Newcastle have identified Leicester City’s James Maddison as the top target for January according to The Northern Echo. The 25-year-old will have just 18 months left on his contract when the winter window opens.
The Magpies tried to land the playmaker over the summer but had two bids rejected. The second bid was reportedly around £40m, though it is understood to have been heavily structured.
Leicester have limped out of the gate to start the new campaign with just 1 point. They sit at the bottom of the league table having lost the last five on the trot. Maddison has contributed 2 goals and 1 assist in his five league appearances.
Eddie Howe was hopeful of adding another midfielder with Jonjo Shelvey sidelined until November with a hamstring injury. Maddison’s teammate Youri Tielemans, Ajax’s Edson Alvarez, and Chelsea’s Conor Gallagher were also on the shortlist.
Ultimately, those efforts came up short and the injury to Bruno Guimaraes has limited Howe’s options in recent weeks. Though, Elliot Anderson has been given an opportunity over that span and has not disappointed.
Premier League pundit and former England striker Ian Wright recently claimed that Maddison wanted the move to Newcastle. If true, he remained professional and didn’t try to force the situation like his teammate Wesley Fofana, who joined Chelsea late in the window.
If Leicester’s situation doesn’t improve soon, manager Brendan Rodgers’ job could be in jeopardy. Incidentally, Chelsea have fired Thomas Tuchel this morning after a 1-0 defeat at Dinamo Zagreb in the Champions League.
Leicester is facing an exodus with a number of stars on contracts that expire over the next two seasons. Tielemans is in the final year of his deal and Leicester were open to allowing him to leave for £25m in the summer.
Another potential summer target to watch this winter is Leeds’ Jack Harrison. Newcastle had bids in the £20m range rejected for the 25-year-old, who has struggled in recent weeks.
Harrison will have just 18 months left on his contract in January and was pulled at halftime in Leeds’ 5-2 loss at Brentford over the weekend. Like Maddison, Harrison reportedly was keen on joining Newcastle this summer.

Comment #121Where did all this stuff originate from – when the board/owners did what they wanted (in respect of buying players) without any input from the manager/coach.
I just cannot recall who started it all – is it an American import.

I’m sure there was a rail strike when we played Brighton – surely a lot more difficult to get from Newcastle to Brighton with no trains than London to Brighton??

Comment #1249 – I didn’t say that Bruno has dodgy fitness. I said that he’s missed a few matches. Also, fans are often basing our predicted finish on our very good first team whereas it also has to be acknowledged that our second string is much weaker. If Bruno gets injured for a while, our midfield will be much poorer for it and probably scupper any chances of top 6.
I also agree that Wilson is a class player and I think he’d have been playing for one of the big 6 clubs years ago if it wasn’t for his fitness issues. Really hoping he gets even 20 games this season.
It’s all about opinions but when you look at our squad as a whole, consider injuries, suspensions etc, look at our backup options, and then look at the squads that the big 6 have, I think it’s very unlikely we finish above any of them. I think one of them would need to have a genuinely bad season for it to happen. And when you look at the squads of West Ham, Wolves, Leicester and Villa, I’d say our squads are comparable. I often use Transfermarkt to look at the squads and any stats. Very interesting site.

I think it’s because they’re close and the stadium can’t handle the bottleneck of traffic of all the people coming in cars, there must have been loads of problems at our game and given the amount that would also arrive in cars from South London, they’ve decided to cancel.

Comment #1499 I can’t agree that 1 win in 6 is terrible considering the opposition thus far:
2-0 vs Forest – we should expect to win that and did.
0-0 vs Brighton away – always going to be a tricky fixture and I think a fair result.
3-3 vs Manc City – In what is likely match of the season – cant complain.
1-1 vs wolves, slight disappointing perhaps, but we didn’t lose.
2-1 vs Liverpool- and we were robbed of a point due to phantom minutes.
0-0 vs Palace again slight disappointing especially given VAR but there is no guarantee we would have one the game if that decision had gone in our favour, but again we didn’t lose
So in summary we went toe to toe with the top two teams in the country and only failed to get a point out of Liverpool cos the refs watches are broken! Were it not for that one thing we would be unbeaten in our first 6!

This is a political move, trust me..
Liz hasn’t wasted any time to manipulate the public against those pesky unions..
The fact that the EPL have sanctioned it,is mind boggling..
Remember not that long ago,the EPL was played behind closed doors..
Unbelievable Jeff..
If I was CP I would be kicking up a stink especially considering Brightons possible managerial status..

Suit yourself. I’ve always believed “The League Table doesn’t Lie”. Every point you make may be valuable but, the FACT is, we have a miserable 1 win from 6 matches.
TDS : how come we had the 3rd best points tally against all these clubs in 2022? I didn’t make this up (as you know) -it’s a FACT. So why should NUFC worry about all the clubs you mention? They should (and do) worry about us, as following results will clearly prove (OPINION)

Comment #1579 – 1 agree the league table does not lie but I look at it as one loss (an illegitimate loss I my mind) in 6 games and having played the best two teams in country and the current best team outside the established top 6 in Brighton.

Comment #158Sir Bobby saved us from relegation then next season finished 11th after signing Cort, Bassedas, Cordone etc.
Then the 3rd season he got 4th after signing Bellamy and Robert.
With that in mind my expectations for this season is low as we don’t have a good goal output in this squad apart from Wilson who is rarely fit. So I expect a 14th to 11th place finish this season but next season I expect top 4/6 for definite
