Dominant Newcastle take a 3-0 lead into the half at Craven Cottage with goals from Wilson, Almiron, and Longstaff. Fulham have barely had a sniff of the Newcastle end and have been under assault even before going down to ten men early.
The lads played in the 4-3-3 with Pope in goal in front of Trippier, Schar, Botman, and Burn. Guimaraes started deep in the midfield with Willock and Longstaff pushing forward. Wilson led the line with Almiron on his right and Murphy on the left.
Newcastle started well and had a golden chance for an early lead within 5 minutes. A free-kick was bombed into the area and the rebound landed to Burn who whipped a shot in. The ball fell to Wilson, whose stabbed effort struck the far post.
Just moments after the chance, Fulham went down a man. Nathaniel Chalobah lunged in late on Sean Longstaff catching his foot. Chalobah was initially given a yellow but after a pitchside review, the card was upgraded to a red.
Wilson struck in the 11th minute to make it 1-0. Willock played a crossfield pass to Trippier who put in a cross back that Willock got to at the back post. The midfielder’s header homed in on the far corner where Wilson tapped it in. The goal was checked for offside but given.
Twenty minutes in and it was all Newcastle. The Magpies have dominated possession and kept Fulham without a shot. Howe’s team selection has paid off with both Longstaff and Murphy active in the early stages.
Wilson had another chance come close in the 26th minute. The ball fell to the striker in the box. He turned and one-timed a shot that sailed just over the inviting goal.
In the 33rd minute, Newcastle stretched the advantage to 2-0 with a wonder strike from Almiron. The Paraguayan combined with Guimaraes, who looped his return pass into the left side of the box. Miggy volleyed the ball with his left inside the far post.
After the goal, Aleksandar Mitrovic was forced off. The former Magpie had struggled with a foot injury during the international break. Carlos Vinicius was brought on in the 37th minute.
Longstaff made it 3-0 in the 43rd minute. Botman came close to opening his account as his header from a corner ricocheted off the far post. Longstaff was there to slot it home as the onslaught continued.
Before the halftime whistle, Fulham withdrew Kevin Mbabu and Layvin Kurzawa, both on their first Premier League start of the season. It has not been a good reunion for Mitrovic and Mbabu as Newcastle have been thoroughly dominant in the opening half.

We needed and deserved a game like this with all the effort the lads have been putting in.

Those sating we were doomed with that team will lose respect if they to bring the red card into being 3-0 up.
Plenty of teams struggle against 10 men, we have totally dominated and been ultra professional – moving the ball around, making them run, and then BAM.
Willock, Murphy, Miggy and Burn all showing well.
If we get a 4th early on this could 6 or 7.

Comment #26I wouldn’t say playing against 10 men is an excuse for a win and should be written off as good management.
The side played against 10 men quite a few times under Bruce, and I can recall Bruce not being able to push the advantage with 11 against 10. I could be wrong, but I think Bruce had 11 against 10 in a cup game against lower league opposition (don’t remember who), and the opposition still looked more dangerous with the ball.
