Newcastle Need Good News On Injuries Ahead Of Congested Schedule

The injuries continue to pile up for Newcastle United. The latest scare is striker Chris Wood’s early departure in New Zealand’s friendly defeat against Australia yesterday. Hopefully, his early substitution was precautionary.

Wood joins Bruno Guimaraes and Alexander Isak, who picked up injuries during international duty. Guimaraes remained with Brazil and may be able to play in Tuesday’s friendly against Tunisia. Isak returned to Tyneside last week with his undisclosed injury.

Newcastle entered the break with injuries to a number of players. Elliot Anderson was forced to withdraw from the Scotland U21s due to a knock that kept him out of the Bournemouth draw.

Anderson is expected to be fine for Fulham next weekend. The trip to Craven Cottage is also the target return date for Callum Wilson, who started strongly with 2 goals in the opening 3 matches. Wilson hasn’t played since the Manchester City draw.

Allan Saint-Maximin went to Monaco last week to work with a specialist. He posted a video of himself doing individual drills. Hopefully, it won’t be too long before the Frenchman is available.

Fingers crossed that none of the recent knocks to our internationals are serious. Eddie Howe has been limited in recent weeks due to the rash of injuries to star players. That has likely cost points with no goals from open play in the last two games.

There are nine matches, including the Carabao Cup, until the World Cup kicks off. If Newcastle can get these players fit, we could be in excellent shape when the six-week break rolls around.

People might scoff but a Chris Wood injury wouldn’t be good news at all, if Isak is also doubtful we have to rely on Wilson for 90 minutes.

    From previous

I put the article up the page before you posted that mate and I said the exact same that when Isak became available we moved on from Pedro and brought one of our top targets in. Howe has wanted Isak since January but knew then like Botman that it was nigh impossible to do.

Still tho mate you want have anyone hold their hands up and admit they were wrong.

They will stick there 10 inch heels deeper in the mud and still go on and on and on and…

I’d play no striker like City play and do more work within the midfield and even if Wood was our only option.

It’s not the end of the day if we can’t play a recognised striker up top

Aye, I’m sure Howe hinted that the Wilson injury forced them to rethink the Isak situation.

I don’t think they would of spent 60-odd million on a player because Wilson got injured for 3 games.
A bit of cop on needed there now.
Why not just loan a player?
He was our number one choice for months and he obviously became available .

The Toon manager said: “Naturally with Callum’s injury – which we don’t believe to be serious, by the way, we’re hopeful that Callum will only be out for a couple of weeks – but naturally we acted slightly off that in terms of we were always looking for attacking players, but it changed our focus maybe slightly on the type.

“But we’re delighted to hopefully sign Alex, who will be a big player for us.”

So in other words we wanted him anyways but it pushed along the negotiations when Wilson got injured

So like I and others have said he was a target regardless of Wilson’s injury

Looks like we would have had Pedro if Wilson was serviceable according to wor Eddie.

I think they should have just brought both in, I wonder why they pulled back from doing that

“Wilson, meanwhile, is facing a spell on the sidelines and while Howe has insisted his injury is not serious, he admits that situation did add urgency to the pursuit of Isak”
That says to me that Etikite was the main target, that obviously never happened, then they went for Pedro who probably wasn’t expected to step straight in for Wilson if needed as he lacks experience. They’ve obviously thought Isak was over priced so looked elsewhere, Wilsons injury has forced our hand to go for the more experienced and expensive Isak, I’m glad they did mind.

So we didn’t go for Pedro due to him not being able to step up and replace Wilson for 3 games?
But our main target Ekitike never played in the premier league and has played only a handful of games?
Ye right that’s what is is alright.

    Toon fans bad,
With a fit Wilson it allows a player like Pedro, with not a great deal of big league experience time to bed in, in their pursuit of first Etikite and then Pedro I think this is the type of forward and price bracket they wanted. Wilson’s injury reinforced the urgency of needing to pay the money required for an international striker with heaps of big league experience.

Even though Isak was linked with us since January and reports in Spain said Real Sociedad wanted his release clause met.
But it’s all to do with Wilson’s injury they dropped their price.
Jesus we should of done that the whole transfer window.
We will get Diaby now for 30 mil just say maxi is injured in January.

I read the same about Isak. Maybe we were looking to get Pedro but then the injury to Wilson made them change tack and go back for Isak.

Funny how some people believe players & managers like the gospel when it suits them but totally ignore the other times…

I obviously don’t know the truth about the whole transfer decisions (none of us do) but I know what was said.

    Nij,

Aah, forgot about the Etikite fiasco! I wonder if the Etikite saga had ended early doors we would have both Pedro and Isak now. I think Dan Ashworth should just give selling teams and the players agents hard deadlines going forward and just move on to the next swiftly. Wasted a shit load of time on the Etikite fool.

So Romano went too early with his exclusive. As the more logical people said.

As TDS said, people on here will always believe whatever version suits their narrative.

Maybe Romano might not rush it next time, because Edwards Burt and the Daily Mail guy were correct. And he wasn’t.

I read we has a 50 million budget and then I read we had a 90 million budget.
Then I read we only had 30 million to spend on a player and we wouldn’t go above this.
I guess some chose to believe what they want to suit ones agendas

    Tyran21,

Aye, it does give rise to the question why did Sociedad suddenly drop their release clause. Might have offered the cash in a oner I suppose, instead of a structured deal and it was too good to turn down, especially if there was no other credible suitors for Isak.

    Munster Mag,
The evidence is there, we went for both Etikite and Pedro in the £30M ish bracket, young players who can play with a CF.

“but it changed our focus maybe slightly on the type”
So after Wilsons injury we were forced to pay the big money for Isak who can play with a CF, Howe pretty much says so himself.

Pedro, Ekitike and Isak can and do all play in the same positions.
Isak call play wide left as can the other two.
So if we had a so-called budget why didn’t we just sign Pedro it would of made more sense.
60 odd games in English football young ul and coming player?
Maybe it had note to do with our number one target becoming available.
    Makes sense really .

But I think there are a lot of us who admit that we don’t know too much and we’re just speculating really. Just a small minority who like to make out they know stuff because they read it on Twitter or it suits their agenda.

I’m happy just talking to a fellow Toon fan where we’re both relatively ignorant about what’s going on behind the scenes. Can’t get annoyed or aggressive when you both admit you don’t know much…

Because we had a budget, like any business, and a proven international became available at the time of the injury, so we used the budget to sign him, and shelved Pedro. We still could do with Pedro who cansy 3 or 4 positions but we used up funds. I think Chris Waugh said same.
