Newcastle Monitoring England International’s Contract Situation

Newcastle are keeping tabs on Manchester United’s Luke Shaw according to an exclusive from Football Insider. The left-back is out of contract in the summer but the Red Devils have an option to extend for another year.

The England international’s place at Old Trafford has been unexpectedly usurped by summer signing Tyrell Malacia. Manchester United boss Erik Ten Hag has handed his compatriot starts in the last five league matches and all three in the Europa League.

Shaw was the first choice to start the campaign but was dropped after the Red Devils struggled out of the gate. Shaw has been resigned to just cameos ever since and has only 5 appearances this term.

The 27-year-old did feature for England over the international break starting in the 3-3 draw against Germany. Bukayo Saka got the nod at left wingback at Italy with Shaw replacing him late.

Newcastle have a bit of a glut at left-back with Matt Targett the current first-choice. Though Eddie Howe has gone with Dan Burn on a number of occasions while Jamal Lewis and Paul Dummett have rarely featured.

Shaw could be seen as an upgrade especially moving forward over the current crop. However, his financial demands could disrupt the wage structure, especially if he is not retained next summer and becomes a free agent.

His career has been a bit fitty and starty. If we could get 4 years out of him he may be worth a punt. It would probly improve target having that level of competition. If course Dan Burn is even a good option at lb

Burn has been excellent every time he has played. It gives us an extra dimension to our shape ability when he plays.

Horses for courses and Al that.

Dubs was on the bench last night. I think that’s as close as he will get to game time this season. Unless they play him in the coca cola cup.

Dubs was obviously not happy about us signing Pope as he saw himself as our No.1 and Eddie didn’t agree with that. Fair enough. Maybe he decided if he’s going to be sitting on the bench regardless (and also seeing that Pope rarely gets injured) that he’d rather be on Man U’s bench that ours.

    IMO!

There was a young man from the Smog
Who’s brain got all of a fog
    He’d rage and he’d rant
    And his loyal sycophants
Would threaten us all off the blog

    No thanks!

We are always linked with players like that now though – anyone with a contract coming to an end, high wages, struggling to retain a starting 11 place at big six club etc. These links are 99% wrong.

I see no need for a LB, maybe Howe sees it differently but if he does that surely means Lewis is a gonna.

In Jan I would only be expecting us to bring in 1 or 2 players (aside from youngsters like Kuol) and surely they will be a right sided forward and/or midfielder (CAM or DM)

On Lewis I watched him play for Northern Ireland vs Greece last week and I have to say he was not good. Unless of course he was specifically instructed to “wander around in completely the wrong areas of the pitch and make a concerted effort not to touch the ball” – in that case he was great.
