Newcastle continue to be linked with young prospects. Yesterday, it was revealed that Rangers midfielder Cole McKinnon has been scouted extensively by the Magpies’ recruitment team. The 19-year-old is currently thriving on loan with Patrick Thistle.
Sport Witness has cited a report from Brazil that Newcastle have contacted Vasco da Gama over their starlet Andrey Santos. The 18-year-old has also drawn interest from Barcelona.
According to the report, Newcastle approached the Brazilian club for information on his situation. That may have alarmed the club as the young Brazilian has since penned a new five-year deal as his previous contract was due to expire next summer.
There is no indication the new contract contains a high release clause. Though Vasco likely rate the 18-year-old very highly and now hold all the cards after getting tying him down on a long-term basis.
Santos could be one to watch for in the coming years. He only turned 18 in May but has already racked up 23 first-team appearances for the Rio-based club. He is involved in the Brazil set-up having been called up for the Brazil U20s in June, though he didn’t make an appearance.

Comment #1I worry its going to ve a slow start to our campaign. We haven’t got the rub of the green so far and we should be 4-6 points higher up than we actually are.
But I have a bad feeling we aren’t going to get anything from the WH game on the weekend either.
I just have that feeling that WH are going to come out fighting like dogs because of their hard luck with results also. They have a brilliant team and they are going to be fit to kill us to try finally get a result.
Ontop of that we don’t travel well to London in the vast majority of our games we have there usually. Maxi and Bruno may not even be playing and if they are how fit will they be.
I’m not sure Eddie saying they were late fitness tests for Palace is any indication they will be fit for WH, it could all have been nonsense just to keep Palace guessing.
What does everyone else think?
I think we have the talent to win there on our day, but personally I’ve a feeling it will be one of those days where we end up losing.
But if we could come away with a win I’d be very very impressed no going to lie.

What are you worried about. We’re 100% not getting relegated and are playing well. A young team is bedding in. Like I said earlier, I think the only fans that will be disappointed this season are those that thought we’d carry on that top four form in to this season and break the top six. There is no hurry and things are working out very nicely.

Good afternoon Rob, to be honest i`m inclined to agree with some of the points in your post fella, and for that reason i would be very happy with a draw at West Ham even with Bruno and ASM back mate.

I predicted we would finish 8th this season, and as far as i`m concerned finishing 8th would represent fantastic progress, i personally think we are already well ahead of schedule, when you take into consideration the low base when Eddie took over the reins HWTL

Comment #7I don’t really care why we sold Mitro and Toney.
I just don’t understand why we kept Gayle over both of them.
Seems strange considering what both of them are doing now

Comment #8West Ham are not all that
On paper they have a good team but under Moyes he still can’t get them playing proper possession based football still very basic they don’t cope with high pressing teams
We should have beat them last season when they were at full strength and we played Wood up front
Rice got dominated by Joelinton and the same will happen on Sunday
Also they have a euro game on Thursday while we have a break

Comment #9With Maxi and Bruno back I think we beat them IMO. I think when you look at the Wolves away match, the only thing missing was Bruno to actually do something with the ball.
I fully expect us to have the higher possession, we just need Bruno back to make it count.
If neither start then I see a draw.

Because the manager couldn’t trust Mitro to follow a game plan or to not elbow a defender in the grid (at the time he was right), and Toney was pushing for first team football he wasn’t ready for at the top level (again, a correct decision IMO).
The only argument for Toney would be we should have loaned him out again, but we will never know if that was an option and the player refused.
Gayle was (at that time) a better player, quicker than both, better finisher and more proven at a higher level. Plus he played the way the manager wanted him to.
It was Bruce who offered him a contract way past his sell by date.

Comment #12Armstrong was poor when he was here and wasn’t that good for Southampton last season although there was a rumour Bruce wanted him back before the takeover he has still only had a couple of decent games with minimal goal return this season
Mitrovic its only this season and last he has looked good that’s almost what 3 or 4 seasons since we sold him? No one on here or in our home crowd would seriously have had the patience for him to come good and he certainly wouldn’t have if Bruce had been his manager
Toney looks great now but a while ago I posted a podcast that actually explained why players like him ended up leaving one of the main reasons why Ashworth is brought in is to make sure departments communicate!
As always you can blame a manager but that really only tells a little of the story the problem was always Ashley failed so many young players and teams with poor investment with no planning
Thank goodness we have the guys in charge we have now or Anderson would have been another on the scrap heap

Comment #13Been in level 7 a couple of times for European games. The view is quite good although a bit two dimensional.
What is immediately apparent is the tactical element of the game.
Towards the front of level 7 is a superb view.

Hope you are well my friend and enjoying your retirement.
Before the season started I thought a finish between 5th & 7th was achievable and I still feel that’s possible but….. we do need correct decisions from VAR and as many “fit players” as possible. I think we’ve been very unfortunate with both VAR decisions the injuries that we’ve had so far.
Keep smiling 🙂

What’s all this ‘no rush’ to finish top 6 stuff?
Try telling that to Eddie.
The last thing on Eddie’s mind will be to ‘take it slowly’ and aim for top 10/12.
He’ll be aiming to win every game and finish as high as possible, and I bet he doesn’t rule out top 6.
I know the point you are making, but it’s being made in the wrong way.
There is nothing wrong with fans thinking we can finish top 6, but they shouldn’t be brassed off if we finish 7th-10th.

