VIDEO – Eddie Howe Post Match Interview – “There Was Something Missing Today”

Eddie Howe has admitted that Newcastle were not at their best today in the 1-1 home draw against his former club, Bournemouth.

We have to try to pick up wins against clubs not in the top six and especially at home, and we again failed to do so.

The Newcastle manager has admitted there was something missing today.

Our next game is at Fulham in two weeks time after the International break.

The London club have a team in form, having won 3-2 at Nottingham Forest yesterday, and they are currently in 6th place in the Premier League with 11 points.

3 points more than Newcastle.

Can’t say I’m eager to watch motd tonight.

Its a pity we didn’t get Madison or Paqueta. Either would have helped us to 3 points today. I think Pedro would have been a huge improvement on Fraser. I don’t know why we didn’t go for them, but it’s obvious that there was a budget, and signing Isak, an unexpected move, cleared out the funds for the summer. Im not sure what the purpose was of not buying Pedro, but it looks financial, contrary to what some people thought. We need guys like that, and if Eddie thinks that keeping guys like Fraser, Murphy, Dummett is good for morale, then he’s clearly putting morale ahead of quality of the pitch, which is foolish. You can build morale, but you won’t build Fraser etc into much more than what they are currently.

    Always appreciate your report card.

Seems a fair assessment today. Question for you: You give a rating for all the players and the ref but not sure if you give one to the manager very often. What would you have scored Howe today? I know with all the injuries to our attacking players that we didn’t have a lot of options. I do think that he should have tried Wood about 10 minutes earlier. I don’t have a lot of faith in him but we needed a physical presence in the area with their 5 at the back.

However, today, our wingers were woeful in the attacking third. Fraser was non-existent except for the good shot that was saved. And very few good crosses for anyone to really attack so Wood may not have made any difference. But maybe we could have had the wings switch sides to change things up?

Unfortunately 2 points dropped but not a disaster. Just now we are victims of our own new expectations. But winless in 6 is not great form. I’m not worried over the course of 38 games but we do need to get some more wins on the board.

Onwards to Fulham. 2 weeks is so long to wait. HWTL!

Also when Wood did come on I did not like that Isak then drifted too wide to the left and didn’t play off Wood as a pair of strikers.

I think we have to treat this season as a sort of “free hit” sort of season in that there isn’t immediate pressure to push for Europe and we have yet to secure a big commercial deal which can enable a squad overhaul so we’re having to make do with a relatively limited squad this season (until January at least)

I share your concerns about our transfer business this summer and think we should have added at least two more bodies, with Pedro and Maddison my preferences and we’d have been infinitely better with those two additions. For whatever reason though we didn’t get them but one person I’m not going to blame Howe for it.

Toonces we need to improve and fast. Bruno won’t be hanging around much more than a year if we get 10th unless we are hugely unlucky to get mid table. We need to be getting 8th or better ideally and a cup run or two.

We need to improve indeed but it isn’t about only Bruno.

8th – 10th is what I expect this season and pushing for Europe next one.

    Merit marks for Howe 6-7
Didn’t have much option on the bench
But would of started with Botman instead of Burn – better passer of the can open up defence with passes and seems to be better in the air in offensive role ie corners
As other person have noted would of tried Almiron down the right for something different and got last 15 tried the long ball into box
Subs if Bruno wasn’t tired brought Longstaff on for Willock and pushed Bruno forward
Murphy don’t rate rather of seen Ritchie

Shame Anderson had a niggle and missed the game, not saying the result would have been different but he’d have been effective off the bench for 30mins. He’s shown more in his sub appearances than Willock, Murphy, Fraser have so far this season, he’s looked better than Almiron and Longstaff too.

Murphy impressed me at times last season, seemed direct and quite confident, albeit he tried to shoot a lot when sometimes a pass was a much better option. He’s gone backwards this season, probably time to move him on.

Willock has never hit the heights of the loan move, although he set the bar a bit too high, he’s only shown glimpses of that player since, a deeper role may not have helped.

It’ll take another 3, 4 maybe 5 windows for the squad to really take shape so patience is needed. If we can move on the likes of Ritchie and Murphy in Jan, and bring in two quality players then we’ll push on again.

