Defender Sets Realistic Expectations For Transitional Campaign

Eddie Howe prefers the experience of Dan Burn over Sven Botman for now. The head coach handed the Geordie the start over the summer signing for the Bournemouth draw at St. James’ Park. It was his 23rd straight league appearance for his hometown club.

After the match, Howe confirmed Burn was ahead of the young Dutchman in the pecking order. Burn’s experience has won the day for the time being, though Botman will be one of the future stars to keep this club moving forward.

While the future is bright, there will be growing changes. Two straight draws at home without a goal from open play is a testament to that. Newcastle are still in the infancy (well maybe toddler) stage of their resurrection.

The hopes among the faithful was a push into Europe next season. Those hopes have taken a hit with just one win so far this season. Though Saturday’s win put Newcastle in the top ten which is the conservative aim for this campaign.

Dan Burn spoke about the Bournemouth draw and putting expectations into perspective. This is what he defender as published in The Northern Echo:

“It was hard to break them down when they put everyone behind the ball, and we will come across that a lot this season. Teams are trying to take the sting out of it and dampen the crowd down – it feels like two points lost.

“It’s a change of mentality, and we have to find ways of breaking them down. We need to string a run together. Not getting beaten is good mentality-wise, but we might look back (with regret) at the end of the season at these games when we could have picked up more points.

“Is it a reality check? Maybe a little bit. As a fanbase, we are like that anyway. We always get ahead of ourselves. It has been like that since I was a kid.

“We have to be realistic with the way we look at the takeover and how we are building our squad. Realistically, we should still have targets in our head. Europe is pushing it a bit, but we should be pushing top ten, comfortably. Hopefully, we can reset after the international break.”

The aim should be for a European place this season. However, a comfortable top ten finish will be a very respectable finish. The club have to aim high but not get too distressed if the mark is missed.

The progress over the past 11 months has been remarkable. There will be moments when things don’t go to plan. The fact there is a plan for success is worlds apart from where this club was this time last year.

I don’t expect a lot of business to be done in January, I think Amanda is on record saying that the winter window is notoriously difficult……obviously the last one was different for obvious reasons.

To me a brilliant season would be 7th and we’re 2 points off it.

Anything less than 10th would be disappointing.

A lot of players didn’t want to move because of World Cup. So in Jan more players will be open to moving

I think one player in January. Either a winger or a creative/attacking midfielder. Either one would dramatically improve us.

A Maddison or a Diaby wouldn’t be disastrous.

Mund yeah, not a focal point like Wood. Lad can score goals we know that but just seems to be playing the wrong position or his attitude isn’t right, just something not clicking with him.

Maddison would be great…he’s a proper player

I think that would work well mate.

I personally think it’s down to his position as he is saying all the right things so don’t think there is an underlining issue just not been used in the right way. He loves his bursts forward and supporting the attack so a false 9 could work really well for him.

    Have a good day pal

It’s weird, I had no problem with Scorer being on the blog as an alt until he started acting up. If other people do have alts on here, I’m only personally bothered if they cause problems. Otherwise, I’ll leave it to admin to sort out. I bet there are a few alts on here still…

No I agree. Was just meaning a player like that. Not sure what the clubs intentions are in the market. Not sure if the ffp thing is there as a decoy and there’s plenty money available or if we are at our limit now.

    Ny mag

I’ve only seen him twice but basing my opinion on his stats and reputation. Still think he’s out of our league atm though.

    Maxi isn’t consistent, us he?
In fact, the one place he is, is… play a few, injured a few. Blinder/stinker!

    TDS,

I don’t understand, you’re saying that scorer was Fenham (I have no idea if that’s actually true)…..but even if it was that’s not an alt.

Surely an alt is two people at the same time?

One thing I’ve not seen us capitalising on is what Amanda said a while back. That we’ll have to be shrewd and look at players with contracts expiring.

There’s been quite a lot of frees or really low fees lately and we weren’t in for any of them. Jesus, Kamara, Sule, Ginter off the top of my head.

All of these would have improved us.

    Harley,
You only have to look at players that are turning down Spurs and Man United for Liverpool to show how tough it is to attract the best players. Ashworth will be worth every penny.

Astronomical wages and also being at the very beginning of our journey to greatness

Kamara for example went to Villa as i believed they offered wages we would not match or go anywhere near for him

It will take a couple of seasons for us to confidently get our targets but for now they will need a little more convincing and no way will we offer huge wages just to get our man. That clearly isn’t our way and good on them as it’s a slippery slope and will only hurt us in the long run.

Isnt Alt short for alternative? In computer gaming its used as a term for any other characters that you have on your account that arent your main.

NY – an alt is an alternative account created by someone with an existing account typically for some kind of benefit that they can’t achieve with their main account. Typical uses are to circumvent a ban, behave in a different way, reinforce/benefit their main account in some way or attack someone else from an anonymous standpoint.

Simply changing the name of your account is not creating an alt as it’s the same account and all previous posts will reflect the name change.

The beauty of us attracting players like Mahrez, Kante, Chillwell or a Cucarella the way Brighton and Leicester have, is we don’t have to sell them, the only way Bruno or Maxi are leaving is if they put in a transfer request.

I think Rodgers will be gone this break and depending on where Leicester are in the league will decide what they do with Maddison. It’s weird how they were once the shining example of how to run a football club, now they look like a shambles

Pointless having Isak if you don`t play to his strengths and give him the ball where he is most threatening, it never happened on Saturday, Howe needs to address that.
