Newcastle Disappointed Loan Move Was Blocked Late In Window

Despite being very pleased with Newcastle’s summer business, Eddie Howe was keen on adding more faces to his squad in the final days of the window. There was a last-ditch attempt to bring in West Ham’s right-back Harrison Ashby on deadline day as cover for the injured Emil Krafth.

The loan market was also scoured with Howe admitting domestic clubs were reluctant to do business with the rising Magpies. Here is what Howe said after the window closed:

“We are against everyone else. Domestic clubs didn’t want to be seen to be helping us.

“We’ll have to take that, that is part of where we are at the moment. I think we have certainly found there is no one there, ready to do us a favor.

“It’s the narrative regarding us that has changed. I think if there is anything domestically teams will put their price up if it is Newcastle.

“That is the same around the world, that is something we are having to deal with.

“That is why we have walked away from a few deals because I think it is important we are not seen as that club that will pay what is asked. I think it has to be fair.”

Fabrizio Romano has named Christian Pulisic as one of the domestic players Howe was keen on bringing in on loan. However, the move was blocked by new Chelsea owner Todd Boehly.

This is what the transfer guru told the Que Golazo podcast (which can be seen below):

“Strong interest from Newcastle. Newcastle were obsessed with Christian. They wanted him. But they wanted him on loan and not on a permanent deal. They wanted him on loan, maybe with a buy option, not mandatory. And this is why Chelsea decided to say no.”

Pulisic was forced to remain at Stamford Bridge but was reportedly furious at potential moves being blocked. With Thomas Tuchel recently being sacked, the American may find more opportunities under new manager Graham Potter.

If not, Pulisic may be targeted in the January window. A loan with an option to buy could be beneficial for both parties. The 24-year-old was just a late substitute in Potter’s debut, a 1-1 draw at home to RB Salzburg in the Champions League.

I think those fans you mentioned are jumping the gun somewhat. I think any final position that is within say 3 PTS of 7th would be an outstanding season. We could then say that we were robbed of Europe because of var. I love a good excuse me!

    sparky55,
In all due respect they have hired people seriously more qualified than me and you to tell them how to run the club, we’ve spent £200M since January and we have FFP to deal with, we need to steadily build our foundations. They’ve brought in the world’s number one expert to increase our sponsorship deals that will facilitate the build. You keep mentioning a Euro slot, did you read Dan Burn’s comments, nobody at the club is expecting a Euro spot. There are a minority of fans demanding way too much and it is those that aren’t enjoying the season, from comments read, it seems the vast majority are happy with the way things are progressing.

    sparky55,
There are all kinds of permutations, I think officially it’s 7th for that conference leagu slot but eighth can get you it, from who wins the cups.

7th I think sparks. Although I’m not too sure how the cup winners/runners up thing works these days.

I get what you say about attracting players without European football but your arguement discounts our documented strategy of ambitious youngster over expensive superstars. So attracting the best youngsters as well as developing our own through the academy is how I think our squad development will be over the next couple of seasons, smattered, of course, with the odd marquee signing.

Anyone who starts a sentence with “with all due respect” is never going say anything respectful! 🙂 🙂 🙂

I didnt say they’re rubbish and I didnt say we’ve employed a bunch of clowns…I said we missed a trick in the summer, we were mugged off by other Prem League clubs in the window and I said I dont think theyve done a good job so far and I said because they didnt spend big in the summer and because of Prem league rule changes they’re making the job harder for themselves.

I didnt say they wouldnt be able to do a great job…and what the players say publically is not necessarily what Eddie and the owners are saying privately.

Interesting how 10 different people can interpret the written word in 10 different ways.

Can anyone put up any quote from our owners about our so-called budget?
Because some on here are fukcin obsessed with it.
The owners said there was no budget and if the right players at the RIGHT price became available they would be in for him aka Isak.
Luke Edwards the clown tried to make up a budget as well and Eddie shot him down.
Then Keith Downie made up one and we signed Isak so he had to change what he was saying because it was bull crap.
Then this s…t excuse we spent 60 million odd on isak and went over our so-called budget because of Wilson’s injury, more crap why didn’t we just sign Pedro for 40 if that was the case?
People saying we wouldn’t spend over 30 million then we sign Isak and the backtracking started.

Vask…I think you underestimate the mind-set of your average middle eastern state ruler!

PIF are not the kind of people who like to grow organically…its all about being the biggest and the best…look how much they spent on the LIV tour and look how much they spent on signing up average Joe’s.

If they took that approach with us, we’d have spent 400 million in the summer.

Our ultimate owner will be pushing hard…harder than me I can assure you!

Ps…I’m very much enjoying the season…we play a lovely brand of football which when we swap out our average players for excellent players becomes the blueprint for continued success.

Im lovibg what were doing on the pitch…just not so enamoured with what we’re doing off the pitch THUS FAR.

Lets hope we make some progress off the pitch soon.

I don’t estimate anything to do with middle Eastern state rulers.

So what are they going to do if they don’t get their way?

Good question…they wont give up on it…they’ll lose face.

They will keep on throwing money at it (as much as they are allowed) and they will no doubt “test” the rules just like Man city did…but they wont rest until they’ve won the league and then the CL.

    Winning is the only option

Well then the future is bright.
Just let’s hope they don’t get all itchy trigger finger and start peddling managers left, right and centre a la Everton or Watford (slightly different I know).

I think our infrastructure as definitely improved over the last 11 months at least. So we are, to use a phrase I hate, getting there. 🙂

I, too, am enjoying watching us this season. Even down to the way different teams approach us now. I suppose as fans we can only really enjoy the moments that are presented to us. To start living in the undecided future is like wishing one’s life away. 100 – 200 minutes of football per week to savour and judge and discuss.

    sparky55,
I’ve re-read a couple of your posts and you keep saying that you didn’t say Howe wasn’t wasn’t doing a good job and that the new owners aren’t doing a good job. I haven’t said you were saying that in my exchanges with you, I’m suggesting though, that I think you’re asking for too much too quickly.

We currently have 8 points from 7 games, the next few games should give a reasonable indication as to how the season will end up and what action is necessary in the next transfer window.

    Fulham – Away
    Brentford – Home
    Man Utd – Away
    Everton – Home
    Spurs – Away
    Aston Villa – Home
    South’pton – Away
    Chelsea – Home
    Leicester – Away
    Leeds – Home
    Arsenal – Away
    West Ham – Away (Postponed)

My “best guess” for the results of those games would generate 18 points, giving us a total of 26 points from the first 19 games.

    Interesting times ahead!?

They hinted that they reacted to Wilsons injury by buying Isak, surely they never intended to go in to the season with just Wilson though.