Not really a fan of his but we miss Shelvey, he can be lazy and frustrating but the side is better with him in it at the moment, plus it means Bruno can move to the right of the midfield trio with Willock then becoming a fairly useful sub off the bench.

Saint-Maximin being back in the side will give us a lift too.

We did slightly over achieve with last seasons second half of season form. They say the table doesn’t lie, we got a very lucky point at Brighton, should prob have had 3 vs Palace, didn’t deserve to lose to Liverpool. So, so far I think we are 2-3 points less than we deserve to be.

Plus let’s not forget we gave last seasons runaway top 2 both a game, especially City, which shows what we are capable of. It’s these Bournemouth, Fulham, Brentford games we need to be turning draws into wins in if we are serious about being a top 10, top 8 side.

Look at the absolute chaos Forest have created at their place with all their signings, we’ve made 8 major signings in two windows, it’s going to take time and patience.

Jane, I think Isak can play with Wilson. He looks good coming in at an angle from right or left. He’s not a target man but he could feed off one/twos with Wilson.

    snowdone,
That’s why the search for a striker was so difficult, we already have an outright centre forward, well two actually if you include Wood. They’ve been in the market for a striker that can play on his own, as Isak clearly showed he can against Liverpool or alongside a target man, which obviously didn’t go too well today but as he’s not an outright CF, like Etikite, I think that’s why they’ve gone after a forward like him.

I to believe Isak will play alongside Wilson when he is fit. May take a few games to bed in and get the understanding, but there is huge potential there. A front 3 of Maximum, Wilson, Isak would be lethal in time.

A few points to take from game and comments on here today.
1 Stop blaming Isak, lad has only played 3 games and scored 2 goals which is the same as Wood managed in 18.last season. With better quality around him comes a better player ( something you couldn’t say about Wood).
2 We are going to struggle until we have a first team and subs bench that are all top quality players.
3 No ASM, Botman, Wilson and a not 100% Bruno is going to affect us.
4 Did say a few weeks ago that I hope a poor squad wouldn’t be the start of a pile on, on Eddie and it’s starting to happen.
5 The biggest worry for me is PIF, they are an investment fund and if that investment sees its investment not reaching its potential then they will act and despite what we all feel for Eddie then there’s f all we can do about it.
6 Should have had 2 strikers in, Isak and another (would have taken Pedro) as in the summer I said Wilson struggles with injuries and it’s only going to get worse. Wood is just not good enough or we would never have gone out and got Isak.
6 The crowd booing at the end shouldn’t be condemned, they pay to watch us and it just wasn’t good enough today and their reaction at the end is a better judge of the game than the one on here.

Pick a dynamic midfielder and two wingers from our past teams and put them in this current team.

    You choose.
But that would have the makings if a top seven team

Fenham, appreciate your response. Don’t agree with everything you’ve said. The point of bringing up EA was that he was available in previous games, and still we stuck with Almiron.

I am on board with everything Eddie has accomplished. It doesn’t mean we can’t question his decisions. I really feel in watching every game that Almiron is a detriment to our attacking play. He consistently gives the defense the opportunity to recover. He’s not direct. His only purpose is to get the ball to his left foot, regardless of what is happening around him. At one point today, he managed to get the ball to his left foot, had space all along the top of the box, and “unleashed” a scuffed weak shot.

He’s a net negative in my opinion. What he provides in running and covering doesn’t make up for the way he kills attacking moves. He is also absolutely no threat to score a goal.

    Evening Folks

I can see a lot of fans are disappointed and disillusioned with todays result and performance, keep the faith fellow fans as we have only started this journey and make no mistake there will be a few more bumps in the road before we reach our final destination. The simple fact and reality is we don`t possess a strong enough squad to deal with any serious or major injuries, that will take time possibly another 3 or 4 transfer windows unfortunately, in the meantime just enjoy and savour every moment of this special journey, and don`t lose track of where we were just this time last year HWTL

While I was extremely disappointed with the result today, because we have the quality to win, I have to agree with many other posters that we just need to be patient. Those who want Ed’s head don’t have an appreciation or understanding of what’s going on with our team since he took over. I think MC have had 12/14 years to get to where they are Eddie hasn’t even had a full season. Wait until all of our players are back from injury before pointing fingers.
