The first summer window under our new ownership group has slammed shut. Newcastle didn’t add a fifth signing on deadline day so the tally stands at four new signings for the first team with another four for the academy.
The net summer spend stands at around £112m. It was mission accomplished as Matt Targett, Nick Pope, Sven Botman, and Alexander Isak have added immense quality for Eddie Howe to build with. The club were also able to shift out a lot of excess members of the squad.
Here is a look at this summer’s window sans the youth signings.

Newcastle were in for West Ham’s Harrison Ashby today. David Moyes was unwilling to let the youngster leave as he is their third-choice right-back. The 20-year-old was reportedly keen on the move, which may be revisited in January as he has just one year left on his contract.
Newcastle should be fine until the winter window opens as the World Cup cuts six weeks out of the campaign in November and December. There are just 14 matches until January including the Carabao Cup tie against Crystal Palace in November.
Here are the players who remain with Emil Krafth to be left out of the 25-man squad due to his knee injury. Elliot Anderson does not count against the squad total as he is under 21.
- Goalkeeper – Nick Pope, Karl Darlow, Mark Gillespie
- Center-back – Paul Dummett, Sven Botman, Fabian Schar, Jamaal Lascelles, Dan Burn
- Full-back – Kieran Trippier, Jamal Lewis, Matt Targett, Emil Krafth, Javier Manquillo
- Midfielder – Joelinton, Jonjo Shelvey, Joe Willock, Elliot Anderson, Sean Longstaff, Bruno Guimaraes
- Winger – Allan Saint-Maximin, Ryan Fraser, Jacob Murphy, Miguel Almiron, Matt Ritchie
- Forward – Callum Wilson, Alexander Isak, Chris Wood

I better stop raving about him, if not I’m getting labeled as his boyfriend too. Weirdly as a football fan, we can’t have some favourite players?

Comment #131Must tell you the amazing story of Bamba Dieng last day of the window…
So after 2 months of bargaining, thing finally moved fast.
On the morning, the player was supposed to sign with Lorient. He hopped to have an offer from Nice, he even was in Nice at noon, but nothing solid came, so, he was about to go on to Lorient…
Then, the phone rang… on the line, Leeds united!
Right gentlemen… the english were calling…
Dieng wasn’t really keen to move to England, but the offer was better, by far… and the challenge more exciting.
So he agreed, and Leeds sent a plane to catch him.
As the plane came and was near to catch him, the phone rang… on the ligne, OGC Nice.
Right gentlemen, the french were calling…
Probably cause they heard of Leeds, offer, Nice decided to make a last action hero move, and they sent a negociator to the airport.
The plane was waiting… in vain… at the same moment in the evening, Dieng agreed to Nice offer in the VIP lounge of the airport…
Leeds was probably gutted, but wasn’t the end of story.
Dieng immediatly went to Nice training center in order to undergo the medical…
And he failed it!!!!!!!!
Related to an old knee injury it seem.
So this morning, he’s still a Marseille player…

I hoped I he was wrong because at the time there was no talk of renegotiating and i was worried how that could effect us going forward in this short term but over the moon now that it’s been sorted and it will end after this season. He told me they tried to get out of it before the start of this season but Fun888 held firm.

Pretty much, the world of FFP seems so murky that I doubt anyone who isn’t actually involved in it doesn’t fully understand it and its implications.

You want me to offer evidence from experts whilst you post nonsense?
You’ve just claimed by your own working out we can spend £100m etc etc.
Yet you admitted you’ve never seen any of the contracts or the financial?
How did you work it out then?
Talk out your ass often do you?
Can’t say I’m surprised you’re the first poster I was warned about.
What I posted was no different than you posted except i don’t have a superiority complex.
I’ll happily post a link to the FFP rules, sorry I don’t have time to explain them to you.

Comment #143The point being made about FFP is not about anyone understanding it as I doubt anyone really 100% does but the point being made and I’ve been one to make it, is that it will not hamper us on our way to the top.
Talk of budgets from journos who are just shooting from the hip was nonsense. 50M??? We spent over 100M…
There was no budget and the line that was constantly said and seems the most truthful was that the club and the owners would act if the right player became available which they did and will continue to do so on a deal by deal basis.

Comment #144I saw Ash brought up the non-signing of the 3 P’s last night.
I’ve pondered the predicament and perceived that the person positively pushing the possible priority purchase of potential points providers was proven not privy to the private planning project and was purely a piss-poor prophet.

