Duo Expected Back For Fulham With Winger’s Return Date Unclear

Newcastle had Bruno Guimaraes back in the lineup for today’s 1-1 draw against Bournemouth. However, it was too soon for Allan Saint-Maximin and Callum Wilson. Their omission along with the surprise absence of Elliot Anderson handed Eddie Howe limited options up front.

Newcastle needed a spark as ideas in the final third were hard to come by. Anderson would have provided something different from the bench and his youthful determination was sorely missing this afternoon.

Anderson, who was not spotted in Wednesday’s training images, missed the game with what Howe described as a ‘very minor niggle’. Howe stated Elliot would be fit for the October 1st trip to Fulham. We’ll find out if his niggle impacts his availability for the Scotland U21s next week.

Howe also revealed that Wilson is very close to a return. He was not risked today but should be ready to go at Craven Cottage in two weeks. However, the situation with Saint-Maximin is a little murkier as the winger has suffered a setback.

This is what Howe said about his dynamic duo as published in The Northern Echo:

“Callum’s doing very well, we’re really pleased with his progress. He was close for today, but I think we made an early decision that it would have been too big a risk.

“So, we hope that with a bit more time, there’s a chance that the next game could be good for him.

“With Allan, it’s slightly different. He’s had a very minor setback with the physios, so whether or not he’ll be fit after the international break is slightly unclear.

“It’s certainly not long-term, but it’s not clear whether he’ll be fit for our next game yet.”

The injuries to Guimaraes, Wilson, and Saint-Maximin have shown that Newcastle lack strength in depth. Their absences have likely cost valuable points at St. James’ Park. Though they should all be ready to go for the packed October schedule.

Nijmegen, I’m not overreacting. Are you really saying that we shouldn’t be beating Palace and Bournemouth at St. James Park? We’re not the same team that started in such poor form last season. We’ve added Bruno, Target, Burn, Botman, Pope, Isak, Wood, and Trippier.

I’m not saying Eddie is the wrong man for the job or anything insane like that. I do think right now, in this season, results need to improve.

I didn’t expect a CL place. I do think top-10 is progress (although it would be minimal if we finished 10th after 11th last season). One win in seven is disappointing. Six games without a win is disappointing. Even if we’re missing two starters, we should be beating Bournemouth at St. James Park.

I expect their GK will be their MOM.

What more is to be said?

I don’t think our owners are as fickle as a few fans on here.
You think they’ll be questioning a manager with just these 6 defeats this calendar year?

    Chelsea (A)
    Everton (A)
    Tottenham (A)
    Liverpool (H) & (A)
    Man City (A)

We’ve lost ONE game so far this season, against Liverpool, and we were unlucky to lose that one!
Yes, we’ve drawn a lot this term, but we’ve been the better team in all those games bar Brighton IMO.
Today we were denied by the woodwork twice, and their keeper was voted MOTM, and yet we’ve all come away disappointed with the performance. How positive is that !!

I repeat ONE DEFEAT this season and arguably we’ve still yet to get our strongest starting eleven on the pitch!!

It’s been less than twelve months for this ownership and manager.
Players are still gelling, key players returning from injury, and better players will undoubtedly come in future windows.
It’s a work in progress, we’ve come a long way but we’re nowhere near the finished article.
The manager knows it, most of us fans know it, but more importantly our fantastic ownership know it too.

    Perspective, and patience.

    DKillers,
They are definitely easier fixtures than Liverpool or Man City but Palace we had a goal riled out and today we hit the woodwork twice. If they go in it changes the complexion of a game and raises the crowd. I’m not sure why the owners replacing Howe is even in discussion. It’s an angry overreaction to a frustrating day.

    mctoon,
It’s actually terrible to see that it’s even a discussion, today was awful but truly shows the difference to where we are and where we want to be. Howe has fulfilled his first side of the bargain by coming in and keeping us up and improving every player in to the bargain. What manager could change a game with Chris Wood and Jacob Murphy coming on. Pochetino, Conte? Nagelesman is struggling to get a tune out of Mane right now. In January we might have Maddison in and Murphy sent back to Norwich, in the summer we might have Fraser sent to Rangers and Almiron restricted to the bench, it was never going to happen overnight.

