The Telegraph is reporting that Newcastle continue to pay a large portion of wages for players that departed this summer. That includes Dwight Gayle who left for Stoke City on a permanent transfer.
Dwight Gayle – £60,000pw
Jeff Hendrick – £50,000pw
Isaac Hayden – £50,000pw
Ciaran Clark – £40,000pwIn most cases, Newcastle ?? are still paying around two-thirds of these wages.#TelegraphFootball

The fact Newcastle are paying much of the wages for players out on loan is not a big surprise. The club have had tremendous difficulty offloading fringe players over the past few years.
This summer they didn’t mess around and found loan clubs for Ciaran Clark, Issac Hayden, and Jeff Hendrick; players who were not going to make the 25-man squad. From another angle, Newcastle saved money by moving them out.
In the case of Hayden, his move includes a purchase option. Though he has yet to feature this season due to more problems with his longstanding knee issue. Hayden was left out of the 25-man squad last winter for another operation on his knee.
While the figures are staggering, only Gayle is no longer tied to the club. Hendrick will return from Reading next summer while Clark will see out the final year of his contract on loan with Sheffield United. He too has struggled with injuries at Bramall Lane.
For Gayle to agree to move to Stoke, which would be a significant pay cut, Newcastle have apparently agreed to pay some of his wages to lessen the difference. It’s not ideal, but Newcastle would have had to pay his full wages had he stayed behind.

Kuol will need a work permit – details here:
https://worldfootballindex.com/2020/12/work-permits-premier-league-post-brexit-english-clubs-efl-libertadores/
Within the above article I did find the following statement interesting:
Given the limits on the number of U21 players a Premier League side can sign in one season, this could lead to many of the richest clubs attempting to create football empires similar to that of City Football Group, using their other clubs around the world to sign players the English side is unable to.
This form of football imperialism will see the superclubs extend their footprint across the globe, and many will now have their eye on lower-profile clubs in South America and Europe with a view to adding them to their franchise.
This will only increase the global commercialisation of football as a business rather than a game. Players become commodities, even more than they already are, shipped around in order to increase their value in order to help a handful of big clubs make even more money.
I wonder if we will go down this route like City and Red Bull.
On a sort of related note does anyone know if still have some special relationship with Dalian Shide? I remember Shepherd set something up 20 odd years ago, not heard anything about it for years though.

I honestly will miss Lawro. A mate and I often bet on random games in the Euros and World Cups to add a bit of extra excitement to games we might otherwise be neutral about. We have been doing this since the 2002 World Cup. Several years ago we added the rule that if you win a bet due to the team you bet on winning by the exact score that Lawro predicted the loser of the bet had to pay you double (since we knew it was so unlikely)
This only ever happened once in the 2018 and I won that bet, turned my £10 to a £20, at least my pal can never get me back now.

Comment #17On the wages topic at least Clark will be off our books at the end of the season and hopefully Hayden will sign permanently for Norwich, leaving us with only Hendrick who we potentially need to continue to shell out for next season.
Shocked to hear we are paying some of Gayles wages though, I have never heard of that happening when it is a permanent transfer. Shows he is a bloodsucking leech! – we would not have offered that unless he basically said “I am not going to Stoke for those wages, I am happy to sit on my arse here without a squad number” Disgusting!!

Comment #23Nijmegen, Perhaps but the quote says wages and ultimately that is all just terminology. The basic point is we are paying for a player we don’t have a contractual relationship with and who has a permanent contract with a rival club. not small change either approx £40k per week if the article is correct.

I said all along that I bet we’d had to pay him to leave, there’s no way he was terminating his own contract for free to take less wages elsewhere.

I didn’t count Ritchie as he not mentioned in the article, is not on loan and has a squad number. He is our latest casualty though, I read yesterday he is injured.
🙁
Agree on Hendrick, can’t see him going anywhere permanently until his contract ends at the end of next season. The bigger concern would be if Hayden played that game, he has a contract until 2026. I don’t think he will though as he is younger and I think he actually wants to play football so will take a permanent deal if offered, I suspect.

Comment #32It’s really does sicken you how bad this club was run with the odious creature as owner, when you read the article and that lot are on a combined 200k a week eh? That is criminal, it really was fatty holding on to the championship players upped their money rather than get rid and bring in EPL quality but allowed Rafa to work with just about the same team that got us promoted? Again criminal!
Gutted we are still paying £133,000 a week for that ramshackle bunch mind you. It’s like fatty left a turd in your sitting room just before he sold to you.
So on a positive, and it is a fookin big old positive It makes you even more happier that we were taken over by the best possible people doesn’t it. Things are now done on a professional level from top to bottom.

Comment #33I do get the reality of the Gayle situation, it was always likely we would have to pay to get rid of him, doesn’t mean I have to like it though.
I suppose it is better than him being here and us paying all his wages even when he cant get into the squad but however you look at it we are getting ripped off.
At least Chris Wood only has a contract until the end of next season so the new owners are seemingly not falling into the same trap.

Comment #35Nijmegen-toon @24 there is that aspect, but many love the sport football and therefore should be desperate to play regardless of how much they’re being paid.
It’s a mess at the club due to the the previous regimes decisions. Sooner players like Gayle Hendricks go the better. Roll on a time where nufc have no hanger-on-ers.

Comment #39Couldn’t agree more Fenham, the sooner every remnant of the fat one is gone the better.
This is a large part of the reason why becoming a top club will take time, we had to start from a terrible position in every aspect of how the club was being run. The only silver lining was that we made a profit in those dark days which helps a little bit with FFP. But even that is a false economy, we would have been better off with less profit and more decent players.
