Widely considered one of Newcastle’s top targets for January, James Maddison could be at a crossroads with Leicester City. The playmaker was the subject of two rejected bids from Newcastle over the summer. When the winter window rolls around, he’ll be entering the final 18 months of his current deal.
That is the hope, at least, from the Magpies’ perspective. The Athletic has published comments from Foxes boss Brendan Rodgers confirming new contract talks have begun with the 25-year-old playmaker, whose ability to unlock defenses was in short supply in Newcastle’s draw at Bournemouth on Saturday.
After confirming Maddison’s agent has held talks with the Leicester brass on ‘numerous occasions, Brendan added:
“I’m pretty sure the club would want to do that. With James, with two years left, naturally the club would want to protect the asset. But it works both ways.
“If a player — not saying James — doesn’t want to sign it, then it can be a stalemate. Both sides have to be able to find an agreement.
“But absolutely, he’s an outstanding player and of course, Leicester City would benefit from keeping him longer.
“He’s been brilliant. He’s a top-class player. He’s improving, developing, and happy. Of course, he’s a top player at the level, so people will be interested in him, but I’ve seen no change in him whatsoever.”
Leicester have yet to taste victory in the league in what has been a woeful start to this campaign; one to rival Newcastle’s from last year. It even took a penalty shootout for them to get past Stockton in the Carabao Cub.
The Foxes are coming off a 6-2 defeat at Tottenham, though played very well in the first half. They sit last in the league with their manager’s future in serious doubt. This will all impact whether Maddison signs a new deal or waits to see what January may bring.

Comment #247Jedi I would say ignoring things does not make them untrue. If you want to ignore all the years at Bournemouth because it does not suit you argument go ahead. It does not make the point go away though.
But you also did not answer my first question: do we play the same way this season as we did last season?
I didn’t say that we have seen all Howes idea’s at Newcastle I just know he will have a plan B, C, D, E F. Also, some changes are subtle, you don’t always have to change formation, or start hoofing long balls to a big man up top to make tactical adjustments on the pitch.

Comment #252To anyone questioning what howes plan B is, tell me what you think it should be…with the starters we have and who’s on the bench what would you do? Bring in longstaff, Murphy, Fraser, wood? They’re all shite. Who else is there? We’ve got some good defenders but when you’re chasing a game are you gonna bring in botman or lascelles? Nope. So who are you gonna bring in that changes a game? Nobody…
Maybe when ASM and Wilson come back you can have an argument on 433/4231 or 442 with isak either on the wing or a 10 in the former or 2 strikers in the latter. but until that happens that’s literally the only tactical changes howe has at his disposal.

Comment #255Eddie will fix everything I’m sure, he has some tough decisions to make this year.
I would keep Wilson but only if we get another striker, Wilson to be used sparingly for the clubs benefit hopefully keeping him available.
Wood can go to a team in the championship but only if we get another striker.
Willock confuses me, memory not good but didn’t he played more as number 10 when he was on loan with us, maybe with Jonjo back he can be deployed like that again.
Miggy I feel a little sorry for, he plays his heart out for the badge, but I’m sure right wing is not his preferred position.
I’m praying Maxi is back for Fulham and Mitro forgets where the net is.

Comment #256Let’s remember Bruno was just coming back from injury and we had ASM and Wilson out. Isak is just getting used to a new league too. Taking this into consideration it is going to be very difficult for us to beat teams who play a low block against us. Man City and Liverpool are used to it and have a billion pounds worth of players. Having said that teams like Leicester have shown a lower spending team can do well playing an attacking system, so when we have all our options we should be to dispatch a team like Bournemouth at home.

