BBC pundit Garth Crooks has already put out his Team of the Week despite this evening’s battle at the bottom between Leicester City and Nottingham Forest. Crooks has named Miguel Almiron in his best eleven for the weekend.
Almiron came within a fraction of a hat-trick with a third goal ruled offside. Miggy’s brace helped Newcastle to the 4-1 win over ten-men Fulham, who had Nathaniel Chalobah sent off inside of ten minutes.
Crooks has backed Newcastle for a top-six finish if they can continue their encouraging start to this season. He wrote the following about his selection of Almiron:
As for Miguel Almiron and the Newcastle fans, there are having the time of their lives. Playing like this Newcastle are capable of a top-six finish.
The win moved Newcastle to 7th in the league table just one point behind Manchester United, who have a worse goal difference but a match in hand. The Magpies are within striking distance of a place in the top four with Brighton just three points ahead.
There is a long way to go before Newcastle can think about finishing in the top six. The start to this season has been an encouraging one with Eddie Howe making major strides in implementing his style of play. This season is about tangible progress and so far, so good.
Here is a look at the rest of Crooks’s Team of the Week.

My one & only claim to fame in this FPL malarkey is I did the double over that pesky Rom fella last season!
Which massively softened the blow of relegation for me! 😉 😀

Comment #15When discussing Bruce, don’t forget Ashley/NUFC paid a stupid amount to SheffWed to get him and his bunch of know nowt yes men to come to us – what abject stupidity!

Watching Miggys wonder volley from behind the Fulham goal sitting with the Fulham fans.
I think even if you’d been surrounded by mackems at the stadium of shite you’d have to stand up and applaud the goal. Just instinct and then you look for the exit. But Fulham are a friendly bunch.

I accounted for the £8M payoff. My point was simply that it cannot be true that Bruce earned £57M from us + Villa + WBA. To find he got £14Mish for that 2 years “work” he did at NUFC was just a shocking side effect of my calculation.
Two players: Vinícius Júnior + Haarland
?
Awwww…ok then: Chiesa + Ramos

Comment #19We are starting to fret about which 3 forwards start when all fit. For me it depends on form, fitness, training and who we’re playing. Sometimes the guys off the bench will win you the game. No one is a guaranteed first team pick.

Bot was brilliant but this game wasn’t exactly about a defensive display. We were a wall, granted, but Fulham were, unfortunately for them (10 men), exactly about a defensive display.
And, we were breaching their defence at will. Via the MF and attack, not so much our defenders.
I am happy that we’re learning how to do that. Until very recently we were surprised at us being on the front foot so we didn’t know what to do with the ball.

Comment #23I’d start with Almiron, Wilson & Isak – bringing ASM on for Wilson during the 2nd half when hopefully Brentford’s defenders are starting to tire.
Re a new deal for Wilson I’m almost sure that I read on News Now that Wilson had been given an upgraded contact to bring him in line with the higher earners in the squad.

Comment #24Cleverly, good point. I did not account for that as that money did not go in Bruce’s pocket and thus doesn’t count when debunking this twitter myth that he got £57M from us, Villa and WBA.
It does mean he cost us a lot more than £14M for those 2 years though. Google says we gave Sheff Wed £4M so that is approx £18M in total that Bruce cost us. FFS!!
I do recall saying to a mate at the time we hired Bruce “the only way NUFC should be paying £4M to bring Steve Bruce in would be if it was 1992 and we were getting Pallister as well”
🙁

@David_Ornstein
? Callum Wilson has signed new contract at Newcastle. 2yr deal + option to extend further based on various factors. Fresh terms move him in line with highest #NUFC earners. Club also want 30yo to help younger forwards develop in years ahead @TheAthleticUK https://t.co/YJYNesR3QX

Comment #29Callum Wilson on his England selection chance “I wasn’t available for selection for the last squads against Italy and Germany. I think if I was fit my performances would have had to stay at the level they were to get me in.” #NUFC
As much as I agree with Callum’s thinking I don’t think he has any chance of being called up under Southgate. Loves his reputation players rather than who is in form

Comment #33Grealish went after Miggy and slandered him whilst absolutely mortal drunk for no reason other than to have a go at his team mate Mahrez. What a clown that man is…
Hope Mr Alice Band seen that goal by Miggy on Saturday as it was a peach, an absolute worldie, just seen it again there and the more you see it, the better it looks. The way Miggy made his move as soon as he give the ball to Bruno was great understanding of one another. Boards so well for the future. Think it was AGM that mentioned just last thread there is a player in there re Miggy and I 100% agree.

I’ll third that re Fulham fans. The 2 elderly gentleman say next me had so much knowledge when I was chatting with them. Me missus said one smelled of lavender and the mints. I said that would be Murray mints. Haha
We celebrated all 6 goals ( I know 2 offside) not overly too much you have to have a certain degree of respect and them all around us didn’t make one complain. Great set of supporters and a great old fashioned stadium.