I would like to see some improvement after the break, though. Eddie is capable of producing it.

Brief interlude in sleep so just peeped in.

The notion that VAR evens itself out with decions is a nonsense.
Today it merely confirmed an obvious penalty in the same way as it confirmed the obvious foul against Fraser in the Wolves game where the ref should have blown long before adding the drama of disallowing a so called goal – whete he could otherwise have booked the Wolves player for putting the ball into the net way after the whistle had gone, which was how it used to be.

In contrast the clear foul by Stones in the box in the City game and the clear goal against Palace were miscarriages of justice by inept refeering that was then ‘covered up’ by more than suspicious VAR officiating – which by comparison felt like as if the Judge had been bribed in a TV court case drama.

These decisions not only corrupt results they take momentum out of team intensity and performance in subsequent games. As we saw today. Otherwise we’d be in the top six but if course that isn’t allowed. So we need to do someting about it. At least 4 new players needed in January and Willock, Longstaff, Miggy and Murphy even Fraser need to be looking over their shoulders as to who’s coming in. When we got to the byline yesterday noone attacked near post crosses albeit often very poor ones. We seemed to fail to cut back to the edge of the box although that was often congested.

The ref was in love with the Bournemouth players who held hand with him most of the game. He should have booked them for crowd g round him, not retreating at free kicks and time wasting. It was a weak performance by him with no authority.

The sort of upgrade we need to continue the rebuilding plan.

Newcastle United are reportedly looking to target Dynamo Kyiv winger Victor Tsygankov in the January transfer window before his contract runs out completely.

Tsygankov, who has 40 senior caps for his country along with seven goals, is on the watchlist of many of Europe’s top clubs including the likes of Borussia Dortmund and RB Leipzig, with Wolves and West Ham United also interested.

I hate the ‘stats’ but Bournemouth had 8 interceptions of passes to our one. Always feel that we so times lack the vision for defence splitting passes. They need to be more instinctive and when you have players like Willock with his back to goal before collecting the ball from defence before turning to see if there’s any options going forward then momentum and opportunity are lost. That slows the game down and allows a defence to read the game. I suspect Ciity, Arsenal and now Spurs are more effective in their speed of play as they go forward. Slow is not always best, we need more fluidity, maybe without Max and Callum that’s the difference. A punchy attacking midfielder is a must now.

Nijmegen-toon – agree it’s way too soon to talk about manager change unless the new owners turns the club into Roman’s version of Chelsea regarding hiring and firing of managers within a short space of time.
Most of the white noise started since Tuchel became available and should be treated as such but our current form is reminiscent of Howe’s 2017-18 season of drawgitis. 11W 11D 16L

Shocked with the booing at the end of the game (all be it from a small minority) and the OTT comments on the blog – no wonder some will call us deluded….

We’re transitioning from a counter attacking team (or a team with no plan under Bruce) to a possession based team and people can not grasp the bigger picture.

Unfortunately it will take another few windows to get the 3-4 additional players who can provide the missing pieces that are glaringly missing.

However I’ll certainly enjoy watching this style of football rather than the dross served up by Bruce.

When was the last time we had or 73% possession in a game?
    # There was a time when anything above 30% and having 2 shots in goal was seen as a positive…

    Keep the faith!

Those two in the picture are possibly our best players.

But they are also possibly our most injury prone.

Hate to say this, but we maybe can’t rely on them too much for the above reason, nothing to do with talent.

Re where we stand generally, John Somebody said it. We were recently the compact team, inviting the opposition to attack and break us down, valiantly holding out (sometimes). Now it’s on the other shoe.

We have to learn to break down those teams or we’ll become draw kings.

