Newcastle have been linked with an interest in Stuttgart left-back Borna Sosa. Sport Witness has cited a report from Germany’s Bild that the 24-year-old has hit Eddie Howe’s wishlist.
Sosa is one of the Bundesliga’s best full-backs. The Croatian’s claim to fame is his prowess on set pieces and crossing ability as evidenced by his 31 assists in 96 appearances in Germany. He would perfectly balance the Toon attack opposite the eminent Kieran Trippier.
Newcastle are currently stocked at left-back with Dan Burn starring in the role during the magical run up the table. Last season’s star Matt Targett was signed permanently over the summer. Howes’s attacking option, Jamal Lewis, has featured sparingly.
Sosa is signed until 2025 though is reportedly keen to move on having been at Stuttgart since 2018 when he joined from Dinamo Zagreb for around £5m. He would command a much larger fee if Newcastle were to make a move next year.
Any interest in Sosa, who has 8 caps for Croatia and is in their World Cup squad, is likely for next summer. Eddie Howe has fashioned a close-knit group with Dan Burn and Matt Targett key factors in the cohesivity.
Serie A’s Atalanta and Inter Milan are also tracking the assist machine. Newcastle will have money to spend next summer and adding an attacking left-back could be on the agenda with Sosa a superb option.

Comment #1Raj – I’ve no idea how he got found out after all that time but surely people close to him would know about it. I’d imagine the FA had to compile some evidence and then get a court injunction to get hold of the proof before charging him? So that would take a while to do. But I bet it would have been spoken about by people truly ITK within football for a while. Teammates, managers etc.

Bonjour Mesdames et Messieurs!
I suggest as the PL we take a break…
Ok, i know, this one suck, but this is the world Cup!
You know, there’s eleven players in a football team, and eleven important events in my own life.
Two of them are the births of my little princesses the nine others are the world cups i seen ( starting with 86 in Mexico when i was five years old ).
So come on guys, i know it’s quiet sad this year, like a christmas during a war, bu t let’s try to enjoy even if it flies in the face of everything.
0k,let’s start with prognostics… according to you, which nation will rise as world champion?
( almost said NEW world champion, but i still hope it could be STILL world champion! ).
ALLEZ LES BLEUS! ALLEZ LES BLEUS! ALLEZ LES BLEUS!

Too much made of some of the gambling stuff. Not like the 70s when the boro keeper and centre halfs were gambling to throw games..

Comment #9Niafron – the Germans always seem pretty confident. They’re certainly in with a shout!
England have a chance too but I think they’re under more pressure than any other team. From what I’ve seen and from talking to fans of other countries, our fans put more pressure on our team than anyone else. It doesn’t matter what our team do, there will still be loads of criticism and they’re just going to have to block that out. Imagine if Saka or Rashford have to take a penalty after the racist abuse from missing the ones in the Euros?
That is one reason why I think it’s important to have a very steady England manager. Just focus and concentrate on doing the job rather than getting carried away. If many England fans had their way, England would play attacking full backs and about 6 attackers!

Comment #10Check – you serious? I don’t know the nature of the bets but it casts doubt on every game that he’s been involved in, not to mention providing inside information to place bets is against the rules. Imagine if everyone did that?
It’s over 200 bets FFS! It’s a simple line drawn for professional footballers and one he crossed over 200 times. They get paid a hell of a lot of money to play football and adhere to the terms of their very lucrative contracts. He deserves punishment and he’s also lucky enough to have a union that will get him any help he needs to break any addiction. Unlike average folks who would just be sacked for breaking the terms of their contract 200 times…

Comment #11Don’t know why people think footballers should be put on a pedestal and treated differently to you or I. If I signed a contract that prohibited me from placing bets on a related field (i.e. insider training in Financial Services), and I did it 200 times, I’d expect to be sacked immediately, blacklisted, and could even be sued or charged with a crime.

Comment #15Clint – no. Because there’s a tolerance level, because you can accidentally creep just above the speed limit, and because it’s once. 37mph in a 30 zone over 200 times, off with their licence.

Howe clearly doesn’t rate Targett. They dithered quite a lot before buying him l, after trying unsuccessfully to get 2 different left backs in.
Then he’s playing a centre back in his position.
I love BDB but I feel we lose so much going forward without a specialist left back. Great defender, but to improve we need a top left back.

Comment #18Hibbit – some people are just weirdly anti-authority. I mean, I don’t like being told what to do but some people just seem to defend individuals against authorities almost no matter what they do. This guy is a millionaire who has been accused of breaking the rules over 200 times and people are defending him? Weird.

Comment #28Clint – don’t start twisting things. I answered the question you asked already, which was a dumb question to compare allegedly breaking the rules over 200 times with betting to creeping over the speed limit by 1mph. You’re not stupid so you knew that was a facetious argument.
You think it’s pointless authority to prevent footballers from betting on football? There you go…please answer that question.

Comment #30Clint – you know full well that the tolerance on speeding is down the the measurement of the devices and potential error. A bet placed is a bet placed, it’s a deliberate action, creeping over the speed limit could be an accident, a mis calibrated speed sensor or a mis calibrated speedo in the car.
A better example would be driving through a red light. The amber light is there as a warning, there’s no excuse for driving through a red light. And if someone did that 200 times, 100% off with their licence.
Someone driving through an amber light 200 times is like someone logging onto a betting site or filling in a betting slip 200 times. They did nothing wrong. But they had a choice to stop or take it further.

As for having an opinion, that’s fine, but if your opinion is that Ronaldo would be a good signing for the Toon then my opinion is that you’re an idiot. My actual opinion is that you’re a troll and just looking for attention, which is working as some people seem to think you were serious…

Comment #33So, what’s the complete and utter laws on betting as a sportsperson…?
ToonDarnSarf
Nov 17, 2022 at 11:02 AM
Comment #34Clint – YES. If someone was found to break the speed limit (say 36mph in a 30 zone) once, then they might get away with it with 3 points and a fine. If they did it 200 times, then their licence would be taken away! It’s really quite simple. Same thing for going through a red light 200 times.
If Toney had placed 1 bet, he might just get away with a firm talking to, but it’s over 200 bets.

I purposely gave no definitive number.
You entered one to suit your claim.
I gave an example of ways we all break rules and you twist it to mean something more.
The number of times we ‘work” within tolerances has zero bearing on weather we’re busted for it.
It’s what effect it has and are we beyond tge tolerance.
Anyhoo… to reiterate, i only asked if it compromised ‘ANYTHING’?
I neitger condoned or condemned him for whatever he’s done, ‘cos i, personally, have not enough info…and to be perfectly frank, was just conversing, wuth somebody else about a football related topic on a daft football blog, for kicks.
I’m not here to be arbiter on all things.

Comment #38Clint – I posted you the FA rules. He allegedly broke them over 200 times so that is what is being investigated. There’s also precedence of punishments for people breaking the rules so that’s crucial too.
The tolerance level is crucial for the reasons I explained above (and you ignored). Tolerance level applies to breaking speed limits but not to something that’s black & white (like going through a red light).
