Here is Eddie Howe’s press conference he gave earlier today for our home game against Crystal Palace on Saturday afternoon.
After taking only 3 points from the last 4 games, it’s important that we get back to our winning ways and keep close to the top six positions in the Premier League.
Howe also talks about the just completed summer transfer window and thinks that getting Matt Targett, Nick Pope, Sven Botman and Alexander Isak signed for under £120M is good business for Newcastle.

Comment #1Adam – but it is consistent in terms of offside being related to any part of the body that can play the ball, which includes the shoulder. The only thing that isn’t consistent is fans’ interpretations of the rules as most of them don’t understand them. So…if making it feet only makes it easier for fans to understand, then I’d be all for it. Again, I say set up a petition and I’ll sign it.

Comment #3jimiley – Fernandez goes because he’d be 5th choice, at best, for centre back. Ritchie stays because he’s versatile and is therefore an option at winger or full back if required.

Comment #4How can you argue that it’s consistent when 99% of fans, pundits, ex players all say it isn’t….?
It’s not consistent and that’s the problem.
I do think some just like to argue the opposite view just for the fun of it

Comment #5The problem with VAR is that there’s a human interpreting it so prone to making mistakes – sooner they cut out the human element the better it will be

Comment #6I don’t get it. There is literally proof that the rules were followed correctly for the Isak decision and people are still talking about human error. The proof is there, the decision was correct based on the rules.

Petition isn’t a bad idea though I do doubt i could get anywhere near enough traction on it to have any notice, or that they’d pay attention anyway. But when I have some time I may look to set one up.
That’s the inconsistent bit though that you just mentioned, the ‘any part of the body that can play the ball, which includes the shoulder’. That adds a completely unnecessary complicated element into the decision making. You have to judge exactly which part of the arm/shoulder you’re measuring from, a players body position could make it difficult to judge that accurately, then you have to be confident the images can correctly judge which part of the arm it is that’s actually over the line etc.
Why have all that faffing about which could lead to inconsistencies. If it’s just going by the positioning of players feet, it makes it far simpler and eliminates those issues by a large percentage.
Anyway, i’ve gone on about VAR and offside too much now haha good discussion though. I better actually get on with some work.

Comment #8VAR is there to create controversy, it gets people talking about the games and adds eyes to the sport. Extra eyes mean more subscriptions to Sky etc and more money to the league in television rights. If VAR was consistent there’d be nowt to talk about the game barring the score and if there’s any goals, who scored them.

Comment #10Take our game against Wolves, without the Schar incident and the foul on Fraser to disallow their goal all you would be talking about is St Max’s stunning equaliser late on.

Comment #11Adam – the refs literally have diagrams showing where the playable part of the body ends and the non-playable part of the body begins. They’d need the same even if it was feet or feet+legs anyway. When it comes down to find margins, you might get unusual situations like where a player is facing away from goal and their ankle is offside but their foot is not. Or maybe the hip is offside but the leg is not. There’s always going to borderline situations.
Create the petition and then just post it on social media, tagging Premier League etc. Also put it on as many forums as you can find. If it’s well written and you push it enough via the right channels, it should go viral and get some attention.

Comment #13VAR has removed so many inconsistencies and so many really bad decisions. I don’t know why some can’t see that. It’s not perfect but have people forgotten the penalties given for diving? The goals not given despite the ball clearly crossing the line? Red cards being missed despite serious foul play? The red card and ban would sometimes be issued AFTER the game, which didn’t benefit the team that the foul was committed against one bit!
Some people have short memories.

I’ve watched the first two episodes and I think I’ll start to follow Wrexhams results.
It’s really good, nothing like any other football documentary I’ve watched.

Comment #15And as Mund just said the Longstaff penalty decision. Then Wednesdays game you have the offside which has been discussed endlessly since. Sky Sports build it up as well by saying at the end of a game “we’ll be looking at the controversial decisions after the break to see what our pundits views are” . Then you have Ref Watch on for over half an hour every Monday morning going over all the controversial decisions from the weekend.

Comment #16Not to mention John stones punching the ball away – I really don’t understand how that was not reviewed it’s and all clear as day pretty much like the season before when Fraser is taken out by Edison – it seems it’s still subjective and there is no consistency apart from too the top sides so in reality nothing much has changed the big decisions go in favour of the so called bigger clubs

Comment #26ZG – The place has been pretty lively but also respectful for the last couple of weeks I feel. As long as it stays that way, I’ll be happy, regardless of whether I agree with the comments or style.
Was good to see ToonDownSouth again recently too. I feel there have been quite a few absent posters reappear recently as well as a few new ones. Maybe some of those are new accounts from long gone posters too…

Comment #29Plenty of VAR posts today but there is bugger all we can do about Isak`s disallowed goal, it is now history.
I am more concerned about tomorrows game and picking up 3 points, something which we haven`t done since the opening game of the season.
I`m really hoping Bruno is fit, he makes the difference, like i said previously, if he had been on the field against the dippers we would have won.
I`m on edge when SL plays, he is always vulnerable to getting caught in possession, too slow reacting to opposing players around him.
I think Palace will score so im going 2-1 Toon.

Comment #32Einstein was definitely a physics expert. While he dropped out school, he then went back and got a doctorate in physics and must have gone to a top Uni as he was taught by a famous physicist, Minkowski, who said Einstein wasn’t bright or something along those lines. Going to university wasn’t as easy as it is today and degrees meant a lot more then so he didn’t get it by merely passing the attendance as is almost the case nowadays.

We are better than Palace but i think a few are underestimating them a tad.
Toon at full strength would win this game no problem, hopefully Bruno and St Max are fit.
We have a gem in Isak and will tip him to hit the onion bag , it`s just our CM is a worry without Bruno in there.

Comment #34WLToon – plenty of people are wearing black & white tinted glasses. They believe we have a chance against Man City & Liverpool but should comfortably beat the likes of Palace and Wolves. Reality is that anyone can beat anyone in this league. Palace have a good squad and deserve respect but I’d still say we’re favourites. Yeah, really hoping that Bruno is in the middle for us and ASM and Isak are fit too. Wilson would be a bonus!

Comment #35Gerrard to be the first manager sacked this season, especially after getting a good tonking from Citeh this weekend.
Him and Lampard might be the media darlings but they are pap at coaching a team at the highest level.
A double bullet dodged there me thinks.

Comment #36WLtoon underestimate Palace at our peril, they’ve started the s3ason on fire and it will be a tough tough game. I think we will come out winners by the odd goal. But Viara has them playing so well and fair play to him as they play in the right way too. If we keep Zaha quiet we definitely will win. Trippier and Shar need to double up on him.

Comment #37Right from before implementation, the fa/pl clearly put out thru the media that they were gonna apply it ‘their own way’.
That is a clear statement that they were leaving loop holes…why? Who for?
They are slowly climbing down, but still arent ‘onside’ with every other league/comp.
Therefore, while, whoever they did that for, gains…all english teams and the england team lose out when playing abroad, as they are used to slightly different applications.
It serves no one but ‘who it was meant to’, whomever that might be…i wonder who?
