Motivated Striker Still Has Time To Reach His Goal

Callum Wilson got off to an outstanding start this season with two world-class goals in the opening three matches. However, he was pulled in the second half of the Manchester City draw with a tight hamstring and hasn’t played since.

The initial prognosis from Eddie Howe was his striker would miss a couple of weeks. It has now been four weeks since Callum’s injury with his return not expected until after the international break.

If there is one positive to take from the injury, it happened while the transfer window was still open. That enabled Newcastle to bring in top striker target Alexander Isak from Real Sociedad for a world-record fee.

At the start of the season, Callum revealed his aim was to score enough goals to force his way back into the England reckoning. While this injury has made that goal more challenging, there are nine matches after today’s, including the Carabao Cup, for Wilson to give Gareth Southgate something to consider.

Howe stated during yesterday’s press conference that he wouldn’t count Wilson out just yet. This is what the head coach said as published in The Northern Echo:

“I never try to predict what will happen in the future and I’ll never write off Callum Wilson. His mindset is incredible. I don’t think his World Cup chance is gone and I don’t think Callum believes so either.

“Of course, I feel for him because he’s not in the squad and I feel for him because he’s been injured. But you have to look to the future and for Callum, you can’t sit there and dwell and go, ‘Poor me’.

“He’s not that type and I certainly wouldn’t encourage him to be that way. He’s had an unbelievable rise from non-league to the position he’s in, so I think he savors every moment rather than look at negative situations.

“It will just fuel his motivation and fire him even more so that when he returns, he shows how good he is. He will want to get back as quickly as possible and score goals.”

A fit and motivated Wilson would be perfect for Newcastle over the next few months. He’ll probably be out today but will hopefully return and be raring to go for Fulham on the 1st of October.

Munster – it’s more than that though, Americanisation also means that when something bad happens, it’s “the worst thing ever”. How are people supposed to understand the scale of things when so many people go straight for the extreme in order to get more attention/sympathy/consideration/power/coverage etc.

Personal bug bear of mine really and, as a linguist, I believe it to be a big problem when people are losing the ability to communicate in ways other then polar opposites.

Completely agree Ruddy at 32. To compare, if Bruce Springsteen died I’d be gutted and very sad, and music touches mist of us more than a monarch ever well. But a week and more after he died, I would not be in “deep mourning”, even if I’d always feel a twinge in the heart when j saw him singing “girls in their summer clothes” on u tube etc. Maybe we Irish mourn differently, but I don’t think so

    Gents,

There seems to be 2 fishing lines being cast into the dark murky waters hoping for a bite. Just ignore and we move along. Don’t take the bait

We know what’s right and what’s wrong at this moment in time. People have their opinion(s) and they’re welcome to them. At this time I will be skipping by them. 🙂

“Just because we in society encourage freedom of speech doesn’t mean it’s mandatory to speak!”

This typifies the issue. If your opinion is one of mourning, grief, sorrow or adulation for the monarch then you can express your opinion as much as you like. If, however, you hold a view that doesn’t subscribe to this view we would very much prefer it if you shut up.

Do you not see the problem with this perspective? How it’s unsettlingly authoritarian?

I think there’s a distinct possibility we’ll go nap today

The stars are aligning…I’m down in suffolk for the weekend and the stars last night as I lay doon with me last wharfedale blonde at 2 in the morning were an absolute delight…and a series of stars just got brighter and brighter until they formed 5 – 0!

Carltoon will go to Spain with a royal send off tomorrow.

Not sure if you’re referring to me as one of those fishing lines for daring to have an opinion that you, and others, subscribe to but there’s no attempt to “get a bite” on my part. It’s called having an opinion.

    TDS,

Cheers mate. I see you’re on holiday in turkey?

I have been to Ishmila in turkey hated it tbh. You’d just leave a restaurant and walk past the one next door and they would literally try and drag you in to that one knowing you’ve just eat. They would try and sell you anything. Mind I bought this lush Role for 100 Turkish lira it tells the right time twice a day. 😉

Most great teams over the years have very settled defences with largely the same personnel played over the season. I think that’s why Chelsea have struggled of late and Liverpool this season. So where does that leave Dan Burn, Targett is the better LB and you’d have to argue that Schar is the better CB, Botman hasn’t had €45M spent on him to watch from the bench. Does Howe chop and change the back line or leave Burn out?

Not at all Fenham. Myself Ruddy and TDS feel generally differently to you on this and personally I don’t understand how people can be in deep mourning a week after someone they don’t know personally has died. I’m not fishing, I’m expressing an opinion. You feel whatever way feels right to you, but I’m not sure what emotion goes beyond deep mourning, for when the people who really matter to us, pass away. Anyway, I’d better be getting moving here. Laters dudes.

As much as I love Burn I think his long-term role is as 3rd choice centre half or in a rotation when the fixtures pile up. He’ll get plenty of game time but the best pairing is Botman/Schar hands down. Burn will still have a big role to play and if we’re to get where we wanna go we need to have competition like this across the pitch.

The family are mourning a loved one and imo it was totally the wrong time, I don’t begrudge them their opinion but at least let them get through what is a very difficult time for them

She was certainly a VVIP, and I have no problem at all with the ceremony involved, but deary me, the media coverage has been way over the top. The monarchy, like the church, is in inexorable decline and losing significance at some steady pace in this modern secular world. Surely most UK and Commonwealth citizens have nowhere near the dedicated interest that the coverage would suggest, and I really saw no need to postpone football matches by the way, the people’s game. I can hardly think of anything less democratic than monarchy, but I will admit a soft spot for Queen Elizabeth the second. Toon fan you know. 😉

Burn is defo 3rd choice CB and second choice LB.

He’s just not quick enough and he gets drawn out of position far too easily and gets angry amd doesnt think straight. He has more negatives than positives…and I said as much as soon as we bought him.

    IMO

Policing when dissenting opinions can and cannot be allowed represents a very odd interpretation of “freedom of speech”

You, and others, clearly feel very passionately about the passing of the monarch and I respect that, I just merely don’t share your passion and think this demand that everyone subscribe to your singular view to be very unsettling.

That’s the way I see Burn and like Wood, probably knew that would be their role’s when the gears went in to motion. We’ve heard no complaints from Wood at all in his new role as official bench warmer either, he’ll get plenty game time in the cups and closing out games.

He’s a cracking 3rd choice CB mind you and has hardly put a foot wrong when played at CB so I can understand people’s disappointment if he loses out to Botman but dear Lord Botman is an absolute Rolls Royce of a centre half.

As a player Burn was a signing that was a little underwhelming but boy has he turned to be unbelievably great signing. Botman and Schar are our main first choice CB’s but with Lacelles stepping up to the plate recently and Burn. We have so much strength in depth at the back. LB is a bit of a worry if Trippier gets injured.
