After missing group training on Wednesday due to an injury, Alexander Isak has withdrawn from the Sweden national team according to The Athletic. The extent of the injury is unknown at this point.
Isak was able to train alone yesterday and was then assessed by Sweden’s medical team before the decision to withdraw. Sweden faces Serbia on Saturday and Slovenia on Tuesday in Nations League matches.
The 23-year-old said the following after withdrawing from the squad:
“It feels very sad to have to leave the team.
“I had longed to play in the blue and yellow shirt again. I wish the boys the best of luck on Saturday and Tuesday.”
With Isak at least running on Wednesday, his injury may not be too serious. Though it is a concern for Eddie Howe as Newcastle have struggled to keep their star players fit over the past month.
Callum Wilson is expected to return at Fulham after the break while Bruno Guimaraes made his return against Bournemouth last weekend. Allan Saint-Maximin’s prognosis is uncertain as the winger suffered a setback from his hamstring injury.
The early season injury woes have cost Newcastle, who have not scored in open play for the previous two matches, both draws. Newcastle have picked up just one win, the opener against Nottingham Forest. They currently sit 10th in the league table.

Comment #41Nij, you know, I don’t care. Clubs pay the wages of footballers and my personal view is that they owe their 1st allegiance and loyalty to their employers.
After that, if they prove good enough, by all means get call ups to National squads, but not when injured or to the detriment of the clubs. Playing stupid “friendlies” @ whatever level is just barking in my opinion. How often to key players get injured playing in friendlies that results in them missing crucial club games? – I know that hasn’t been an issue to us in last 14 years, but will become a big one moving forward. World Cups, including qualifiers, fair enough, friendlies – they can shove em for me! 😉

not sure if he had superior fitness / sports science people around him but injuries seemed to get almost completely eradicated under rafa.

I had the pleasure of playing 11 a side with Bogie. The guy was amazing and he was ‘past it’ then. I was shouting for the ball, he looked up, saw it was me and thought ‘no’, and beat 3 players before passing to someone else
Ace , great post!
Was watching the boys from the 70s last night on Utube. My first kit – hooped socks and the two white stripes on the shorts. I was so proud.
Loved seeing Barraclough again. He was special.

Comment #46Rotonda, i feel Bruce had as many injuries as Eddie – maybe less! 🙂
Maybe there is science in the hobnobs and tea and 3 days off approach?
🙂
Im beginning to wonder of they are being overtrained but obviously we dont have the stats. They seemed to train every day last season….is that still the case?

Comment #47Thanks Rom, always good to come back with a rant 😆
Was going to stay off until “real” football renewed, but got drawn in. 🙂
Managed to avoid the interminable VAR discussion though, kept my powder dry on that one. 😀

Hard to have too much of a go at Eddie when he’s obviously working very hard to improve our fitness levels. However, this ever lengthening list of hamstring injuries to our most key players is a concern and does kind of hint towards ”over use” injuries. We’re not a team who can properly challenge without St Max, Bruno, Isak, Wilson et al. Not when the bench is murphy, fraser, ritchie.

Comment #55Ref. Shelvey. I have said this before. His running style, slightly stooped, gives a false impression of his effort and indeed speed.. Personally, I believe we need him back asap. Midfield of him, Bruno and Billy Joel is ok with me.
Then, Defence already sorted.
Then attack ASM, CW and Izak
That is a pretty good team

Give me one year in the last 10 that we have not had a spate of Hammies.
Is it our training pitches? I have no idea. It has been going on for years.

It’s more his giving up possession in dangerous places, fouling to get it back, bad back passes, hospital balls, discipline.

I think it shows great commitment to our cause and his playing career here and as fans we can’t ask more of him. I’m just pointing out that he has been roundly criticised and his U21 boss sounds like he’s raging. I hope it doesn’t affect him in the future.

Rafa didn’t have ASM and Wilson to skew the figures, have you looked in to our injuries compared to other teams over the same period.

Comment #70Nij, aye I thought the U21 boss went a little OTT given they were just friendlies. I don’t think it will harm his career path to the full team when he’s playing regularly and well for us.
