Listless Newcastle Draw 1-1 Against Bournemouth At St. James’ Park

Newcastle head into the international break on the back of a disappointing 1-1 draw at home to Bournemouth. The performance lacked urgency and a cutting edge all afternoon.

Neither team made a change after the scoreless first half. Both clubs had early chances to start the second half with Fraser and Joelinton unable to get their shots on target while Pope made a comfortable save on Dominic Solanke’s low shot.

Bournemouth opened the scoring in the 62nd minute. Jordan Zamora’s cross was flicked past Pope by Philip Billing into the net to make it 1-0. The goal was against the run of play but Newcastle, while dominating possession, had shown little ingenuity in the final third.

Newcastle won a penalty a few minutes later. Trippier’s cross into the box hit Jefferson Lerma’s slightly extended arm. It was initially not given but a pitchside review awarded the spot kick. Isak stepped up and planted it into the bottom corner to make it 1-1.

After a minute of applause for Queen Elizabeth II, Howe brought Jacob Murphy and Sean Longstaff on for Fraser and Guimaraes in the 71st minute. It was a straight swap with Murphy on the left and Sean anchoring the midfield.

Howe went to the bench again with just a minute remaining in normal time. Chris Wood came on for Almiron to get a presence in the box for the 6 minutes of stoppage time.

It was more of the same as Newcastle were completely bereft of ideas in the attacking third. The draw moves Newcastle to 10th in the table but it’s more points lost at St. James’ Park.

Toon tang; Anderson wasn’t in the squad today. We were unfortunate today, especially in the first half. We ran out of steam and ideas in the second half.
We will improve. The football we are playing is miles away from where we were last season.

I don`t think there is a single Toon fan who isn`t optimistic about the future, or is unhappy with how the club is progressing, but you have to be honest after watching that shoite that there is bound to be criticism of the performance today.
We were so predictable going forward, same pattern of play , time and time again, clueless in the final 3rd, it was easy for Bournemouth to defend against.
We are better away from home where teams come at us and we catch them on the counter with pace.
When we are at home teams are starting to sit back and we haven`t a clue how to unlock them.
How many balls did we play down the channels to Isak today? i can`t remember many , if any.

The Bournemouth fans did say that Howe doesn`t have a plan B, after watching that today i might have to agree with them.
Right that`s me off oot for a pint or several, i need some liquid comfort.

If we set our bravado scale too high, we’re only ever going to be disappointed.

    ‘Twas a chastening experience, huh?

Ruddy – Has anyone actually said that we are likely to be in a relegation battle?
But if you are happy with that display then sadly you are disillusioned . Sorry but this is not a dig at you . Everyone on here is entitled to their own opinion.

Eddie needs to change Almiron’s position. On the whole, any time an incisive pass comes into Almiron, he either stops the move so he can switch feet, or he u-turns out of the box to facilitate switching feet. I don’t understand how we can watch this happen game after game.

I appreciate his tireless running, but he is absolutely killing our attacking moves.

Willock is a good midfielder when we’re playing counter attacking football. All of his best attributes (pace, energy) are as a counter attacking player and that’s exactly what we needed at the time we bought him.
However, when we play possession football as we are trying to do now, he looks like a square peg in a round hole and it highlights some of his weaknesses such as breakdown passing and moving the ball quickly. He’s just too predictable at the moment and needs to be dropped or stuck out wide instead of Miggy.

There’s a different mentality to teams turning up at SJP, last season we were viewed as whipping boys and teams turned up to attack. Now they’re coming to sit deep and at the moment, in Frazer, Almiron, Willock and Murphy we lack the quality to break teams down.

I don’t remember who it was but someone did comment that 8 points from 7 games was relegation scrap territory and I just clarified that it isn’t.

I’m with you though, I think that performance was incredibly disappointing and highlights some glaring deficiencies in our squad so no I’m in no way happy with that performance

    1. Too slow to put in crosses
    2. Only Trippier crosses the ball. Almiron cant cross. Willock on that side dint help out either.
    3. Bournemouth did well.

I think howe is doing a good job, very good job. I am not sure we can get much more from what we have.

despite my frustrations and calling this out a lot on the blog. I am not sure he can do anything else.

He has to deal with the hand he is dealt now. I dont doubt he wanted somebody better than fraser and miggy. no offense to them either, good pros. just not at the level we want.

i am trying to adjust my enthusiasm for this year, its going to be a frustrating season i think. its hard to watch a bit.

    Another transfer window or 2…

    You have a point.
I’d add…we have to play possession as teams are dropping back, as opposed to attacking us, in the past.
So now they’re the counter attackers. We need to adapt. Draw them out!

As always some over the top posts during the match.

Bad performance today. It’s like we are desperate for that goal and to take all 3 points. We need to be calmer on the ball and have better options around us.

The problem today for me was the transition from defence to midfield. We had our defenders playing long balls when we have 3 in the middle. What’s the point in bypassing the whole of midfield with long balls to Isak, Fraser or Miggy…? 9/10 we lost possession doing this. If there isn’t an option then just pass it back and start again but the movement today wasn’t great. We should of kept possession better instead of losing it off the wrong pass. The lads seemed shot of confidence and should of been prepared for a tough battle but we lost most of our 50/50 battles.

We were slow and intensity was really low. You have to keep on your toes and keep moving giving options or the very least dragging player with you to open up spaces but that didn’t happen and we made it very easy for Bournemouth to defend against.