I think the problem is when fans stop thinking about it in those terms. A lot of fans seem to expect top 6 this season so would see 8th as a major failure.
The reality is that it would still be a remarkable turnaround from a year ago, and a sure sign that we’re heading in the right direction.
I expect 8th, so anything above that is a bonus to me. Next year I will be disappointed if we aren’t pushing for European footy.

Comment #22Bit of a myth Mitrovic has been poor in the past. When he arrived he was 19.
19/20 years old. Newcastle (Prem) 34/ 9… Good in a relegated team
20/21 years old. (Champ)… Rarely played or sub. 25/4
21/22 years old. New (Prem) 6/1…. Championship 17/12
22/23 years old. Fulham (Prem)… 37/11… Very good in a relegated team
23/24 years old. (Champ) 40/26
24/25 years old. (Prem) 27/3 This was the one bad season, an unexplainable anomoly
25/26 years old. (Champ) 44/43. Any player scoring that much is going to do well in EPL.
26/27 years old. (Prem) 6/6. Not bad considering theyve played a lot of top 6 teams.
He’s also phenonemal for Serbia. 74/46
Personally I’d have played him over Gayle in a heartbeat and thought he was always better, but Rafa didn’t like him so that’s what was important. Gayle, and Joselu had more experience and were probably more tactical which is what Rafa needs.

Good afternoon John, always a pleasure to hear from you Sir, and yes really enjoying my retirement thanks my friend. We have come a million miles as a team and as a club from the previous administration John. In reference to this VAR shenanigans at the moment i would say some really poor decisions are going against a lot of clubs recently and not just Newcastle to be perfectly honest, so lets just hope they can sort it out so its fair and balanced for every club in the league. John how`s the form with you and the family lad, plus how`s the music situation for you at the moment John HWTL

Comment #25Again I would have tried to keep Toney on another seasons loan, he’d been looking good and improving year on year and was young. He looked really good when he played in a friendly. Playing old steady hands above young up and coming players might be best at the time, but for the long term its usually best to blood the youths and accept they might make mistakes. I can never see the sense of having useless 30+ year olds like Hendricks etc filling out the bench when you could be developing someone who might go on to be worth 50m. Depends if you want to give your self the best chance of winning the immediate game, or of building a future. Most managers know they’ll probably only last a year or two before getting sacked so often don’t care one bit about playing youths, whereas us fans are often thinking 5 years ahead.
I wanted us to sign Toney & Armstrong back when we got Wilson, they’d have cost about 15m for both, although Watkins was my first choice. Armstrong hasn’t been great, but I think he might do OK this year. The next one will be Woodman, give it two years.

In his first season in the prem for Fulham he scored the majority of those goals in the first months of the season then fell way off after that. Scored 5 in his opening 6 matches.
He’s likely to prove me wrong, but at the minute he’s on target to match his best PL season.

Comment #27It doesn’t really matter now, NY. We got lucky and can buy players. But if we were still going off Ashleys one out one in method, we’d have no money coming in and would be cursing our luck flogging all our younger players to focus on experience. We’d probably be down in Champo fighting it out with Sunderland unless Ashley pulled off a mastersrtoke and got us a great manager. Even though we are rich, I still think we should focus on youths

Comment #29Still underwhelming IMO, especially when you consider how highly regarded he is with some of our fans. It’s not a bad return overall, but some of our fans seem to rate him as the second coming of Shearer.
He’s lauded more than Demba Ba is in some sections of our fan base, which is crazy to me. Purely because he used to beat his chest and kiss the badge a bit.
Also worth noting that a lot of our fans hate Chris Wood who scored 10+ goals in a relegation scrapping team almost every season, but Mitro managed it once and he’s worshipped. I just don’t get the love in, apart from the odd game for us he was shite.

Comment #30I really dont care where we finish this year, I just want 6 players signed in Jan and next summer who are significantly better than our existing squad players and who will properly challenge the current “picks it-self” first 11…at least that way we’ll have the foundation to challenge.

It’ll be interesting to see what we do in Jan. If we’re comfortably in the top 10 I don’t think we’ll dip into the market too much, if we’re sitting in 8th and a point or two off 6th I wonder if we’ll gamble and invest to try and get up there or wait it out.
This summer could be special if we get a load of new sponsors in.

I don’t think anyone would expect or be happy with 10/12th, martoon would know better but I think 8th would be the most popular choice in his predictions. Of course Eddie H would take 6th but I bet when they sit round a table and discuss it, nobody is expecting or asking for that. The mananager has bought so much goodwill that I doubt very much he is being set targets for now though.

Comment #39Mitro had just turned 20 when we got him. 9 goals at 20 in a relegation team at 20 is very good. Wood got 10 a season in his prime. He was past his Prime and about 30 when we got him. Also He’s got a goal record of about 1 in 16 games from open play for us. I’d reverse what you said and say It’s strange some people slagged off Mitro or ASM or Ben Arfa or Lascelles, but praise Wood. 9 goals at 20 with room to grow is better than 1 at 30 any day.
