Howe Provides Injury Update And Gives Assessment Of The Summer Window

Eddie Howe has given his press conference for tomorrow’s match against Crystal Palace. The lads return home after three away matches. The looming question is the fitness of the squad’s stars Callum Wilson, Bruno Guimaraes, and Allan Saint-Maximin.

While Callum is still out, both Guimaraes and Saint-Maximin are close to returning. This is what Howe said per the club’s Twitter account:

“Bruno and Maxi are close. They weren’t serious injuries but we’ll wait and see whether they’re available for this weekend.”

Bruno has missed the last two while Allan was out for the heartbreaking defeat at Liverpool on Wednesday. New signing Alexander Isak Came into the team to make a memorable debut with a class finish.

Howe has been very pleased with the 22-year-old, who was unveiled just one week ago. Howe has given the following update on Isak’s first week:

“The players have taken to him. He’s quite quiet and he’s going about his business in a professional way – he’s very focused.

“He’s asking questions about how we want to play and what’s required of him – he’s been excellent.

“I think that showed in his performance on Wednesday. It was one of really good tactical understanding in a very short time he delivered what we wanted him to do.

“He showed his ability and the second goal that wasn’t given especially was incredible.”

Isak was our fourth and final signing of the summer window. The four additions have already had their impact on the club. Newcastle were able to move out enough players so that nobody will be left behind unregistered.

Here is Howe’s assessment of the window:

“A very good window for us, I think. From my side, I had a clear vision of what I wanted it to be and it’s never perfect but from the board down everyone’s given their all to create the best squad possible.

“I found the window to be very difficult this year – it was very long. I’m pleased it’s shut and we can concentrate on the football. I’m very pleased with the squad that’s there.”

They should revise the rule to foot only. Imagine long jump, the jumper get penalised for their hand crossing the line when they jump…..

Raj – new manager bounce doesn’t always happen but yeah, I think it was only a few games when Coutinho also seemed like an excellent signing. Just checked and looks like he won 4 out of his first 6 games, with the 2 losses being against Liverpool and Man City, so that was a very good start. Been very patchy since then and should be top half with the squad they have.

The problem for Gerrard is the brains of the operation Beale have left and he doesn’t seem to be able to think for himself

Rangers fans were gutted he went as it was pretty much accepted that he was the main man behind the scenes

QPR have started well under him so it’s clear he does have something about him could be the next Potter, Cooper or Howe

VAR is still new(ish) they are adjusting and mistakes will be made.. Personally, I would go back to no tech and let the 3 officiating officiate.

So if LE isn’t misquoting Howe about domestic clubs helping us out with loans, then why have we allowed Dubs to go to Man U. Doesn’t make sense.

Tyran21 – I think the rule is right but I wouldn’t mind if it was based on feet only either. As long as it’s consistent, I’m happy with it. Offside is offside and I expect VAR to rule out a “goal” against us for a few mm at some point this season too.

Jail, ref Dubs, get rid of someone who is not happy, £2m loan fee with £6M buy on (never going to happen) and wages off the book. Plus, as another poster mentioned, he has only managed 1/2 of games in last 2 seasons.

    Welcome back lads

On the chat of the loans I mentioned that didn’t think any team would loan to us from the big 6 and it was correct sadly

We will be seen as a threat so no chance of Gallagher or Pulisic being here

We just need to now get ahead of the game for young players get your Seskos etc before anyone else is thinking about it

Still gutted we didn’t get Harrison or Maddison reckon either of them with what we had would really kick us on as the both add goals and creativity from midfield

Although if Leicester aren’t doing well we will probably get him cheaper in January

I think the VAR technology will evolve over time and become, hopefully, better!

I really don’t understand the comment regarding the striker’s knee.

” If this image were to show Isak was onside, the
striker’s knee would be in advance of the vertical line. ”

The explanation regarding the VAR lines having a gap or converging seemed reasonable enough but the last bit seems to then confuse the issue.

Unfortunately one that got away, only time will tell if the system improves.

    🙂

Of course the Top 6 are scared. If we keep our first team injury free we will finish in those positions. But we will have injuries, and thats where we will drop points.

I think its good we are giving the current crop a go this year and making slow and steady additions. Its essential for team morale and bonding.

Also, Im glad Jamal Lewis is in the squad. He deserves his chance under Howe.

During the international tournaments VAR was used well and shown how good it could be but for some reason after years of it being used in the PL they are still no further forward…

So is it more of a human error…? Or machine error…?

I still think it’s down to human error

After watching that game again I wonder if Howe would think he should have brought another CB on for Longstaff or Willock who were dead on their feet?