Comment #257If teams play a low block, it’s players like ASM and Anderson we will rely on to create magic and open up a packed box. Fraser and Almiron are more counter attacking types who can run into space. I’d like to see Longstaff and Joelinton take the defensive duties and push Bruno up as he can also unlock teams. Willock’s main talent seems to be making bursting runs from midfield into the box and scoring which he doesn’t do anymore. Again this is a player better suited to counter attack so bring in Longstaff as a water carrier and unshackle Bruno.
Another option for a low block, if desperate, is to pump the long ball to Wood and get our attackers surrounding him, but I didn’t even realise he’d came on against Bournemouth although I was tipsy by the end. If we go for that he’s going to have to be a lot more aggressive like Carrol was and by a thorn in their side elbowing and what not and just being a horrible menace. He’s been surprisingly meek so far.

Comment #258It’s frightening when you look at our bench and see how championship it it is, then realise they were the better players about a year ago, and the worst ones are on loan or sold. But without the Saudis we’d probably be playing them all. We’d possibly have no Targett, Trippier, Bruno, Isak, Botman, Pope, Wood or Burn. Joelinton would still be awful and Schaar would still be 5th choice or would have left. With so few to sell, and an chairman unwilling to use his own money, we’d have probably targeted all the free transfers by paying way over the odds on wages for 30 year olds who just crumble as soon as they get their deal, and the rest would be loans. Maxi is the only player who would have raised over 10 million. Oh and there’s no way we’d have stayed up just to compound the problems. We’d be down there paying huge wages to old players who are succumbing to injuries like Wilson and Shelvey. We’d be doing worse than Sunderland I’d imagine. With all that in mind, I’m as happy as a pig in sh*t about our current form.

Comment #259Looks like we were scouting Ansgar Knauff of Eintracht Frankfurt last week.
In the game against Marseille he was involved in eleven duels and won 55 percent, high speed 34.67 km/h.) and willingness to learn. Glasner (coach) used him in three different positions (right and left wing, right defender) within a very short time.
Any thoughts? He’s only 20.

Comment #260Isak will have to play, given his fee, which of course is comfortably a record for us, but where, when Wilson is fit?
Perhaps in behind, like King at Bournemouth, in a 4 2 3 1, but more likely on the right in place of Miggy, although I believe he’s happier on the left.
Regardless, he surely won’t be left out once Wilson returns.

FA Cup replays scrapped in 3rd/4th round, League Cup either scrapped or elite clubs field U-21 sides & parachute payments reduced as part of Premier League ‘New Deal’ which will allow elite to play more matches in Europe/Asia/US etc.
https://www.thetimes.co.uk/article/premier-league-clubs-consider-plans-to-scrap-fa-cup-replays-and-revamp-league-cup-f2sknw6rx?shareToken=8949841cf7208eba53eb21d564b9e17a
Also, introduction of a ‘soft’ wage cap (including transfer & agent fees) set as a % of income. This will bake in existing gaps within the Premier League and make it difficult for clubs with new owners such as Newcastle to challenge the existing elite.

Wilson will only be back for 2 games so I wouldn’t worry. With Wilson’s fitness it might just be best to use him as a sub, then he might stay fit all year. Although he’d still have to do training so probably get injured there.

Comment #274Whenever people refer to the disallowed goal from Isak against Liverpool, why do they blame VAR? The goal was disallowed by the ref’s assistant who flagged for offside, VAR just didn’t overrule his decision.
Anyone who is saying that VAR proves 100% that Isak was onside and there’s no angle showing him offside needs to go to Specsavers.
VAR screwed us once, against Palace. That’s it. I don’t even think it’s been used to change an on-field decision against us apart from that blatant goal.

Comment #275I think Eddie Howe needs the first half of this season to be convinced in his own mind that Miggy, Longstaff , Fraser , Murphy and Willock are not good enough to help take the club to the next level.
Despite what they may have shown him in training and pre season , and despite his ability to improve players, these lads are just not up to it in the cut and thrust of the PL or against packed defences.

Var not intervening, when it shoulda, is, in fact, var getting it wrong, also, is it not.
But, i think most are saying that those who run var are the problem, hence var.
