Callum Wilson got off to an outstanding start this season with two world-class goals in the opening three matches. However, he was pulled in the second half of the Manchester City draw with a tight hamstring and hasn’t played since.
The initial prognosis from Eddie Howe was his striker would miss a couple of weeks. It has now been four weeks since Callum’s injury with his return not expected until after the international break.
If there is one positive to take from the injury, it happened while the transfer window was still open. That enabled Newcastle to bring in top striker target Alexander Isak from Real Sociedad for a world-record fee.
At the start of the season, Callum revealed his aim was to score enough goals to force his way back into the England reckoning. While this injury has made that goal more challenging, there are nine matches after today’s, including the Carabao Cup, for Wilson to give Gareth Southgate something to consider.
Howe stated during yesterday’s press conference that he wouldn’t count Wilson out just yet. This is what the head coach said as published in The Northern Echo:
“I never try to predict what will happen in the future and I’ll never write off Callum Wilson. His mindset is incredible. I don’t think his World Cup chance is gone and I don’t think Callum believes so either.
“Of course, I feel for him because he’s not in the squad and I feel for him because he’s been injured. But you have to look to the future and for Callum, you can’t sit there and dwell and go, ‘Poor me’.
“He’s not that type and I certainly wouldn’t encourage him to be that way. He’s had an unbelievable rise from non-league to the position he’s in, so I think he savors every moment rather than look at negative situations.
“It will just fuel his motivation and fire him even more so that when he returns, he shows how good he is. He will want to get back as quickly as possible and score goals.”
A fit and motivated Wilson would be perfect for Newcastle over the next few months. He’ll probably be out today but will hopefully return and be raring to go for Fulham on the 1st of October.

Time and a place mate, I don’t have an issue whether someone is a royalist or not, everyone to their own. I would and have defended both.
What I do have a problem with is the need to bump ones gums at an inappropriate time. If you can’t see that I can’t help you see it.
That’s me on the subject as I’m getting wound up.

Some of the daft pundits are questioning our season so far but other than not picking up as may points as I’d of thought by now we have started really well and performed at a high standard. We went toe to toe with the Champions and runners up even tho one of those games ended in heartache but that says more about how well we did than anything else.
Hopefully see Bruno back with his magic hat today

The fact you’re getting wound up about someone’s different opinion kind of proves my point. “By all means disagree with me, but please keep your mouth shut about it” is not something I’ve ever done in my life, and I won’t start now. I respect your feelings on the issue, and will show the passing monarch the respect she is owed. I am an Irish nationalist though so if you cannot see why I wouldn’t ever share your views on the monarchy then i cannot help you see.

Comment #88I’m still hoping for a 5-0 win and Bruno starting.
Don’t think it’s Eddie’s way to chuck them straight back in. Bruno is different gravy though, speed of thought and decision making. I hope he starts.

Comment #94I could end up crying into my pint and then if the barmaid asks me at what level of mourning I feel that I am at?…..well, that could just tip me over the edge and I’d end up drinking Carling.

Comment #102I liked the look of Nicky`s team to start today apart from Longstaff i would put either Anderson or Willock in front of him any day.
If Longstaff does start and once again doesn`t perform, against arguably the relegation favourites, then he should be benched indefinitely imo.
Bournemouth don`t have a strong CM so surely Longstaff should put in a good performance right?
I hope he proves me wrong but …..
