Newcastle head into the international break on the back of a disappointing 1-1 draw at home to Bournemouth. The performance lacked urgency and a cutting edge all afternoon.
Neither team made a change after the scoreless first half. Both clubs had early chances to start the second half with Fraser and Joelinton unable to get their shots on target while Pope made a comfortable save on Dominic Solanke’s low shot.
Bournemouth opened the scoring in the 62nd minute. Jordan Zamora’s cross was flicked past Pope by Philip Billing into the net to make it 1-0. The goal was against the run of play but Newcastle, while dominating possession, had shown little ingenuity in the final third.
Newcastle won a penalty a few minutes later. Trippier’s cross into the box hit Jefferson Lerma’s slightly extended arm. It was initially not given but a pitchside review awarded the spot kick. Isak stepped up and planted it into the bottom corner to make it 1-1.
After a minute of applause for Queen Elizabeth II, Howe brought Jacob Murphy and Sean Longstaff on for Fraser and Guimaraes in the 71st minute. It was a straight swap with Murphy on the left and Sean anchoring the midfield.
Howe went to the bench again with just a minute remaining in normal time. Chris Wood came on for Almiron to get a presence in the box for the 6 minutes of stoppage time.
It was more of the same as Newcastle were completely bereft of ideas in the attacking third. The draw moves Newcastle to 10th in the table but it’s more points lost at St. James’ Park.

Comment #1Terrible performance an yet another draw, we aren’t getting wins and its worrying, our strength in depth is absolutely piss poor and I said this multiple times during the transfer window, we are going to regret not signing more players.
Murphy Fraser Longstaff and Willock are simply not good enough.
Drawing to Bournemouth at home is a pathetic result and simply no good enough.

Isak or Wood, no difference if no creativity in the middle or services into the box.

Comment #5Many were saying we needed a defensive midfielder but I’d been of a mind that what we really needed was a top tier No 10 who can unlock defences and that game highlighted exactly why we needed that player. Someone like Maddison would have been able to unlock that deep back four with a clever incisive pass into Isaks feet in the box and we’d have won that comfortably.
We’re having shots on goal but none of them are truly “big” chances because we lack that creative playmaker. Go all out for Maddison in January but until then we will struggle against deep sitting defensive teams at home.

Comment #14This is getting absurd clearly creative wing player is needed in January. I love Almiron’s work rate but he’s not creative enough to play out wide

Pawson was supposed to be an upgrade. Nothing has changed from the referees.
But we still should have done better. Very disappointed today. Maybe the lads are training too hard? I just don’t know what excuse we can use today? Yes we have a couple of key players injured but we should still have enough to win.

Comment #16Here’s the crazy thing, we have only 5 more points from our first 7 games. Compared to our worst start in Premier league history last year.
Let that sink in….

Comment #17I think some additional crossong training is needed for Target, Willock, Fraser and Almiron. What Isak or whoever can do or what dangerous set piece we can do if there are no proper crossings. However, we got ambitious owners, wise manager, so they all see that and will push us further. No more fatty 🙂

Comment #19We hit the post twice. Their keeper was man of the match. We need to improve and I think we will. We should have won today but to make a comparison to Steve Bruce’s team and results is a joke.
Remember how we improved as the last season progressed. We are progressing.

Comment #20Sorry lads what a load of rubbish today I like eddy but don’t think he the manger for us we needed a couple of proven goal scores but we got a 60 million player who my turn out to be good bu wet need someone to score goals now nor later.

But what is pathetic is not the result, it’s some of the comments on here afterwards. We’re not a team that has been used to teams sitting back against us – that’s because we’ve been rubbish in the past and relied on the counter attack.
Work to do on the training ground. Creative addition needed in January. But everything cannot change in an instant.

Comment #23Gutted we didn’t win, but Bournemouth played well. Big Joe nearly had a belter, if not for post. We need Maxi and Wilson back. Still think Isak will be great for us, just needs a few more games. We do need to be getting more from games like this but Howe not to blame, just bad luck and injuries. We’ll be areet HWTL

Our attacking play is simply not good enough without ASM. Howe needs a plan B for when he’s not fit.

7 games in and we keep saying `we almost won` – – it is probably true but much longer and any agenda to be a decent team is gone.
i would say we are still very much a bottom half team..sadly. And, i think it is pretty clear why. Everybody knew we needed a player maker like maddison.
didnt buy one? its costing us already..big time

Comment #29Said same Ruddy. Bruno isn’t quite good enough to play as a 10, or further up from where he is. We needed a Maddison. Maybe a paqueta, or a Pedro. But we didn’t spend. As I always said, I felt it was because we were budget and FFP conscious, and club comments confirm that. But if you don’t spendon creativity, and you lose one creative player, that’s what you get.
Isak looks like a guy more suited to speedy counter attack, than a team with high possession. But the 60mill cooked the budget.

Comment #31Listless! I could think of better adjectives to describe it which sadly I am unable to use on here. No depth in the squad, No game changers to bring off the bench, Can’t honestly see a top half finish this season on that performance. Will need to spend big in January as Fraser, Murphy, Longstaff and Wood to name just four are simply not good enough.

I agree with that, Willock put in yet another substandard performance so I certainly would favour Anderson. Is he injured, is that why he wasn’t in the squad?
