The injuries continue to pile up for Newcastle United. The latest scare is striker Chris Wood’s early departure in New Zealand’s friendly defeat against Australia yesterday. Hopefully, his early substitution was precautionary.
Wood joins Bruno Guimaraes and Alexander Isak, who picked up injuries during international duty. Guimaraes remained with Brazil and may be able to play in Tuesday’s friendly against Tunisia. Isak returned to Tyneside last week with his undisclosed injury.
Newcastle entered the break with injuries to a number of players. Elliot Anderson was forced to withdraw from the Scotland U21s due to a knock that kept him out of the Bournemouth draw.
Anderson is expected to be fine for Fulham next weekend. The trip to Craven Cottage is also the target return date for Callum Wilson, who started strongly with 2 goals in the opening 3 matches. Wilson hasn’t played since the Manchester City draw.
Allan Saint-Maximin went to Monaco last week to work with a specialist. He posted a video of himself doing individual drills. Hopefully, it won’t be too long before the Frenchman is available.
Fingers crossed that none of the recent knocks to our internationals are serious. Eddie Howe has been limited in recent weeks due to the rash of injuries to star players. That has likely cost points with no goals from open play in the last two games.
There are nine matches, including the Carabao Cup, until the World Cup kicks off. If Newcastle can get these players fit, we could be in excellent shape when the six-week break rolls around.

Comment #81😆 what’s this mad obsession with a WhatsApp group…?
I’d admit it if there was ever such a thing why wouldn’t I…? But there is no WhatsApp group that I’m involved in with anyone on here.
Bit weird to go on and on and on about it like but the people who are certainly come across as obsessive and weird.
They do like to fish tho but keep on pulling up old boots and bike wheels instead of any record breaking carp

That seems to be the case. Also the fees for Pedro seems to be keep shifting, while for whatever reason Sociedad dropped Isak’s price. Surely Newcastle jumped at the chance.

Wasn’t someone from the top quoted with saying we want to buy the next Mbappe rather than paying the silly money involved to get the man himself. I think this is where Ashworth will really earn his corn, when you look at some of the players Brighton have got, that is on a different budget to us as well. He’s targeting players from a much bigger pool now he has our wealth behind him and unlike Brighton we don’t have to sell.

Comment #87So only now Eddie is realising Wilson is injury prone.
He managed Wilson for most of his career and now it just suddenly dawned in him?
Again a bit of common sense needed .

Comment #88Moanster scouring the horizon for somebody to have a ruck with – he cannot help himself. ( especially when he’s sloshed – most days)
I could imagine him walking along the street and if a passer by looked at him – Moanster would go into attack mode shouting and screaming “Who the F*** are you looking at”.
The passer by would then run back to school chased by that horrible ogre.
He needs medical intervention.

Comment #91Ledge – what some people are saying is based on what Eddie himself said. That after Wilson’s injury, the club made a change to their tactics for signing a forward. I don’t think he went into detail about that but he seemed to insinuate that they decided to spend a little more on Isak rather than get Pedro.
Look it up online if you haven’t already.

Guess that’s why Newcastle got in so many youngsters and still continuing looking for more. Not easy though, Chelsea tried but failed terribly. They got in the players but kept the wrong ones and let go the good ones.

Comment #93TDS…I have looked it up.
We were linked to Pedro before Wilson’s injury.
We were also linked to Isak we’ll before that.
It had been reported in Spain that Sociedad would not sell Isak and his release clause of 90 million euros had to be met.
It has also been said they dropped their price tag due to us agreeing on a deal for Pedro which makes sense really.
Otherwise why the change in price?

Comment #94If Sociedad had insisted like they were doing that his release clause had to be met, Isak would not be here now we would of signed Pedro .

Comment #95Ledge – linked sminked. We were linked to 100s of players and most of them were total BS.
You’ve read what Eddie has said, that the Wilson injury made them change tack on their transfer plans. So, do you believe what Eddie says or you think he’s making up stories so nobody knows what the club is doing or why?

Howe and the owners will of always knew they’d have to replace Wilson.
Pedro was lined up to join the squad and all agreed on waiting for the NUFC owners to confirm the deal but Sociedad put out the message they would sell Isak a player we have always had an interest in and one that Eddie always wanted. The Pedro deal stalled and we brought in Isak. The rest is history and in the middle of all that Wilson got injured.
That pretty much sums it up

Comment #101Ledge – that’s fine. I tend to agree that we can’t trust managers or owners when they make statements on things like that because sometimes it doesn’t make sense for them to tell the truth. But what sense would it make for him to lie? Why not simply say that the club retained an interest in Isak and he became available at the right price so they signed him? Why even mention Wilson in this context?

No matter the circumstances I’m really glad they’ve got him, if Wilson doesn’t manage 30 games again this season I’d like to see him moved on and a quality striker tailor made for Isak brought in.

Even the ones debating it have said the same that in the not to distant future Wilson will have to be replaced with a top end striker as he just can’t see out a season. Every player pre Howe knows their time could be up with the likes of Lascelles, Shelvey and Lobby all saying the same.
We’ve both said many times that if a good deal is presented and a player comes available that the club will act and that’s exactly what happened.

Comment #105I could also make up a story and one that Howe even backs up…
Wilson was fit and scoring while Wood was fit as a backup, the club decided to spend around £30m for a young and promising forward to complement those 2 players and other attacking players. Then Wilson gets injured and they realised they would be throwing Pedro in at the deep end and potentially leading the line. So they decided to spend more on a more experienced striker. Yeah

Comment #107Nijmegen – Wilson might be kept as an impact player for a while yet. Not sure who would buy him really, with his serious injury problems.
If Howe continues to play the formation he has so far, then we only need 2 strikers in the squad really. What we also need is different types of forwards who can play out wide.

Comment #110TDS….why would he say that?
We were getting as Eddie said priced out of it by some clubs on price.
So it made sense to say we had to go big for Isak due to Wilson’s injury.
Why would any manager talk about money available when the price went up as soon as we bid for them?
We spent 60 million on a striker and the manager used another player’s injury as part of the reason why.
Clever imo as we were in for Maddison etc and Leicester were after more money.

Comment #114Ledge – if what you are saying is correct, I’d be fuming if I was Pedro, his agent, or Watford. You’re basically suggesting that our club used the signing of Pedro purely to drive down the price for Isak. That sounds a bit crappy in my opinion. I also don’t believe that’s what happened.
