Newcastle have soldiered on without three of their stars over the past few weeks. Callum Wilson, Bruno Guimaraes, and Allan Saint-Maximin have been out of action with hamstring injuries, all reported to be minor.
Guimaraes and Saint-Maximin should be nearing a return. Eddie Howe revealed the pair faced late fitness tests for the Crystal Palace match on Saturday. Both ultimately were kept out of the squad in the 0-0 draw.
Callum Wilson’s situation is more precarious. The striker injured his hamstring in the 3-3 draw against Manchester City over two weeks ago. His layoff was reported to be a couple of weeks but he doesn’t appear to be closing in on a return at West Ham on Sunday.
The addition of Alexander Isak has softened the blow from Callum’s absence. The 22-year-old has played very well in his two starts, which included a brilliant goal on his debut at Liverpool.
Sean Longstaff has played well in Bruno’s absence while Ryan Fraser has gotten the call on the left for Saint-Maximin. Fraser has not been able to replicate the impact of his enigmatic teammate.
If Allan cannot go on Sunday, an option Howe could entertain is handing Elliot Anderson his full Premier League debut. Anderson came in for Fraser on Saturday and had an immediate impact. In 20 minutes, he had 23 touches compared to Fraser’s 28 in 70 minutes.
After the match, Howe spoke about Elliot’s cameo on the left. Here is what the head coach said as published in The Northern Echo
“I thought he was very bright. I brought him on on the left – I thought our midfield three were doing well at that moment in the game, I didn’t want to disrupt their rhythm. I thought we had control of the game.
“Sometimes, if you make a change to an area that’s functioning well, you have a negative effect, so we put him wide. It’s an area that he can play and play very well, and certainly his chopping and turning in the box was very impressive.
“He put a couple of lovely balls in with his left foot, which we probably should have done better with, so I’m very pleased with Elliot. Again, he comes on, home game, pressure on him, and he wants the ball in every moment, and that’s a big positive to take.”
The hope is both Allan and Bruno are ready to start at West Ham. We should find out more as the week progresses. If Allan can’t start, Anderson deserves a chance to show what he can do in a full Premier League debut.

Comment #3The kid is a talent for sure, I am glad we didn’t farm him off to the championship and it appears that Howe is blooding him in gradually (similar to Bruno), with 10 minutes at Wolves and 25 minutes vs Palace.
I can see him replacing Willock by the end of the season.

Comment #6I watch videos on a YouTube channel called Under the cosch. They interview ex footballers, managers etc, it’s a bit like the after dinner talks the ex pros do.
Steve Howey was excellent, great insight into the KK days, Matt Le Tissier and Mark Crossley were also excellent.
Very funny, loads of stories about ex players and really interesting bits of insight.
I though I’d post this one as it’s a ex referee, he talks about the bribes when he was officiating and other ways of cheating.

Worth the watch when you have time, as are their other videos.
Every fan should watch the Steve Howey one when the have time, brilliant!

Comment #7I agree with this article, Anderson really does deserve to start. We have not seen the best of this lad yet. The great thing is he has a great manager, coaching team and top pro players like Bruno trippier to learn from and become the best.at least he was never bruced, some could get that scarred would never recover from such terrible treatment. ThinK EH is going to ease the lad in, but I really believe we will see him have a breakthrough season this season. Once he gets that confidence and experience up then EH can really mould him into something special. Anderson reminds me of a very young Ross Barclay before he was mismanaged and was allowed to go off the boil. Young Ando won’t be like that and Eddie wouldn’t allow it.
Start him against the Hammers.

Comment #9Think Andersen will definitely get his chance this season, he’ll either force his way into the team with impressive sub appearances (he’s going to score off the bench soon you can just feel it) or an injury or 2 will give him an opening. Probably too early into the season just yet but nobody would complain or say he doesn’t deserve it when he does get a start.

Comment #13Afternoon folks. Hope everyone is well. Bored of discussing VAR, just hoping they do something about it after those two ridiculous decisions at the weekend. Lee Mason should be fearing for his job after that shocker.
Definitely not had the breaks so far in the Premier League but it’s still a decent start. Really looking forward to seeing Isak link up with Bruno and ASM, plus having the option of Wilson starting for a bit or coming on from the bench. Lots of goals there.

I’ve just seen your posts at the end of the previous thread, so yet again you’re jumping to conclusions. With your terrible detective work, You are certainly no Shelock Holmes, poirot, inspector morse, Bergerac etc. etc. You however could be Vera no fook that she is a Geordie, you are Miss Marple. Yes that is Miss Marple the night crawling detective haha :lol,
OK so you think I am someone else this fenham guy who once upon a time in a land called fenham posted here and because of the following: I made a statement to Jail earlier that I worked offshore? Eh check back silly, I didn’t say offshore at all I said been away from my family. Could have been working, could have been in jail whatever it was it is fook all to do with you Miss Marple. OK your second wild theory, I have an Irish mother? Haha do you know what which will actually blow your mind here, I am actually from and live in fenham too, and guess what, there is a huge Irish contingent that live here, so what the hell does that prove? I’ve not posted here long at all and you’ve pretty much made me your target, so I strongly advise you to back off. And I will leave you well alone in your jesus sandals and just under the knee socks 😉
So pleease Stop your mischief aking you’re just an agitator that brings nothing of note or interesting football chat to this blog apart from wild theories, to target good football folk, and your absolute love of your life far left politics. You will get yhe odd one who worship you like the condescending self righteous brothers boy band.
I’ve read this great blog a long time and I’ve seen your posts and who you have gone after. But enough Lesh be gone with you and target someone else from fenham, who has an Irish mother, who was away from home for a period of time. Silly man. I will not engage with you again you are not worth my time. I will ignore you, but please DO NOT keep making up wild theories and throwing accusations about regarding me being someone else. Now you just Behave yourself!!!!!

