Eddie Howe has given his press conference for tomorrow’s match against Crystal Palace. The lads return home after three away matches. The looming question is the fitness of the squad’s stars Callum Wilson, Bruno Guimaraes, and Allan Saint-Maximin.
While Callum is still out, both Guimaraes and Saint-Maximin are close to returning. This is what Howe said per the club’s Twitter account:
“Bruno and Maxi are close. They weren’t serious injuries but we’ll wait and see whether they’re available for this weekend.”
Bruno has missed the last two while Allan was out for the heartbreaking defeat at Liverpool on Wednesday. New signing Alexander Isak Came into the team to make a memorable debut with a class finish.
Howe has been very pleased with the 22-year-old, who was unveiled just one week ago. Howe has given the following update on Isak’s first week:
“The players have taken to him. He’s quite quiet and he’s going about his business in a professional way – he’s very focused.
“He’s asking questions about how we want to play and what’s required of him – he’s been excellent.
“I think that showed in his performance on Wednesday. It was one of really good tactical understanding in a very short time he delivered what we wanted him to do.
“He showed his ability and the second goal that wasn’t given especially was incredible.”
Isak was our fourth and final signing of the summer window. The four additions have already had their impact on the club. Newcastle were able to move out enough players so that nobody will be left behind unregistered.
Here is Howe’s assessment of the window:
“A very good window for us, I think. From my side, I had a clear vision of what I wanted it to be and it’s never perfect but from the board down everyone’s given their all to create the best squad possible.
“I found the window to be very difficult this year – it was very long. I’m pleased it’s shut and we can concentrate on the football. I’m very pleased with the squad that’s there.”

Rafa done it to Gouffran,.said it would have been better to keep him but also said that sometimes you have to take in to account what is best for the player and they allowed him to go off and get a three year deal elsewhere while he could.

Comment #43onmeedsun – agreed. Major decision in the game but very little talking about it. It’s weird. I really wish there would be a statement put out after a game to explain key decisions. It won’t stop everyone from complaining but it would help reasonable people to understand why certain decisions were reached.
I’ve read about the shoulder but it would be nice if that was the official line and included a picture showing it and a link to the rule that was applied.

A copy of the VAR review from ESPN analysis.
Goal disallowed: Isak offside
What happened: Alexander Isak burst through to put Newcastle United 2-0 up at Liverpool in the 54th minute but the flag went up for offside (watch here.)
VAR decision: Decision upheld.
VAR review: As with all the other such VAR decisions this season, the process remains simple. If the lines for the attacker and defender touch, onside will be given.
There is a clear gap between the lines, and it’s not as close as other recent decisions such as Chelsea’s Kai Havertz against Leicester City and Arsenal’s Gabriel Jesus against AFC Bournemouth.
If this image were to show Isak was onside, the striker’s knee would be in advance of the vertical line. The VAR cannot go against the technology, which is mapped to each pitch individually.
Great goal but unfortunately didn’t count in the end.

It’s the Great North Run 21K from Newcastle to South Shields. Started as a charity event in the early eighties but is now a recognised World athletics event.

Comment #48The worst decision in the Liverpool game was in the first few minutes.
Diaz on Lascelles, leg breaking challenge with studs showing.
Late and dangerous yet the commentator said it was fair because they both had raised legs.
If it was other way round Lascelles would’ve seen red.
Terrible tackle and a even worse decision from referee.

I think it might come to soon for the pair mate and definitely for Bruno as Howe spoke about him missing the next couple of games. I’d love it if he turned up on the team sheet as like you say we need a great response after leaving Anfield in the way we did but more importantly we left with our heads held high.
Without either of them I still think we will go and get a result as we need that bounce back and Eddie will know how important that is. We just need to keep doing what we are doing and we will have a great season.

Comment #51On the TDS vs TDSarf conversation. The whole reason I’ve always called TDSarf as such is to not be confused with Toon Down South who I call TDS. The latter has been about for as long as the blog has existed and is a canny lad. There is also a tads, toon army down south who unfortunately doesn’t post anymore.

Comment #52Talking about the time wasting and I didn’t click on a first and then got reminded of it yesterday….
When Henderson came off he took 1 minute and 30 seconds or there or thereabouts.
How the foot can they complain about time wasting when he wasted that length of time coming off the pitch?
I don’t really like scousers before that game but I seriously don’t like the footers now.
I just keep reminding myself that it’s Newcastle United vs the World

Comment #54Ronway – good spot. I Googled it but couldn’t find that one. The first page was Toon blog and forums with fans moaning about it being onside plus one semi-credible site claiming it was his shoulder.
Wonder if that puts it to bed? Was offside…move on.

21 Km runing??? Hell… What about cars?
0K, i see… the energy crisis, the price of oil… so you got to run. Hopefully, in France, it doesn’t struck so hard, so we don’t have to run to go everywhere, but sure, after a couple of month at this regime, at least, i guess you will all be very fit.

Comment #58If technology is used for decisions on offside or not then can someone explain to me how it’s so inconsistent….?
If that is the case and it’s a machine deciding these decisions then that’s a bit of a joke tbh as it’s clearly not working with the inconsistent decisions year after year.
VAR was brought into to help be more consistent but each season we see how inconsistent the system is.
If I could choose now I’d rather go back to how it was as I always figured it’s a human error not machine error

Comment #63The Last Jedi – that article I posted the link to above addresses that incident. Compares it to the Longstaff incident. So perhaps either VAR gives them both as penalties or neither. Personally, I’d rather see shirt tugs penalised but I don’t make the rules…

Comment #71The problem with so called “experts” is they can be bought or as bais as anyone else.
See Rishi Sunaks comments on the “experts” opinions regarding lockdowns.
Anyone with any sense does their own research and forms their own opinion.
Einstein was a patern clerk not a physics expert when he came up with his first works.
Then when asked what it was like to be the most intelligent man in the world he replied “I don’t know you’d have to ask Nikola Tesler”
Not many people refer to them as experts as they see the arrogance in the statement, that claim is usually made by others.

Comment #74Loved this from Eddie this morning on whether outside attitudes towards the club have brought everyone together:

Comment #78Torygraph on the transfer window:-
Newcastle United: 7/10
Key arrival
Alexander Isak. The Sweden international was Newcastle’s first choice striker back in the spring but they thought he would be far too expensive after initial approach in July. That changed late in the window and the Magpies might just have signed a star of the future. Still only 22, he enjoyed a fantastic debut against Liverpool
One that got away
Jack Harrison. This went a little under the radar, but Newcastle made two bids for the Leeds winger this summer. They are likely to return with another in January. Hugo Ekitike, who joined PSG and Youri Tielemans are two other prominent names missed out on.
How satisfied will they be?
In an ideal world, Eddie Howe would have got another winger and a central midfielder but to get their first choice defender (Botman) and striker (Isak) makes it a successful window.
