tranmere. He has provided an injury update with some positive news on Callum Wilson and Matt Targett, though has confirmed Dan Burn will miss the trip.

Here is what Howe said about the toll of Sunday’s draw against Manchester City and Burn’s situation.

“We’ve got a few bumps and bruises. Dan Burn came off after getting hit in the head so he’ll miss the game.

“Physically we gave so much against Man City so naturally, there are a few tired bodies.”

The plan for tomorrow was likely to heavily rotate the squad against League Two Tranmere. He has gone with practically the same team over the first three matches with the exception of Sven Botman coming in as Matt Targett has been injured.

Howe has confirmed that Targett is very close to being fit and was a late scratch on Sunday. Here is Howe’s update on the left-back.

“Matt is doing well. He was close against Man City but we didn’t want to take that risk when he hadn’t had a big training day in 14 days.

“We felt it was probably too big a risk to start him but he’s very close to being fit.”

The best news could be regarding Callum Wilson. The striker was pulled from Sunday’s match with a tight hamstring. While Callum will undergo a scan, Howe is not too concerned as he provided the following:

“He’s OK. The normal process is he’s gone for a scan and we’re waiting for those results. We hope it’s not too serious.”

Chris Wood will likely get the nod tomorrow but if Wilson is available for Wolves this weekend that would be tremendous news. Callum has started the season in excellent form with two outstanding goals.

Newcastle won’t have any new faces in for tomorrow. Though work is continuing on strengthening the squad with multiple avenues being pursued. A move for Watford’s Joao Pedro is the most advanced after a week of negotiations.

Yesterday, Fabrizio Romano reported a deal was reached with Watford. However, that has been refuted by the local press. Howe has confirmed that a deal is not yet done with The Athletic supplying the following comment:

“I think that is not entirely accurate but I’m not dealing with those things minute to minute or day to day.

“I’m sort of hearing in the background what’s happening, but I don’t think that’s correct.”

It’s going to be a busy week and a half with three matches along with a frantic close to the window. Hopefully, we’ll advance in the cup, pick up some points away, and get two new faces in the door by next Thursday.

How do you know they are not?
It could be all sorted for all we know and the club delaying an announcement.
I would be shocked if Romano was wrong.

Dazzler – “here we go” is different. That’s fine. If I had an offer accepted for a house, I might think “here we go” but I’d know it’s not a “done deal”. When genuinely reputable sources like BBC Sport or SSN say “done deal”, it’s signed (or at least they understand it to be signed).

I can’t trust anyone who uses a term like “done deal” when it’s not done. They’re lying. And there is a quote from Howe where he essentially says it’s a lie too but he’s being a bit more diplomatic…

Not sure what to make of the Wilson scan. Sounds like a regular procedure if its tight. Does not sound like he is going to be out for long

Ledge – because Howe essentially says it in this very article. If it was genuinely done, I’m sure he’d skirt the question or say something like “we’ll have something on that very soon”. It’s not done.

    TDS,

Howe would play coy even if there was “Welcome to the Toon, Pedro” bunting behind him during his presser. He’s notorious for it.

Even if the terms of the transfer was agreed, along with personal terms it’s essentially “done”, but not official until he signs his contract and passes his medical, both of which would be a mere formality.

Even in that example above Howe would play dumb, he never speaks about a player until they are his player.

My guess is the example I gave is where we are with Pedro, or very very near to that stage. I am willing to guess that by the match tomorrow he’s on his way for the medical or already had it.

Ledge – Brighton regarding who? Burn? Saying that it isn’t a “done deal” doesn’t mean that it won’t be a “done deal”. What’s wrong with saying “nearly done” or “close to completion”?

Dazzler – but it’s not done! If it is “done”, why not go and put your entire life savings on it at the bookies? Only you won’t because you know there’s a risk it won’t be done.

It’s done when it’s done. And it doesn’t look like it’s done.

Trying to be funny by calling me an Edwards fanboy is just being immature, and i’d expect more from you.

Im a fanboy of accurate journalism, so if Edwards is wrong, he’s wrong, and if he’s right, he’s right.

He can be a bit of a wet blanket, and Burt, when Ive seen him on the TV, is no great craic either.

But as with Hope, they dispute that the deal is over the line. And they are correct, for now.

Im not sure why you’ve shot down Edwards ( apart from the obvious fact that you hate him) without shooting down the other two, because this isnt done yet as far as we can see, and nobody else is saying its done – Not Sky, BBC etc.

Brighton were correct, they shot his story down because it was incorrect and they wanted to get the full valuation. Then it happened.

    Accuracy 1 ITK’s 0

If not decrying Romano, who Id go to first, like other fans, but he may have shot his bolt here

But instead, you hammer a journalist because u dont like him?

I think the deal will happen, but it might take another day, and maybe another few quid. But as at last night, Burt Hope LE were correct. And they still are as far as we can see. Hopefully it will happen soon though, fine player.

I think that dumbed down is the wrong wording, since it would require that you would be able to read between the lines. To me its just a matter of being able to understand the lingo.

Until that point, it’s guesswork on fans behalf regarding what reports you believe.

Done deal in footy terms means all parties have reached agreement on fee and terms. Just need to then complete the transaction. So sounds like not quite fully agreed, but I’d hope it will be in next day or so, otherwise they’ll move on.
