A new claim has emerged on Newcastle’s interest in Roma center-back Roger Ibanez. The Brazilian was initially linked earlier in the summer with reports that an approach was made.
Sport Witness has a new report backing that initial claim. It states that both Newcastle and Tottenham made inquiries for Ibanez. Roma were not willing to come down from his almost £70m release clause.
At the time, Newcastle were in pursuit of Sven Botman, who soon joined from Lille. What is interesting about Ibanez is that he is right-footed and could be seen as a potential replacement for Fabian Schar.
Ibanez joined Roma, initially on a year-and-a-half loan, from Atalanta in January 2020. His stay was made permanent in the summer of 2021 for the bargain fee of £8m. The 23-year-old has been a mainstay in the side with 110 appearances since his arrival.
Newcastle are continually being linked with talent from Brazil with Monaco’s Vanderson being linked recently. Ibanez arrived in Italy from Fluminense joining Atalanta in 2019. It didn’t work out in Bergamo but he has thrived under Jose Mourinho in Rome.
Ibanez fits the bill as a young ball-playing defender. While Mourinho deploys three center-backs, Ibanez anchors the backline and has earned a call-up to the Brazil national team for this week. He could be one to watch in the coming transfer windows.
