Despite being very pleased with Newcastle’s summer business, Eddie Howe was keen on adding more faces to his squad in the final days of the window. There was a last-ditch attempt to bring in West Ham’s right-back Harrison Ashby on deadline day as cover for the injured Emil Krafth.
The loan market was also scoured with Howe admitting domestic clubs were reluctant to do business with the rising Magpies. Here is what Howe said after the window closed:
“We are against everyone else. Domestic clubs didn’t want to be seen to be helping us.
“We’ll have to take that, that is part of where we are at the moment. I think we have certainly found there is no one there, ready to do us a favor.
“It’s the narrative regarding us that has changed. I think if there is anything domestically teams will put their price up if it is Newcastle.
“That is the same around the world, that is something we are having to deal with.
“That is why we have walked away from a few deals because I think it is important we are not seen as that club that will pay what is asked. I think it has to be fair.”
Fabrizio Romano has named Christian Pulisic as one of the domestic players Howe was keen on bringing in on loan. However, the move was blocked by new Chelsea owner Todd Boehly.
This is what the transfer guru told the Que Golazo podcast (which can be seen below):
“Strong interest from Newcastle. Newcastle were obsessed with Christian. They wanted him. But they wanted him on loan and not on a permanent deal. They wanted him on loan, maybe with a buy option, not mandatory. And this is why Chelsea decided to say no.”
Pulisic was forced to remain at Stamford Bridge but was reportedly furious at potential moves being blocked. With Thomas Tuchel recently being sacked, the American may find more opportunities under new manager Graham Potter.
If not, Pulisic may be targeted in the January window. A loan with an option to buy could be beneficial for both parties. The 24-year-old was just a late substitute in Potter’s debut, a 1-1 draw at home to RB Salzburg in the Champions League.

Comment #42I’ve not said Howe isnt doing a good job…he’s doing a great job…but he’s not been given the players to get us where we need to be at the end if this year.
You’ve asked everyone on here where you think we’ll finish…but where do you think the owners want us to finish?
We were played by all the other Prem clubs during the window and the owners now know it.
If they dont put that right in january, we will finish no where near a european slot.

Comment #43Fook what the journalist’s think. Personally I couldn’t give a damn what they say. Maybe they’re happy we are not going gung ho therefore happy we are kept in our place and not really challenging like they thought we were going to. Hence the out cry…
On the flip side we are playing a blinder keeping them quiet as we rise to prominence stealth like 😉

Comment #46Hence why the blog is so quiet.
No great football to talk about and a squad thats not going to deliver anytime soon due to our best players being injured.
Its not great and the blame lies squarely with the owners.
Howe is doing a great job…the owners not so great IMO

Comment #47Sparky I agree with you we should have signed more but Howe wanted I guess to give players who helped keep us up a chance. However come January I want Howe to be ruthless because it is 100% absolute that certain players wont progress us any further. Murphy, Wood, Ritchie, Fraser, Longstaff all need replacing starting in January and through to Summer

I hear what you’re saying I really do, and I have the utmost respect for you as a poster. But IMO our owners are like a breath of fresh air to what we’ve had to endure for the past horrendous 14 years.
We must appreciate what they’ve done for us in such a short space of time. (Not even a year yet) The foundations of any sky scraper is the main reason why they can be robustly built so high and solid. They (the owners) have completed those foundations with aplomb by placing each jigsaw piece together bit by bit. I keep referencing what Mehdad said at the very beginning of our amazing TO on October 7th 2021. “Please have patience”
is what he said and for a reason and that is what we need to be…
The owners are clearly getting mugged off left right and centre with other clubs trying to rinse us with the high overflated prices they’re quoting.
They cannot be seen to pander to such tactics as it will ensure we are treat the same by every club we deal with. however we’ve had to buckle at times and had to take the bait with Wood 25mil as they were desperate to avoid relegation. Isak maybe slightly over priced, because of Wilson’s injury woes. Botman, he is going to be a superstar in time and we’ve hunted him for 6 months his price was spot on and in time will be proved IMO.
Let’s see what January brings, I think there will be movement where 2 good signings will be had one being Maddison, the other a winger if some sort. It’s like a game of poker who blinks first and Dan Ashworth are working on a professional level… I do think our owners are making it abundantly clear they’re not to be mucked about with the re the amounts they’re going to pay for a player. They are potentially staying within FFP regs also?
Our owners have built a back born and a very important infrastructure to take us forward. We are most definitely staying ahead of the curve and dong it the right way in my humble opinion. But I also appreciate your opinion too. We may need Lord Scattercash, brought in as that last piece of the jigsaw.
We are doing well, and our owners have been staggering in what they’re doing and what they have planned.
Onwards and upwards.

Sadly Darnik and Shola got arrested for trying to steal trophies from the Stadium of Shite.
Police report: A burglary was recently committed at Sunderland’s ground and the entire contents of the trophy room were stolen. The police have caught two men with a red carpet.

Comment #50Honestly Sparky, I’m convinced one will step up and treat us with some respect.
My thinking is, loan deal with option to buy making us better against the other five hopefully taking points of them giving them better chance of premier title but loan player cannot play against loaner club.
It’s a smart move for what ever club does it.

Comment #59Sparky, imo owners are doing a great job, given the mess they walked into.
2 caveats however.
I think Eddie may need to become more ruthless in purchasing, and realise that a squad can be rebuilt and still keep its internal strong bonds.
Secondly, I think we didn’t push the ticket because Isak stymied us from a budget and FFP point of view, particularly from a budget perspective. I agree that we could have pushed harder, and think it was an error not to purchase Pedro and it has showed up recently.
Mind you it showed us that some social media ITKs go to market with news prematurely, as some of us said.
As I said earlier, we are a far cry from the early nonsense about soon to happen world domination that some dreamers gobbed on about.
Much patience will be needed, and the next two windows, especially the summer, could be seriously transformative.

