Newcastle Fail To Breach Bournemouth In Scoreless First Half

Newcastle struggled to break down Bournemouth in a scoreless first half. The Magpies had the bulk of possession but were left frustrated by the Cherries. The performance has been uncharacteristically flat but the lads did surge late.

The Magpies were set up in the customary 4-3-3 with Pope behind a back four Trippier, Schar, Burn, and Targett. Bruno returned to anchor the midfield with Willock and Joelinton pushing forward. Isak led the line with Almiron to his right and Fraser on his left.

Newcastle dominated possession from the onset, often camped out in the Bournemouth end. However, it was the visitors with the first shot. Ryan Christie’s dribbling effort from outside the box was easily collected by Pope.

Bournemouth should have went ahead in the 15th minute. Jordan Zemura’s lofted cross sailed over Burn and met the head of Marcus Tavernier. The former Magpie youth product’s header was tame and drifted wide of the far post.

Newcastle’s first shot came moments later. Isak and Almiron worked well together outside of the area resulting in a shot from the Paraguayan. His low effort wasn’t well-struck and the ball dribbled into Neto’s waiting hands.

A well-worked free-kick in the 20th minute produced Newcastle’s second shot on target. Trippier lofted the ball to the right side of the box and Schar flashed a header towards the far post. Neto was there for a comfortable save.

Newcastle hit the woodwork in the 26th minute. Bruno won a free kick from 25-yards out. Trippier stepped up and curled a beauty that struck the far post and goes beyond for a goal-kick.

Newcastle were unfortunate not to move ahead with a flurry of thwarted shots in the 42nd minute. After a corner, Joelinton was expertly found inside the box. The Brazilian’s quick effort was denied by the far post. Then Neto made superb stops on follow-up blasts from Joelinton and Fraser.

Gary O’Neil will be the happier of the two managers at the break. His side have defended well and frustrated Newcastle, who need to pick up the tempo and find ways to get Isak more involved in the game.

I don’t understand for the life of me how Eddie continues to use Almiron on the right. He is obviously highly intelligent, but this just seems beyond dumb.

This is bullshit, it really is. But we didn’t invest in creativity and this is what you get once injuries happen. Budget? FFP? Probably.

it seems like we have a great mentality of we wont lose games.

we also seem to have attitude that it is okay not to win. hence, all the draws.

Bournemouth are doing to us what we did to so many teams under Rafa, and when Bruce had that season with loads of luck, defenders scoring goals to pull Bruce out of it.

This was going to happen over time. Eventually Howe makes the side better, and weaker teams now fear us. So breaking teams down is completely new to this side.

Every team in the league fancied their chances against us under Bruce and Rafa as they knew they would have the ball.

Long story short, I’d rather have the new problem of breaking sides down, than the problem of being a cowardly side that accepts inferiority and tries to park the bus.

no way through bournemouth. we don’t have anyone who can unlock them.
great performance by bournemouth. came with a plan and executed it brilliantly.

shows how far we are away from being a top 10 side. our depth is laughable.

I agree, it was so obvious we needed a maddison or somebody like that.

If they want to finish 12th ish we are going to. They half-arsed the transfers imo.

Not sure what the plan is

Abysmal football, if we’re all being honest. Just abysmal. Lucky to get the penalty, otherwise we lose this game. Which is completely unacceptable – losing to relegation fodder at St. James. Zero wins since opening day….maybe we are the relegation fodder.

    My assessement:

    1 Good pressure
2 Good ability to bring the ball in the opponents last 30
3 Good ability to find space on the wings
    4 Poor Crossing
5 Poor short passing game arounf the box.
    6 Poor long range shooting.

Fenham, maybe re-read what I said. I didn’t call Eddie dumb, I actually said he is highly intelligent. I said the decision to keep Almiron on the right is dumb. Highly intelligent people can make dumb decisions at times.

    Gents,

Bournemouth have had a game plan and executed it well. We have missed Maximum and Wilson for sure. We’ve been so powder puff and toothless in the final third because of this.

The negative outpouring calling out Eddie is poor IMO. Bournemouth have done to us what we’ve done too so many teams over the past few years and done well. Not eddies fault.

without a couple of key players, our depth is terrible. we are a struggling side.
in january atleast 2-3 players needed to add strength in depth.

fraser & murphy wouldn’t even worry championship defenders nowadays.

This is no way Eddie’s fault. The players we have as cover just aren’t good enough; Almiron, Fraser, Willock, Longstaff, Murphy, Wood etc.

Hopefully in the next few windows those will be out the door and replaced with real top quality players.

on our day we can beat anybody.. but yeah. we need a full strength team and them to show up. that happens 5 times a season if you are lucky.

we are looking at 10th or lower
