Newcastle are back at St. James’ Park tomorrow as the club celebrates the anniversary of the takeover, which happened one year ago today. Brentford will hope to play spoilers on what will hopefully be an afternoon to remember.
Eddie Howe has shaped Newcastle into a formidable force with the aid of our ambitious new owners. He held his press conference this morning for tomorrow’s clash against the Bees.
Howe remarked on the one-year anniversary of the takeover saying the following per Newcastle’s Twitter account:
“The club’s come a long way. That positivity is still there. It’s a difficult thing to keep and everyone behind the scenes has done a very good job in putting the building blocks in place for what the club needs for long term success.”
The head coach provided an update on the injury situation that has plagued the start of this campaign. Despite missing Callum Wilson, Bruno Guimaraes, and Allan Saint-Maximin for stretches, Newcastle are still 7th in the league table.
Of the trio, only Saint-Maximin is yet to return while summer signing Alexander Isak missed last week’s dismantling of Fulham with a thigh injury. Both were not featured in Wednesday’s training images.
That may have been at Howe’s behest. He has confirmed that Allan trained well this week and has a chance of making tomorrow’s squad.
“He’s doing OK. He’s trained well this week and we’re pleased with him. He’s making good progress. There’s a chance he could be in the squad tomorrow.”
Unfortunately, it is too soon for Isak, whose injury is still preventing a return to full training. The Swede is making progress individually but has been ruled out for Brentford.
“He’s running on grass and increasing his speed so he’s in a good place. Hopefully, it won’t be too long.
“He suffered a muscle problem to his thigh and his scan wasn’t overly bad but the medical team are just being cautious with him at this moment.”
Howe also revealed that Jonjo Shelvey is preparing to return to training today. The midfielder has made great strides since undergoing hamstring surgery in pre-season. Here is the update on Shelvey:
“His recovery is going very well. He’s ahead of schedule and he’s hopefully going to be involved with us today in training for the first time. There will still be caution as to when he’s ready to play but he’s making positive strides at the moment.”
Howe could name the same team that destroyed Fulham last weekend. He probably won’t risk Saint-Maximin from the start but could give him a cameo if he passes his fitness test. Isak appears to still be a few weeks away while Jonjo will hopefully be back before the World Cup break.

Comment #5Vask – oh, I’m happy to hop off the fence sometimes and firmly plant my flag on one side or the other, I just think you’re a sheep if you think one side is 100% right or 100% wrong. I think the far left AND the far right are a bunch of dangerous and extreme muppets.

If you go too far in any direction it is easy to lose sight of the bigger picture.

Comment #25Can’t wait to get a full strength team out.
What’s peoples thoughts on signing a midfielder? Would you prefer a holding one so Bruno can play further upfield? Or a Maddison type with Bruno holding?
Have to be honest I’d take either. A holding one would probably cheaper, hopefully leaning a bigger budget for a winger.
I know he’s not young, but I’d absolutely love Zaha on a free in the summer!!

Comment #27Bruno can hold, dont want a typical defensive midfielder, will kill the fun.
Wonder if Eddie is saving Maxi and Isak to unleash onto Man Utd

Like you say I’d take either. And that winger/wide man you mention preferably a two footed one.

Comment #30Check, id prefer Bruno to hold and get someone higher up. But he’s so talented its hard to know what he cant do. One negative on him, in my opinion, is that he lacks pace although that’s nitpicking, but it does seem that way to me, given his other obvious talents like tackling, getting out of trouble, passing and making himself available for the ball. It may depend on who is available…ie if a Maddison level player is available, we wud go for him i think, and let Bruno stay deepish

I think Manu may come too soon for isak to start. Although I initially thought the match was mid week so there is an outside chance he’ll make it.
Would you drop Miggy to accommodate?

Comment #33Vask, if one winger, Id like to see someone who can operate on the left aswell as the right if possible. Id like to see Maxi on the right a bit more

Comment #35I’m ambivalent on what kind of central midfielder to sign. I think it depends on where Howe sees Bruno’s best position being and also the thinking around Anderson’s progression and best position. In fact, other questions regarding Longstaff and Shelvey come into the equation too. I’d definitely like to see a player signed who can play on the right wing though, maybe if Maddison is sign as doing both roles then he would be the perfect signing.

Just sometimes have to jump down and call out jingoism, it’s dangerous from both sides.
Good run that Vask, gotta be a record. 🙂
I love reading peoples view on stuff, from the middle, you’re a long way right of left, but you’re also a long way left of right. Best just to call out the extremes, try to stop the lunatics taking over the asylum. 😉

Comment #37I’m happy with maxi on the left currently. But I like the interchangeability option. Switch it up and give the defenders different things to think about. If you have two two footed widemen the predictibilty is feminised somewhat.

If you look at history when the poverty gap gets ridiculous either the far right or far left rise. Both awful extremes. But We’ve got one coming.