If that’s true about Ashworth and Howe not able to agree on transfer targets, then I think that’s a very encouraging sign. Means that we never will just buy a player for the sake of it or panic buy anyone. Seems like a thorough process goes into each player to make sure they fit into the squad and has been scouted/approved by the club and then also accepted by the manager as someone he feels can fit into the squad and improve it.
Very encouraging if true and should mean we are far less likely to end up buying a dud.

Comment #146Well, the most funy part about this Dieng story is Nice still want to recruit him… as a Medical Joker!
In France, club got the right to recruit outside of transfer windows one ( and only one per season ) so called “Medical Joker”.
The general idea is to deal with an unlucky suit of injuries during the season.
So they hope further and more elaborated test will reinsure them about Dieng’s Knee and then recruit him under this status.
Wich would be quiet funy for a lad who failed the medical!!!

He was a good servant mate but I clearly hand them wrong idea of the kind of person he was as he seems to have left with a bitter taste in his mouth and it’s not been a good look for him. He might not even get to play for Man U or could feature very little but he has ostracised himself from the NUFC fanbase with his actions so far.
Good luck to him but he means nothing to me anymore

Comment #148It seems like people are arguing the same point about ffp from different angles. Some are saying we are wary of ffp until we can get some sponsorship and the other side saying we don’t have to worry about ffp as we will get sponsorship.

Comment #150Irish Rob, thanks for that post
I always felt that we wouldn’t overspend in this window and I think we would have got Pedro instead of Isak, if Wilson had stayed fit. But an injusry so early, even with his own fitness plan, changed all that.
I think the fact that I said Downie and Edwards were possibly right and that we would get another permanent and 1-2 loanees wasnt far wrong at all.
Mund I think this jarred with your idea that “there is no budget” and “FFP isnt an issue” and you misconstrued what I was saying, thinking I was pointing at a lack of ambition, and it didnt sit well with your idea that the world is our oyster because we have great owners
That wasnt my intention at all. I just thought we would play it fairly safe and what I’m saying ties up with the owners pronouncements.

Comment #151I think the only thing about FFP which seems obvious to me, is that the club were concerned about it to some extent, which is shown by them bringing in Darren Eales and looking to bring in a Commercial Partnership Manager. Clearly trying to path out a way to maximise as much income commercially as we can to allow us more spending power down the line.
Nobody truly knows how much of an impact FFP had on our transfer window or will have on windows coming up. So it’s a pointless exercise if you ask me trying to dissect it and prove your personal view on it.

Comment #153The most worrying aspect of FFP is the new 70% rule UEFA want to bring in.
It won’t benefit the clubs or football itself.
In my mind it’s for the owners to take money out.
I can’t see how it benefits the game at all.

Comment #155Thatss not quite correct Mund. A few weeks ago Downie was on U tube saying he reckoned we would spend 35M or a bit more on one more player, and then maybe get a loanee or two. I think Pedro would have been that 35Mill but we decided we needed Isak. The info he was giving was correct at the time. We had tried Isak earlier and we were put off by the price. But Wilson spooked us.
If FFP wasnt an issue, or wasnt a concern, then I think we would have spend a good bit more than we did , on top of Isak. because we still need players, and the league is there to be attacked.
We didnt take that route, but I think we will get 2-3 top class players per window from now on , and FFP will be less concern at that point due to Eales and Co

Bringing those people in was about growing the club and having professionals in place where they werent before, it was not worrying about the clubs FFP.
The owners will already have the sponsorship deals in place
I also disagree on not being able to work out how much FFP has affected this window!
It hasn’t, we had no debt.
Not hard to work out.

Comment #159Sarge, Maguire and Swiss Ramble take different appraoched to FFP. Swiss Ramble was more conservative. It said we could spend lots, but essentially it might be risky to do that as it mightt hamper us. I think this is what the owners felt too. They have essentially told us that, and said it beforehand too.
I think they are right, although Id like to have seen one one or two more incomings to clear out Murphy etc
But overall its brilliant.

Comment #160I for one don’t think there was or is a set budget per se. They will spend what is needed on the correct player where necessary. I think they saw Etikite and Isak as similar players but Etikite was half the price. We couldn’t get him so upped the spending. FFP is very much an issue, as Adamn_92 has just pointed out, this is where Darren Eales will earn his corn.
