Newcastle head into the international break on the back of a disappointing 1-1 draw at home to Bournemouth. The performance lacked urgency and a cutting edge all afternoon.
Neither team made a change after the scoreless first half. Both clubs had early chances to start the second half with Fraser and Joelinton unable to get their shots on target while Pope made a comfortable save on Dominic Solanke’s low shot.
Bournemouth opened the scoring in the 62nd minute. Jordan Zamora’s cross was flicked past Pope by Philip Billing into the net to make it 1-0. The goal was against the run of play but Newcastle, while dominating possession, had shown little ingenuity in the final third.
Newcastle won a penalty a few minutes later. Trippier’s cross into the box hit Jefferson Lerma’s slightly extended arm. It was initially not given but a pitchside review awarded the spot kick. Isak stepped up and planted it into the bottom corner to make it 1-1.
After a minute of applause for Queen Elizabeth II, Howe brought Jacob Murphy and Sean Longstaff on for Fraser and Guimaraes in the 71st minute. It was a straight swap with Murphy on the left and Sean anchoring the midfield.
Howe went to the bench again with just a minute remaining in normal time. Chris Wood came on for Almiron to get a presence in the box for the 6 minutes of stoppage time.
It was more of the same as Newcastle were completely bereft of ideas in the attacking third. The draw moves Newcastle to 10th in the table but it’s more points lost at St. James’ Park.

Comment #41Dear me,. Howay lads, calm it down. Remember how we started last season and how we ended up finishing?. There are posters going on as if we are on a downward spiral. Giver ower,. Let’s see how the rest of the season pans out eh?. I appreciate we’ve only won once this season but remember,. We should have at least another 5-7 points if it weren’t for VAR.
See how we played against Man City and Liverpool. We should have beaten them both if it were not for very dodgy decisions. We seem to struggle against teams that defend in numbers as we didn’t have the cutting edge to break them down today. Luck wasn’t on our side also, if it was we would be high fiving as it’s a game of fine margins. But we really missed Wilson and maximum today and it would have been a different story as they would have been the difference to break this resolute team down. We need a Madison in January that’s for sure.
Keep the faith ladies and gentlemen. Today was a blip not a tragedy as so many are alluding to on here. Don’t forget where we’ve came in such a period of time.
In Eddie we trust we will be fine, and the team will take a lessons learned from today, it’s what we do we come back stronger. Keep the faith

Comment #43The Ledge – we are a mile of sixth place on that performance sadly. Still three or four quality players short and Isak at present at £60M looks very expensive.
No threat from open play despite loads of possession.

Comment #47A very subdued performance. Very little spark.
More teams will come to St James Park and defend deep becoming reliant on breakaways.
We have to learn how to break down packed defences.
Maxi was missed and also young Elliott.

Comment #48We’re witnessing the 1st bump in the road, but it’s not bigly!
International break, Maxi and Wilson back. Followed by Shelvey. Need a good run before WC.
They’re going to have to try and upgrade in January as we’re mid table at best when we have a few injuries.
I expect to be in 8th position when the WC breaks.

Comment #49Bruno had a poor game today, on his day he can unlock a defence with a key pass but today wasn’t his day … we’ll get better but expectations are now as high and fans will get frustrated ( hence the booing at end of game ). I wouldn’t take the comments straight after a match that seriously as everyone is very frustrated … I think pretty much everyone expected a win and a pretty big one at that .. they parked the bus against Liverpool and were hammered … shows how far we need to go which is pretty much replace half the team

Comment #52We’ve been a one-man team for 3 years now. No Maxi, no use. despite a bunch of brilliant signings, we have no more creativity. These results this season are disgusting, barely a goal in sight if ASM isn’t on song (which he isn’t, always) and Wilson, an international class goal-scorer, turns out to be sick note. Is Eddy pushing them too hard in training? Our 3 stars all crocked in August takes some swallowing, and now Darlow and Anderson (what a breath of fresh air he could be!) crocked as well.
Come on in Maddison, how we need you!