Feel like that’s the kind of thing Jose or Simeone would do provide an extra layer in the middle to protect it last 5 mins something to ponder but if Botman is there for that corner does Carvalho score

On doing right by the player, particularly Dubs, I think you raise a great point.

The Southampton chief exec was on a podcast recently talking about selling players. He said you sell a vision for them to get them. Younger players who will go on to be top players will come in on the basis they get a couple years PL experience to show what they can do and Southampton get two good years then a nice big fee when they move. As soon as you stop selling or make it difficult, the next young prospect has no interest in going to you.

As much as I hope we move past their level, the same still applies. Haaland wanted Madrid by all accounts but they couldn’t afford him now and were linked with Mbappe. He signed for City knowing he’ll probably only give them 5 years then move on.

If we want to keep bringing the Bruno’s of the world into the club, they need to know we are honourable in our business.

I did expect that we’d have brought on Botman for the last 10 minutes, just shut up shop.

I’d have preferred him on for Wood, then just left Almiron up top to run in behind as they kept pressing. Would have at least forced them to think about over committing where they didn’t need to do that with Wood.

Easy to say in hindsight and who’s to say it would even work. Howe knows far more than me, so need to trust him. I just thought he’d had done it differently.

I have no issue with Dubs going out on loan if he was unhappy losing his spot and to keep squad harmony.

My question is why it was to Manure.

I don’t believe for a second that no other team would be willing to have Dubravka on loan. Surely a relatively decent European team would have welcomed a keeper like Dubs? So i’m just unsure why we decided to do business with Manure if it’s true that we felt clubs in the league were unwilling to do business with us. Especially Manure after the way they treated us when we tried to do business with them previously.

Even if we weren’t looking to ship Dubs on, as soon as an offer came from Manure and he expressed a desire to leave, we could surely have sounded out other clubs outside the league that he could have joined.

I don’t know, maybe Dubs really just wanted to move to Manure for some reason or wanted to stay in the prem. Just still think it’s a really weird move.

Yeah I guess we shall never know but it’s certainly something to think about in other games if we are under the cosh have seen it done many times over the years against us when a team brings on a defender to snuff out a comeback

Would help if we had a bit of midfield depth to call on mind you

Wood was terrible don’t think he won a single challenge same with Murphy pulling out of 50/50 challenges that’s the minimum expected

Seems a weird move for everyone I think.

From our perspective, why do business with a club who made it so hard to get lingaard on January. Maybe building bridges.

From Dubs view. Surely a few cup and European games aren’t preferable to being a regular somewhere else.

From Man Utd view, he won’t replace De Gea. Everything De Gea isn’t great at (commanding his area/coming for crosses and distribution), he’s also not good at. So don’t really see him suiting Ten Haag.

I wish him well, but the whole thing doesn’t make any sense to me.

He bear hugged him, picked him up and threw him to the floor.

I’ve never seen anything like it before, seen loads wrestling or pushing, Mings actually picked him up.

I laughed in amazement when I saw it, ridiculous is a tiny bit of a understatement.

    Couple of things.
Welcome back Mund, Welcome back Jail, good luck on the GNR.

On VAR, the question for me is, is it better than what we used to have with referees making the decision without it.

On FFP, or as I like to call it, Fantasy Financial Pantomime, don’t care, let the club do what they do, I’m sure someone at the club knows how it works.

The only thing I care about right now is this weekends game, windows over, Liverpool game over, let’s focus on kicking Palaces Ass and upsetting Zaha.

VAR brings in fine details which somehow complicated things. If they just judge by the furthest feet line, it’s 100% consistent as its there for all to see. VAR brings in other body parts, which alot of the time is not considered in the ruling of other sports. As I mentioned long jump, but let’s look closer to a sport similar to offside situation. I think sprinting only requires your fingers on the starting line but they don’t care your shoulder or head is across the line I think(correct me if I’m wrong)

Doubt it’d ever happen but makes perfect sense to me. Can see exactly when the ref has paused the watch and as soon as it hits the added time amount, wherever the ball is and whatever is happening, times up. Game ends. Eliminates any air of doubt and controversy about when the game should be stopped, was too much time added on etc etc

Would be the fairest and best way to eliminate any controversy.

That or get rid of added time altogether. Just have the ref pause the watch when play has stopped for any reason. Then continue when play resumes. That way you can just end the first half bang on 45 and end the match bang on 90 as you’ve already technically played the added time. Again, eliminates any air of uncertainty about whether the referee should have ended play sooner.