Just catching up….
I think our club have deliberately stuck to their principles re not over paying in this window as a marker for other clubs, that we won’t be taken for fools.
My only concern is until we get those players we need to elevate us up the league, to be in the top 4 area, where better players will want to be (and asking for transfers to us potentially), well we might need to overpay.
It’s a difficult one but if we are only talking a few million to get the right player….
January will be interesting as some of our targets are 6 months further into their contracts, we just need to be further up the league to show we are going to be a team on the rise.
I think we will be top 6 by January, as long as we don’t suffer serious injuries!

Comment #69It baffles me why some think after 7 games they can judge the season.
Really….????
Howay ffs man we were in November and December and we had a good few saying we would be relegated and even then I said it was madness to say with so much of the season to be played….
We all know how that ended with us finishing in top 4 form and 11th in the table. We were closer to Europe than we were the relegation zone and some still thought we were in a relegation battle.
We are 7 games in ffs!
A few good results and we could be well placed in a European spot.
Lots sound like they want it NOW! NOW! NOW!
Don’t forget were we came from lads and lasses and judge a season on a season not 7 games.

Comment #70I know what I predicted in martoons game was a little optimistic bordering on the lines of unrealistic. However I think in comparison to the last 20 or so seasons those predictions are probaly more likely than if they were in the previous seasons. Obviously we are not going to win the league this season. And the Geordie maradona probably isn’t going to score 42 goals. But the mood has shifted so that we as a fan base can believe again.
And not a Yuri Geller in sight.

Comment #71The way I see it are the only ones disappointed in the season and the recruitment so far are the ones thinking we should be aiming for the top six now now now. Dan Burn couldn’t have made it more clear what the players expectations are, and I imagine they mirror the owners and managers. We’ve spent nearly £200M in 9 months, the club have been completely transformed, we’ve hired on of the games top DoF’s and arguably the world’s best CEO in Darren Eales. You can’t just turn a team that has battled relegation for the last six years in to a team that can compete both in Europe and the PL in just two transfer windows. I just don’t get this new found entitlement, we are putting all the pieces in place to make a solid foundation.

Comment #73The squad is threadbare, the Tranmere game showed us exactly what type of team we’d have to be fielding if we were competing in Europe to soon. Adding Maddison or Paqueta in the summer gone wouldn’t have changed that. The fact we had to give a player away shows the job the owners have got. You simply can’t pay off ten players and go and buy ten of Bruno’s quality in one or two summers.

Comment #74I think, depending on injuries and January recruitment, we have a chance to be competing for the Europa Conference League place come the end of the season. If we can get a few wins on the board between here and the world cup we be well placed to attack the league come January. With only a few of our senior players attending the competition our squad should be raring to go.
Even if we don’t qualify for Europe at the end of this season I would still class it as a success if we were competing for that spot.
Still I’ll just be happy to watch how everything pans out for us.

Comment #75Myund ~21 I was at the QPR game, played in a strong wind an a 1G pitch. Ball would bounce so high it was unbelievable. 4-0 at half time, I turned to my friend , A QPR season ticket holder and said, I bet we get beat. It was like playing down a 1 in 10 slope. You could hardly get the ball out of your half against the wind.

I don’t think they would avoid Europe by any means and if we got there then so be it, not sure how they would deal with it if we did though. You only have to look at Leicester and West Ham to show how a sustained campaign on those Thursday nights affects your league form. In my opinion I think the owners/management are well aware of that and are slowly building a squad capable of competing on both fronts.

I think they’d recruit heavily if they wanted to make a good fist of it in our first season back.
Personally, I don’t think we need to enter Europe and then win it. So it could still be part of the progressive build, blood in some youngsters etc. Even if we didn’t make the knock out stages in our first season back it would still be good to be back in those competitions. We can go on to really attack and compete when our depth is at the required level.

Aye, it’s a tricky one, the players will want to finish as high as possible, that goes without saying, but there was fans saying the owners will look at Howe and say “we expect more from our £200M” it has clearly been proved that is not the case. Tenth would of course be disappointing but I think all involved would be very satisfied with eighth.

Comment #80What we acheived last year will stay with me until my dying days…it was magic and for the first time in 14 years I look forward to watching every game because I know I’m going to watch some decent football win lose or draw…but that miraculous escape is all history now and all our focus should be on developing the squad as quickly as possibly before all the restrictions on our growth voted in by all but us from the premier league owners kicks in and strangles us.
This is not a level playing field…we will continue to be targetted by the Premier League and they will continue to dream up ways of royally screwing us so we cant do what Man city and Man U and chelsea and spurs were previously allowed to do.
The owners should know that, and they should have done more in the summer, and they need to much better in January.
Our failure to get a euro slot this year will be an absulute catastrophy. Not only will it mean it will become harder to attract players, we simply wont be able to pay the big bucks for the players we want….and when we do and subsequently get charged by the Prem for breaching their new rules, we’re hardly going to get a fair hearing are we!…so that means we go to court but while we do we wont be able to buy anyone of note…so all we’ve done by not spending stupidly this summer is considerably set back our chances of a euro slot.
And yet you all say they’re doing a great job!
The only person doing a great job is Eddie…the rest are yet to prove themselve and from where I’m sitting they not doing great.
