Newcastle struggled to break down Bournemouth in a scoreless first half. The Magpies had the bulk of possession but were left frustrated by the Cherries. The performance has been uncharacteristically flat but the lads did surge late.
The Magpies were set up in the customary 4-3-3 with Pope behind a back four Trippier, Schar, Burn, and Targett. Bruno returned to anchor the midfield with Willock and Joelinton pushing forward. Isak led the line with Almiron to his right and Fraser on his left.
Newcastle dominated possession from the onset, often camped out in the Bournemouth end. However, it was the visitors with the first shot. Ryan Christie’s dribbling effort from outside the box was easily collected by Pope.
Bournemouth should have went ahead in the 15th minute. Jordan Zemura’s lofted cross sailed over Burn and met the head of Marcus Tavernier. The former Magpie youth product’s header was tame and drifted wide of the far post.
Newcastle’s first shot came moments later. Isak and Almiron worked well together outside of the area resulting in a shot from the Paraguayan. His low effort wasn’t well-struck and the ball dribbled into Neto’s waiting hands.
A well-worked free-kick in the 20th minute produced Newcastle’s second shot on target. Trippier lofted the ball to the right side of the box and Schar flashed a header towards the far post. Neto was there for a comfortable save.
Newcastle hit the woodwork in the 26th minute. Bruno won a free kick from 25-yards out. Trippier stepped up and curled a beauty that struck the far post and goes beyond for a goal-kick.
Newcastle were unfortunate not to move ahead with a flurry of thwarted shots in the 42nd minute. After a corner, Joelinton was expertly found inside the box. The Brazilian’s quick effort was denied by the far post. Then Neto made superb stops on follow-up blasts from Joelinton and Fraser.
Gary O’Neil will be the happier of the two managers at the break. His side have defended well and frustrated Newcastle, who need to pick up the tempo and find ways to get Isak more involved in the game.

It’s great that teams are coming to play counter attack but they have realized we have no creativity when teams sit back. Murphy and Almiron and Fraser and big Joe and Longstaff create nothing so we do not score unless it’s from a free kick or when Max and Callum play.
63 million for Isak looks a lot. 51 for Haaland? It’s ok saying he gets no service but for that much money I expect him to impose himself. Diaby or Maddison to help create chances might have been a better investment.
If you cannot brake down the worst defence you have a problem

Comment #171Paws on was supposed to be an upgrade. Nothing has changed from the referees.
But we still should have done better. Very disappointed today. Maybe the lads are training too hard? I just don’t know what excuse we can use today? Yes we have a couple of key players injured but we should still have enough to win.

Comment #173Terrible performance an yet another draw, we aren’t getting wins and its worrying, our strength in depth is absolutely piss poor and i said this multiple times during the transfer window, we are going to regret not signing more players.
Murphy Fraser Longstaff and willock are simply not good enough.
Drawing to Bournemouth at home is a pathetic result and simply no good enough.

We can’t win all the time take the positives out the negatives sometimes. There are no easy games in the EPL. I personally thought we’d roll these over however Bournemouth have stuck very well to a their game plan well. If any of those chances had gone in in the first half we would have rolled them over as they would have had to come out and play and would have exposed themselves then you would be praising Eddie and his team, how good they’re. That’s all I’m saying. But you did call out eddies decision making earlier as dumb. In Eddie we trust 😉

Comment #179Say what you like lads and lasses but that was an atrocious attacking display from us. Utterly clueless in the final third and needed a penalty to get anything from that. Some players are just not up to the task – Willock was abysmal, Fraser, Almiron and Murphy are just not the standard of player that will secure us top half football. Woefully missing the spark Maxi gives us and his absence really shows how dependent we are on him for creativity. Very disappointed, but it’s another point on the board.

teams are starting to play 10-0-0 against us and we have no clue what to do.
we have built our attack around pace, miggy, asm, fraser. when a team defends deep we are fcuked.
we need a new plan. but we dont have the players.
expect many more frustrating home games.

Comment #183Horrible today. One of the worst home performance. We are far away from top 10.
This team is a mid table outfit.
But 1 win in 7 is worrying and must be addressed or we will be looking the wrong way.

20 shots, 7 on target.
Dominated game, couldn’t unlock a dogged defence. Need to learn. Need skill and guile at close quarters. Without a number 10, playmaker we need ASM on the pitch to open up defences. Without him we don’t seem able to break through a massed defence.
Whole new ball game for us. 🙁

Comment #188All Howe had to do was get wood isak Joe in box and get players to load crosses in and high balls but just wasted time making useless passes back and forth. Again no plan b. No risks to win against Bournemouth a promoted team at home

Comment #190Disappointing result. But not as disappointing as a lot of the comments here afterwards.
The problem – against a well organised defence we are lacking creativity especially with our most creative player out injured.

Comment #191I wouldnt be hugely confident we might not get into a relegation scrap like most fans over the last few months have said.
i dont think we will be in danger but its not that hard to get sucked in to the bottom. A couple of defeats and we are in it.
We cannot score in open play. Which means it is very difficult to win games.

Two big points lost.Should be murdering teams like this but on the break they looked the more likely to score. Plenty of possession but no creativity nor penetration. Never looked liked scoring from open play. Murphy, Longstaff and Wood are hardly game changers. Bench very weak as we knew it would be.
Badly need ASM and Wilson back and quick.
Burn is hardly a Botman!

Comment #196Lots of people giving it “Newcastle need to get used to this, teams sitting back and parking the bus”. No, Newcastle are toothless in attack, devoid of quality, lacking in ideas, and everyone has known it since January. This is the same Bournemouth with the same tactics that Liverpool spanked 9-0. And we needed a penalty to rescue a draw! Let’s not mince our words; Newcastle were absolutely sh*te, and have been all season.

Comment #198Dear me,. Howay lads, calm it down. Remember how we started last season and how we ended up finishing?. There are posters going on as if we are on a downward spiral. Giver ower,. Let’s see how the rest of the season pans out eh?. I appreciate we’ve only won once this season but remember,. We should have at least another 5-7 points if it weren’t for VAR.
See how we played against Man City and Liverpool. We should have beaten them both if it were not for very dodgy decisions. We seem to struggle against teams that defend in numbers as we didn’t have the cutting edge to break them down today. Luck wasn’t on our side also, if it was we would be high fiving as it’s a game of fine margins. But we really missed Wilson and maximum today and it would have been a different story as they would have been the difference to break this resolute team down. We need a Madison in January that’s for sure.
Keep the faith ladies and gentlemen. Today was a blip not a tragedy as so many are alluding to on here. Don’t forget where we’ve came in such a period of time.
In Eddie we trust we will be fine, and the team will take a lessons learned from today, it’s what we do we come back stronger. Keep the faith

Comment #199We are a counter attacking team which needs space behind to run into. When denied the space we are clueless.
Man City play against massed defences most games and destroy them because they have players with close control who can turn quickly and play in tight triangles. If we cannot play the ball behind then we are useless.
Isak is a counter attacker. Pure and simple. No impact against blanket defence. But I think he has a shot on him