Managed to watch the game over in Bangladesh.
Result feels more like a loss than a draw. Think we all had this down as a banker home win. We’ll be ok compared to previous seasons (10 more wins to be safe lol). The wings need a serious upgrade. I love miggy, but… end product still an issue, although I love his pressing. Fraser will do well to make the Scotland squad on that performance. I really wanted him to step up in st maxs absebce but unfortunately maxi walks back into the team on that display. Murphy, great positional awareness but no strength or crossing ability. We had no options from the bench. I would have put on wood 15 mins earlier and had Isak play in willock’s position to bring him in the game more (and left miggy on). Wingers now required next please Amanda

Comment #60When teams park the bus with us its going to be difficult because of how we play. It was the best way to beat us and they played a blinder and almost did it.
Must say bringing on Longstaff for Bruno and Wood for Almiron doesnt get me very excited.
Soon as we get Shelvey back in the team the better. He is our artist able to break teams down with those killer passes. Bruno is good there but i think he would suit playing more of a box to box role alongside Joelinton slightly higher up the field.
All we need then is 3 of Almiron/Maximin/Wilson/Isak up front and that team for me would always find a way.
Shelvey i think is sorely missed in our team. A lot of his work goes unoticed but in terms of controlling games his tactical awareness and pin point passing its a big blessing in these type of games. Hes also not shy to make these type of passes which is what we need. No one seems to take responsibilty when it comes to passing like he does.
Got a big feeling once Shelvey is back in the team we will start winning games and turning draws into decent wins!

Comment #61Today, our team lacked determination. Always running with the ball. Passing goes way to slow, that way Bournemouth always got time to balance their team. Miggy and Fraser are working their socks off, but they have no end product. Just not the standard needed to pick out Isak. He got poor poor service today.

Comment #63This game shows perfectly just how good Wilson is when he’s fit. He’d make Isaks performance today look like Sunday league.
I’m sure he will come good but fk me he’s been fairly poor the last 2 games. Absolutely zero improvement over Wood as it stands.

I dont think anybody is saying we are on the down. It doesnt mean we cant be pissed off when we play like this. I am getting a bit annoyed about the over optimism and complaining about some fans (like me) calling it how it is.
We are a very average team with big problems still. We know we cannot fix them all in a few weeks but it doesnt stop it being any less annoying to watch. We all knew X player wouldnt do a thing for us, because they havent for the last 5 years.
i dont write off 38 games and say ok, it will get better at some point. i react to what i am watching and say what i see.
we are on the way up sure, it doesnt mean we arent watching some serious dross in attack.
i am seriously fed up of watching fraser and miggy dicking about.
is this better than before the takeover, no.
the biggest difference before the takeover and now.. I didnt watch the games because we were so shit.
unfortunately we have some of the same crap players hanging about.
Just to be very clear. I am hugely positive about our future and i trust the guys in charge.
BUT. some of our players and play is bottom of the table garbage, so let people say that, if they want to.

Comment #66Fenham lad get real. We cant keep making VAR as an excuse and despite playing well against Man City and Liverpool we only got 1 point from the possible six.
Nah, we should be murdering teams like Bournemouth if we are to finish top half.
That was extremely poor but reflected the fact that we were unable to bring in more quality owing to ‘fair play” constraints.
Fair play doesn’t come into it. Its the former rich six still bossing the Premier League. !

Comment #71When we have the depth of squad to sub actual premier league players on to the pitch, that’s when we can start thinking about European spots and top 6 finishes.
Bringing on championship quality players such as Murphy, Wood and Longstaff when you’re trying to break down a stubborn rear guard and win a game just isn’t going to cut it at this level.
We put about 20 crosses into the front post and not once was one attacked, Wilson usually gets goals from the near post run so if we’re going to go with that tactic he needs to be on the pitch.
Almiron, as much as I like the guy and his work rate, provides absolutely zero end product, ever. His lack of right foot means he constantly has to spin round, cut back into the traffic and pass it back across the pitch. Its not working on the left side of the attack for me and we need to try something different.
Maxi is a huge huge miss, he’d have dragged about 3 Bournemouth players out of their shape every time he got the ball, the sooner we get him back in the better.
Why did we not see Anderson at some point? He’s done more in his little cameo appearances than the other players who came off the bench today have done put together. He’d have thrived today having a run against their defence I reckon.
Any road, onwards and upwards to Fulham away, we need to start getting wins on the board because all these teams that had awful starts to the season are now only within a point or two of us.

Comment #768 points from 7 games if replicated over the course of a whole season is 43.43 points which would have been 8.43 points clear from relegation last season, 15.43 points clear from relegation in 2020/21 season, and 9.43 points clear from relegation in 2019/20 season. In fact, no team has ever been relegated with that many points.
Get a grip lads, we’re not in a relegation scrap.
