How Will Newcastle Do Against Crystal Palace On Saturday?

Newcastle are back at it on Saturday as Crystal Palace come to St. James’ Park. The turnaround is quick to help wash away the sour taste rom Wednesday’s heartbreaking defeat at Anfield.

There were positives to take from the evening. One of which was the debut performance of new signing Alexander Isak. The 22-year-old looks tailor-made for Eddie Howe’s rising Magpies.

Isak has captured our poll as the best player against the Reds. He received over 40% on his first outing in a black and white shirt. The entire squad and coaching staff deserve credit for the performance.

After the match, Eddie Howe didn’t dwell on the bitter disappointment or the controversies as another test is on the horizon. The Eagles come to town looking to play spoilers.

Bruno Guimaraes and Allan Saint-Maximin could make their returns after recent hamstring injuries has ruled them out. Allan missed last night while Bruno hasn’t been available for the last two fixtures.

Howe rotated his team at Anfield though some players could be running on fumes after featuring heavily over a congested fortnight. Maybe we’ll see Elliot Anderson get his full Premier League debut.

After three away matches, this one is back home where the crowd will be electric once again. Three points will be the aim to help get us back into the top half of the league table.

Sky have explained the Forest situation quite clearly. They need the players. It’s very simple.

Naptoon – sure, he could just need a change of scenery and that could reignite his career. But how often have you seen that actually happen? Can you think of any examples where a player has gone totally off the boil, changed clubs and then been fantastic after that? Heā€™ll probably end up at Forest and playing in the Championship next seasonā€¦

If Eddie and team can help him buck the trend, Iā€™ll be over the moon. Just think itā€™s unlikely.

Iā€™d take any offer for Wood right now.

He may as well have not come on last night as he contributed nothing again- people who say he ā€œHolds up the ballā€ are just wrong, he doesnā€™t as his touch is never good enough. Wilson is far, far better at holding the ball up and at winning headers!

Doesnā€™t look like weā€™re gonna do anything tonight then. Still think we need a midfielder and in a perfect world a right winger as well (but I donā€™t expect that!).

Never mind, last night was another boost in confidence to play like that missing 3 of our best players and our previous starting CBs! Canā€™t wait to see ASM and Isak together.

When Coutinho went to Villa and started on fire, I was gutted. I thought heā€™d have been amazing here if heā€™s still got that drive but I also accepted that playing for his old captain was a big draw.

Now heā€™s gone off the boil again, Iā€™m definitely not botheredā€¦wonder if heā€™ll regret leaving Liverpool?

You’re spot on about the wage structure Jimiley.
Next season new pay structures needed which will impinge on the cash we have to spend unfortunately. By the way Fair Play Rules dont apply to the former RICH SIX, Chelski , City , Manure, Spurs ,
    Gooners and Scousers

I think this is what Howe means when he is looking for the right characters.

Not ones who perform when they want a new contract.

Aye tbf itā€™s a rarity …..I just think that maybe for free and what I saw last backend heā€™s better than what weā€™ve got in that role which in fact is nowt. As I say Iā€™ve always had a soft spot for him but just my taste how players play the game.

As for transfers go, I hope we are doing what the big boys do.

they barely sign anybody for under 30mil.. thats what gets you a good team these days.

means we have to very patient though. I am not.

mearlam – I agree with you. And thatā€™s why I think the recruitment team will have been working on overdrive to find players who match the quality, personality, budget, and specific style of play to fit in with our squad. Then they have to convince the club and player to sign for us too! I MUCH prefer this way of doing things to the more scattergun approaches weā€™ve seen West Ham and Everton take over the years.

Played golf and had a late lunch with an Everton fan today actually. Heā€™s not too confident about this seasonā€¦

Tbf it’s way past the deadline for us to sign anyone, we usually take at least 3 hrs for medicals, and that wouldn’t even include the time it takes to travel here, even if its within the UK that’s going to be an hr or 2 at least, door to door.

The Athletic do a podcast and this week did a special on the downfall of Deli Ali. Iā€™d recommend it if you have 40 minutes.

Itā€™s very interesting to see how a players career can drop off. Itā€™s much more complex than ā€œhe got paid well so stopped tryingā€ as itā€™s portrayed by a lot of fans and media. Itā€™s something which will apply to a lot of players and it really explains how difficult it can be for that type of player to stay at the top for a long career.

    Gonufc

Iā€™ve got agree on Wood. I really admire his effort but he lacks the pace to press and his style is totally different to that of the team and the identity how has now built. When he came on last night the game changed and Liverpool were able to push up so much more as they knew he didnā€™t offer anything.

Iā€™d only look to keep him if we plan to use him as a sub to come on as part of a two up top, supporting Wilson of Isak. He canā€™t play that role on his own. Just my opinion of course.

Quite right Rotunda how can we pick a team for Palace when three of our best players plus Shelvey and Krafth are injured and the bench is packed with Championship players. We need reinforcements which it looks like we are not going to get this window!

I do like it when certain clubs say they are done for this window and actually mean it. Its playing with us fans a little bit and its not fun.

I know they may be up for it but its a very low chance now.

I think Howe is great on TV but he talks utter shit when it comes to transfers. it tries to play it all dumb.. its not fooling anybody.

he should just say no comment.

Players like Botman and Bruno are more than happy to have signed long term contracts which pay them probably 3 times as much as they were on at their previous clubs.
120k a week is massive for young lads like Botman, who in time might demand more money once he has established himself in 2 or 3 years time, but for now i doubt they will be going anywhere fast, especially if we start winning trophies, which hopefully won`t be too long.

I agree with the Wood coming on last night.

I dont like to criticise managers cos i think they have to just gamble but i thought bringing on Murphy and Wood was a bad idea.. and i think it cost us the game.

Of course, perhaps it didnt but `pool had the run of the midfield once they came on.

I think those two let the performance down. bit annoyed with them.