It looked like we had no game plan whatsoever and were lost with ideas. When a team is difficult to play against like Bournemouth were today it’s about keeping possession and putting that frustration back onto the opponents.

Really disappointed with the result as I had this down for a resurgence but sadly it was the complete opposite.

Maxi is missed and no matter how good Miggy can look in moments he is absolutely toothless in the final third. He needs to be replaced and sold.

Quite shocked at some saying Bruno can’t play as a 10. Have you forgotten last season…? We missed a Jonjo today who will drop deep and play those killer passes.

    On to the next one

Who plays on the right ? Maybe when Wilson and ASM are back ASM or Isak plays right. But till then Almiron is all we got.

Let’s face it, without St Max we’ve got almost next to nothing. The endless lack of creativity from non entities Fraser, Almiron, Murphy and to a slightly lesser degree, Willock and Longstaff is so depressingly predictable every game.

Should have coped against B’Mouth and CP even without the injured list. No one played any through balls for Isak’s pace, just a procession of half hearted crosses at ridiculously easy heights for the their keeper and defence. First time I’ve felt really, really frustrated, with no sign of a plan B anywhere to be seen.

Certainly we need a Maddison, and I’d consider making Joel the DM in the short term anyway, to free up a place for a creative player.

Ledge I’ve no idea what Edwards is saying, I don’t follow his comments, but I’d expect decent spending in January.

I’d like to see Botman in favour of Burn aswell.

Someone else actually made the point how 8 points in 7 games if replicated through the season would be a relegation scrap so I dispelled that myth.

1 win in 7 game could also be read as 1 loss in 7 games. I’m not happy with the performance today but let’s gain a little perspective here.

Didn’t see all of the game but don’t think I missed much.

Trippier easily our best player today.

Midfield and wingers were pretty woeful, all of them. Joelinton has been pretty average the last 3 or 4 games. Willock is offering little too but we don’t have many options in the middle of the park, Anderson could start there possibly.

However I think Anderson should start out left with Fraser moving to the right, if Saint-Maximin isn’t back next game.

Botman for me should be starting. Pope, Trippier, Botman, Bruno and Isak are certain starters IMO, the rest are fighting for their places. Lewis maybe worth a start, Targett seems out of sorts since the injury.

Should be beating Bournemouth, need a win next game which won’t be easy at all. Mitrovic will have a point to prove.

The difference with Wilson up top over Isak is that Wilson will run the channels or into space for those long balls. He has unbelievable strength and more times than not he will win the ball and hold it up. We didn’t have that today and I don’t think Isak is the kind of striker to do that either. I’m sure he will be a big success but we have to change tact with different options

#77 OK what would you do above Eddie’s choice as Miggy at RW?

That’s what needs answered here. I have absolute faith in our managers decision making, which is the first time I can say that in years . So what’s your thoughts on who should be playing at RW above Eddie’s thinking? This will be interesting 😉

We need to be able to change to a plan B on the fly

Rotonda, Eddie isn’t known for heavy changes in games or plan B. That’s not a criticism. Although I wudnt call it a strength. He needs more creative players to balance his solid defence and strong possession stats. Jonjo was a loss today, but maxi a huge one.

I am just trying to balance out people saying we are close to 6th is all.

We pick up 8 points every 7 games. That’s about 43 points.

I dont think we will do that badly, just pointing it out.

Almiron always slowing attacks down to get on his left foot does my napper in.
Why on earth is he being continually played as a right winger?

Willock should be a winger with his pace, not a midfielder, he’s not a vision guy.

Not a bad shout trying willock on the right wing. Miggy has lost my confidence completely.. not like he needs it or cares mind.

Willock carries the ball and has a good cross. closes down well too.

I want miggy dropped. not a terrible sub either, better than murphy.

I feel sorry for some of these players, asked to do things they cannot do very well

Evidence of progression is there in abundance when teams come and park the bus I reckon.

Work to be done on the training ground and players to come back. Maxi would have dragged a couple of them out of position all game and opportunities would have been plentiful. We didn’t even have the chance to bring Anderson on today which was a shame.

Bit of Dan Ashworth wizardry in January wouldn’t go amiss.

Without ASM’s trickery and speed we are rather pedestrian in attack. The better teams can normally break down defensive opponents with accurate through balls. We lack that at the moment. We did strike the woodwork twice, but there either was no-one attacking the crosses, the crosses were too high/low or we didn’t get it in the mixer quickly enough in the final minutes.

Trippier was my MotM. Bruno is getting back to full fitness. Isak will come good in a counter-attacking side.
It was disappointing today, result-wise, but we are a work in progress.
It was unfortunate that Anderson could not play.
Almiron could be tried in the no 10 position, but he, Murphy, Longstaff and Fraser are not good enough for the project long term.

After the run we had from December to May and then spending 100 million in the summer and the subsequent results, Eddie needs a sudden improvement otherwise pressure is going to come from on top. These owners will not be impressed with these results and some decisions.
Why does a 12 million centre back keep out a 35? Was 63 million on Isak well spent?
They will have questions and want answers. They want continuous improvement just like Chelsea and city for their money. If you do not deliver you are out and you are not given much time. I think Eddie is a good manager but he may want more time than they will give him. Not filling the creative hole was a major blunder. I reckon he has the jan window to put that right. If we do not beat last season by a fair bit, his position will come under serious scrutiny