Reality check yesterday. A few of the players need upgrading but still cannot get my head around the finances that we are allowed/not allowed under FFP.

So we’ll just have to wait for the next window(s) for upgrades.

Not panicking at the moment but we need at least another forward and an attacking midfielder – at least.

The likes of Miggy, Fraser, Murphy need shipping out.

I respect people who can remain positive at all times, its a good quality in life to keep your mental health in top notch… But… I cant see how some people have ideas about 4th, yet accept such a performance. It doesn’t add up in my mind. I have personally lowered my expectations allot, because we just cant seem to maintain that high standard this season.

Even Eddie himself was critical of that performance, and so he should be. If we cant beat relegation candidates at home, then there isn’t much hope of finishing higher than midtable. Im not saying we wont, but on the current form, there isn’t much hope. There was a zoom in on our owners near the end, and they didn’t look impressed.

Our next signings should be two new midfielders to sit next to Bruno and a good RW in my view. I feel that Diaby is out of reach now, but Im sure our scouting team has a back up solution. I know some people are sick of it, and in any case it’s over and done with, but I think that this game showed that we made a huge mistake not going for Paqueta when he was there to be signed.

Had a feeling there was miles too much optimism of a tonking and said so on friday. It was a very poor performance and irrespective of injuries, Eddie needs to work on our creative side. Miggy needs to either be dropped or moved to the left and I do find that he doesn’t deviate much from Plan A, and that’s a weakness. But the club chose not to go for Pedro when we we used up the budget on Isak, a spend that we didn’t think we would need to make. I think Downie was correct – we had intended to spend about 35mill plus 1-2 loanees but ended up spending 60, because we were forced to and either by playing it safe under FFP or safe under the budget, we then decided not to go for Pedro. Yesterday we partly saw the outcome on not going for Pedro. It was a poor decision. Eddie needs to improve things fast, and I’ve no idea why he sticks with Miggy and makes late subs and didn’t play Botman, but talk of him not being good enough or being sacked is madness. He needs and deserves patience.

As well as an organised defence, we were blunted and vulnerable by our own tactics. Insisting that the wingers stay inverted means the ball is played in front of the defence. We had to rely on the full backs to get behind the defence, which left us exposed to the counter attack and meant that a midfielder had to pull back away from the centre. When we did play the ball in behind the resulting cross hardly ever found one of our players as their positioning is due to the above. A very frustrating day for us all, fans and players and manager and owners.

Valle I agree, Paqueta is a super player. I don’t think Bruno has the creative talents of him or a Maddison and I think it’s an attacking mid we need, not a destroyer. We are strong defensively, but not so strong creatively. Bear in mind though, it might be hard to get what we need in January so patience will be needed. I said 8th or 9th and it might be a good bet, although bím not sure 9th is good enough for keep Bruno fully engaged. The Paqueta non move was odd I felt, and totally misread by a few noisies on here, but losing him to west ham wasn’t smart.

I agree that pointing the finger at Eddie is premature and just wrong… Eddie came out and said all of the right things yesterday, he wasn’t happy about that performance, and something was missing was his words I think. I expect changes for the next game, although he doesn’t have a lot to work with in midfield.

But our supporters should be firmly behind Eddie. We have no idea if it was even his signings this season. However, our Saudi owners will not have been impressed, they want results, especially after spending 200 million in 2022. I just hope that they are as patient with him as the fans should be.

A player like Paqueta would have been more important in our team, in my mind than Isak. I would rather have Wood in attack with a creative force behind him, than a better attacker with no creativity behind him. But it is as it is, I dont know who pushed that decision through, but it was a mistake.

We had 70% possession and scored from a penalty, ignoring the ‘long ball’ part of Neves’ out burst (which describes the opposite to being able to play the ball technically) the statement is very suitable. If the opposition prepare to drop deep, we have little to create clear cut chances. Hence ASM’s goal of the month coming from an opportunistic clearance.