Comment #23Scorer1971 – to be fair mate, multiple people have independently come up with the thought that you are Fenham. I understand that if you’re not Fenham, then you’re not too happy about people thinking you’re him but I also understand that if you are Fenham, and perhaps Fenham was actually banned, then you wouldn’t admit you are on here…
A few reasons people think you’re Fenham:
– very similar writing style
– turned up on the blog in a 24 period along with Mund’s return and Sarge (who I believe is OP)
– fitted in with the blog very comfortably and quickly, like you’ve been here for a long time
– very quickly matey with Mund (Fenham and Mund are friends)
– made a beeline and started some arguments with exactly the same people that Fenham did
Now, I always thought Fenham was alright. I thought he was loyal to the point of defending the indefensible but at least he was consistent.

Comment #24It’s a bit unfair to look at the form table, given how many points have been stolen from us. Like 32 points 😉
But, if we do, we’ve got 4 points out of a possible 15. Draws look and feel nice but they’re abysmal in terms of point haul.
Not worried as we play proper football these days. Remember when we’d get like a chance a game? And when we’d be happy to only lose 2-1 because of that goal difference thing? I do.
Still, let’s get us some wins Eddie. And do a bit of a klopp (I know you’re too much of a gent) when those idiots steal points off us.

Comment #25Munster Mag, barclay and Anderson have a lot of similarities the way they play, their build, movement, skills but it stops there as Ross B had a bad attitude by the looks of it, Anderson has a great attitude, much better mentality and will be a top professional. RB could have been something very special, but for me the day he went down the smoke it was game over.
EH will look after Anderson keep his feet firmly on the ground, and get the very best out of him. I’m excited for the young lads future and a whitley bay lad. Hopefully the best thing to come out of NUFC since Gazza.he really does have the world at his feet.

Comment #27Going back to VAR for a minute…apparently it’s 3 to 1 in our favour in terms of VAR reversing an on-field decision. https://www.espn.co.uk/football/english-premier-league/story/4722849/how-var-decisions-have-affected-every-premier-league-club-in-2022-23
I was wondering why Isak’s second “goal” against Liverpool wasn’t included so I looked it up. The assistant referee flagged for offside so VAR was looked at to see if the decision was wrong. VAR was just used to confirm the on-field decision.

the BBC articles about the VAR incidents have already gone from their front football page as far as i can see. i suspect the BBC were fabricating the articles as they didn’t name any source and are now keen to switch focus.

Comment #31GUARDIAN – New puzzle for upwardly mobile Newcastle
This year has been almost relentlessly positive for Newcastle. Now for the step up. Ahead of Saturday’s visit of Crystal Palace, Eddie Howe’s apparent attempt to foster a bunker mentality for extra stimulus was understandable. After a couple of tough matches on the road, ending with their late disappointment at Liverpool, Palace’s visit heralded a run of fixtures that in their current flush of optimism, Newcastle might be mainly expected to win – a newish position for them. Whether they are yet quite accomplished enough to justify that expectation – especially in the absence of Bruno Guimarães, Allan Saint-Maximin and Callum Wilson – is another question. While Howe had every right to be pleased with Saturday’s determined performance (and was), the inability to finish off a Palace team that were hanging on by their fingernails at times suggested Patrick Vieira’s post-match forecast that Newcastle could make Europe may be slightly premature.

If Anderson is that key then we should try him. Trouble is he is niether a central midfielder or a left winger, so a very difficult lock to pick.

Comment #32TfB – thing is, I think virtually all of those players are past their best, maybe all of them. If they still have some drive then maybe they can play to 75% of their best but I suspect most of them are on the slippery slide down…will have to see how many of them have the bottle to keep fighting until they’re done.

Comment #36Cannot see us benefitting anything at all from the botched VAR decisions.
Plus cannot see anything changing in the short term. VAR is ok it is just those operating it who are the main problems.
Thing I hate is when somebody blasts the ball a couple of feet away from an oppostion player, who looks away/has his back turned and they give a handball decision – just not right.
Load of knobbers trying to improve the game but the opposite is happening.

Comment #39Mister Tuff – the rule is SUPPOSED to be based on the arm being in an unnatural position. So, regardless of whether the defender has his back turned, if his arm is stretched out then it’s deemed to be in an unnatural position and it should be handball. But if it’s down by his side, that should never be a handball.
I think they should also extend the rule to making it not a handball if the ball would have hit another part of the player’s body too. So if they put their hand in front of their face to protect themselves or it hits an arm when it would have hit their chest instead, I’d like that to not be handball.
ToonDarnSarf
Sep 5, 2022 at 5:39 PM
Comment #40TfB – I didn’t know that had Favre too. Yeah, we were definitely linked to him taking over from Bruce.
Schmeichel should be quality still as he probably has his Dad’s grit. His Dad did alright at Villa and Man City after he left the big time with Man Utd anyway. I’m less convinced by some of the others…though injuries are playing a part in the likes of Ramsey’s descent into retirement I suspect.
