Mykhaylo Mudryk’s meteoric rise over the past year has planted him high on many clubs’ wishlists. Mark Douglas, in his latest for i, is hearing from sources that Newcastle are definitely one of those clubs.
The 21-year-old is expected to be in high demand when the winter window opens. The Premier League is most likely where he’ll land, if not in January then almost certainly next summer.
In addition to the Magpies; Arsenal, Brentford, Everton, and Liverpool are all contemplating moves for the Ukrainian. Brentford had a bid knocked back in August with Shakhtar wanting close to £50m for their budding superstar.
That is a significant price tag for a player who was relatively unknown this time last year. However, his qualities are made for the English game. He won’t turn 22 until January so his ceiling is very high.
Newcastle are in the market for a winger to match the game-changing ability of Allan Saint-Maximin. Bayer Leverkusen’s Moussa Diaby is also a potential target and would be an equally stunning addition.
In addition to a winger, Newcastle want someone to unlock defenses as well as a defensive midfielder. These priorities won’t all be addressed in January. Splashing out £50m on one target could hinder other arrivals.
However, a player like Mudryk could make an instant impact similar to what Bruno Guimaraes did last January. Newcastle could also look at bargain deals to offset Mudryk’s outlay such as Lyon’s Houssem Aouar.
A deep-lying midfielder may be able to wait until next season with Jonjo Shelvey primed for his return. Aouar’s creative ability is more pressing as is another attacking threat to combine with or cover for Allan Saint-Maximin.
Aouar will have just six months left on his contract in January. Lyon will not be able to haggle too much on a fee as he’ll be off for nothing in the summer. A combination of Mudryk and Aouar would be an accomplished window that addresses pressing needs.

Comment #41The F.A should show a pair and put him, and us out of our misery.
I wasn’t looking forward to this World Cup anyway, for mainly timing reasons.
Though it would have been nice to go into it with some hope..

Comment #54If it’s any consolation then Pope was never going to get the nod while T Rex was fit, but I don’t think Pope will start again after that. You don’t get that many chances when there’s other competition and unfortunately Pope blew his. Hopefully we show him loads of support on Saturday.

Comment #55Pope looks a bit nervy. Maybe it’s the dysfunctional defence in front of him, or he feels like he had to try and be too perfect…not sure. He definitely hasn’t played his normal game

Comment #57Bellingham is pure class, Two players I’d above any others in the early I’d love at nufc are Bellingham and Musiala. I get the feeling Musiala will never leave Germany though. I just think he’s going to be one of those players.

Comment #60Honestly if Maguire goes to the World Cup England are fcuked.
Southgate, take big Dan. You may need him with his silky play out of defense and those long legs tackling and add the height for corners for and against. Dan Burn The player for any World Cup manager.

Comment #64I didn’t see the game but I did watch the last one and Bellingham didn’t stand out.
The commentator couldn’t stop mentioning the number of games he had played in the Bundesliga though.
Sancho hasn’t exactly set the prem on fire but I haven’t seen any Jarmin games to know how good Bellingham is.
Any Bundesliga watchers out there?

Comment #65Sometimes you watch an England game and know a player has played his last game.
Pope looks nervous wreck playing for England.
I hope it does not affect his Toon form. Southgate would rather pick Ronnie Corbett

Comment #68A good confidence boost for England before the World Cup but it’s probably going to paper over the cracks of the problems with Southgate’s team selection. Why he is selecting Maguire when he’s completely out of form and not even getting a game for Man U is a complete mystery – he was directly responsible for Germany’s first 2 goals. Even more annoying is when Southgate first got the job he said he would select players on their current form but NO he’s done what every other England manager has done and selected his favourites!

Comment #73Agree with the comments about Maquire – he has not played well for a long time he needs dropping.
Southgate is a right knacker he needs firing. One or two say support him but expect he will fail in the World Cup. If that is the case why not peddle him now and get somebody else in- he’s bloody useless.

Comment #75What does failure look like for England at the World Cup? For me a quarter final place is the minimum expectation, par. Anything less is failure. Getting knocked out at the quarter final is average.

Comment #76Bit gutted for Pope, he’s been excellent in the PL all round but fluffed his lines last night. He’s not the first England keeper to do so and won’t be the last. All the travelling fans on Saturday need to show him some love to let him know the toon army are right behind him.

Comment #80Shame Pope didn’t grab his chance to seemingly cement himself as number 2 to Pickford. I think I read that Pickford hasn’t made a single mistake leading to an England goal so that’s why Southgate sticks with him.
Maguire on the other hand…it’s one thing being loyal, another playing a player who hasn’t let you down, and another picking a player who fits your style of play BUT when a player is woefully out of form for his club, making mistakes for his country, and seems shot of confidence, he can’t continue to be selected. I’d love him to come good again but he can’t go to the World Cup on current form let alone start.
