Newcastle had a productive summer with 8 signings, including 4 academy prospects. The club tried to further strengthen on deadline day but numerous targets proved beyond reach, with Eddie Howe revealing Premier League clubs were reluctant to do business with the resurgent Magpies.
January may prove just as challenging though Newcastle are expected to be active once again. The Scottish Sun is reporting that Rangers youngster Cole McKinnon could be targetted in the next window.
Newcastle have been scouting the young midfielder, who is currently on loan at Patrick Thistle. They like what they see as the 19-year-old has performed very well in the Scottish Championship with 2 goals and 1 assist in 6 appearances.
Rangers will want to keep hold of their prized midfielder, who has three years remaining on his contract. McKinnon was handed his debut last May coming off the bench in a 3-1 win at Hearts. The teenager took little time to open his account scoring a goal in the 81st minute.
The Scotland U19 international would be one for the future if he is poached in January or next summer. The club is focused on adding young talent. A deadline-day move for West Ham’s Harrison Ashby fell short but the promising right-back may hit the radar again in the winter.

Comment #1I have sympathy for referees who have to make an on the field decision, in a fast paced sport, in an impassioned arena.
What is not excusable is someone sitting in a sanatorium environment with all the evidence at their disposal and forming the wrong conclusion.

Comment #2I like VAR. I don’t like how it is being used and interpreted by ex-referees at Stockley Park.
Points are not going to be reallocated, nor should they. Who is to say we would have beaten Palace? Refs on the pitch need to have the courage of their convictions, ask to see all angles and adjudicators should only interfere if a clear mistake has been made. VAR has helped us at Wolves with the Frazer push and failed us when the adjudicator didn’t feel Longstaff was tugged back sufficiently for a penalty. It failed us against City when Schar was fouled and helped with Trippier’s trip. Scrapping VAR is not the answer. Reforming Stockley Park is the answer. They should not be spending 4 minutes making a decision.

Comment #8On the offside ruling I’ve always thought it should be clear daylight between the attacker and the last defender using the feet as the guideline.
Would speed the game up as well.

Comment #13Var hasn’t helped us, it just made correct decisions. We haven’t had any dodgy ones go our way. Have we?
But we have been on the end of plenty, already.
Wolves goal was chalked off ‘cos of a foul.
Sean yanked, shoulda been a pen.

They could just say if the attackers foot is ahead of the defenders it’s off, even if it’s by a toenail. I could live with that as it’s fairly easy to manage and can’t be argued or subjective.
Some VAR decisions have chalked out goals like Isak’s vs Liverpool, but ruled Rashford’s as one and they are very similar.

Comment #21The Premier League should introduce the ability of managers to contest a ref or VAR decision during a match. But only a given number, say four (two each half).
For example, on Saturday Eddie would have contested the VAR decision and have (say three) neutrals review the decision.
Moyles would have contested their VAR decision.

Comment #30Rafa had to raise funds to get the players he needed to keep us in the Premier League. If he was backed by the owner Toney and perhaps even Mitrovic could have been allowed to grow as players while remaining at the club.
We all know this was not the situation, he had self generate funding.

Comment #32Toney. He was not very good when here. When did we let him go … 5-6 years ago maybe even longer? Looks like he has improved. At the time, to be honest, not even good enough for our U23 team.
So… I cannot criticise whoever sold him, I doubt there is one long term Toon on here who objected.
Good to see him blossom. Good luck to him
