Garang Kuol made his World Cup debut in Australia’s 4-1 defeat against France last night. The 18-year-old came on for lone Aussie goalscorer Craig Goodwin in the 73rd minute.
The appearance was Kuol’s 2nd cap for the Socceroos. He made his debut against Chris Wood and New Zealand during the September international break. In entering the match last night, Kuol became the 9th youngest player in World Cup history.
France’s dominance after Australia took the early lead continued after Kuol’s entrance. France were pushing for more goals which meant little joy for the teenager up front with few touches.
After the match, Kuol spoke to CodeSports about his experience. The Shields Gazette has published the following from the young attacker.
“To see six-foot-four people as quick as me just shows the big difference between me and some of those players. Only hard work is going to mean making it to that level. Good to get that taste.
“It felt pretty long chasing France around! When I came on I was just excited to show what I can do. I think it’s something I need to look at with the coaches to see how I can get on the ball more.”
Next up for the Aussies is Tunisia, who battled Denmark to a scoreless draw yesterday. Hopefully, Garang will get another opportunity to shine this Saturday. While his debut was frustrating, it’ll be a valuable learning experience.
Kuol was also asked about his pending move to Newcastle United in January. He revealed that he continues to receive a lot of support from the Toon army. He even stated that he wears black and white shoes in support of his future club.
Australia forward Garang Kuol to @TheAthleticFC on joining Newcastle:
“I’ve been reading a lot of messages, a lot of support, people saying “Welcome to the Toon” and stuff. I’ll just send them a photo of these shoes!”https://t.co/E1adIoMpRR#FIFAWorldCup #Qatar2022 #AUS #NUFC pic.twitter.com/APsGcqsQWP

It also looks like Harry Kane’s scan on his ankle has shown no damage according to multiple reports. England goalkeeper Jordan Pickford also revealed that Kane took part in today’s session ahead of Friday’s match against the USA.

Raj, sorry to hear that about Adam. He can at least rest assured that he isn’t me as someone suggested.
Coming Home – yes sure I am in cahoots with Raj, munster, dazzler and anyone else you care to name. I am of course a vegan, despite my random but true posts in response to eating dogs and various other meats.
The question I have is this coming home: why bother? You acuse people of all sorts but we were mostly talking about footy. Then you showed up with:

Comment #215After we beat England in Foxboro in 1993, I approached David Batty to switch jerseys. He said, “Well, I don’t want yours!” I responded, “I still want yours because I want something to wipe my ass with.” That made him laugh. “I fookin’ like that!” he said, and took his jersey off. That’s the way this matchup works. For Americans, this one’s always more than just a game.
US v england from an American perspective.
Funny!

For the sake of the blog though I personally will draw a line under this total bollox. Prepare to be ignored by me CH and Mort. You have shown all I need to know.
On footy related matters (to everyone) if NUFC could sign just one significant player in Jan who should it be? Is Maddison still the number 1 target for most?

Comment #232Some good comments from Garang Kuol following his cameo against France.
“You could see the level that they’re at, they’re 6ft 4in people who are as quick as me, so there was a big difference between me and some of those players.
“Only hard work will get me to that level. I think it was a good taste to see the level the players are at. Some play in the Premier League, some play in the Champions League, so it was good to get that taste of the level.”

Comment #236Ronway, it is part of his education and a good part. Pleased to see him get on. His interception, dribble, run and pass showed some quality.
What I noticed about Kuol in his time on the pitch was he found 5+ yards of space on the right again and again and he was looking for a ball into him. He wasn’t hiding away.
Can’t judge a kid on so few minutes especially given the circumstances but I concur with Bills assessment overall.

Absolutely!
He’s just 18 years old, the very fact that he is considered ready to come on during a World Cup match is testament to his potential ability.
He can only benefit and improve from the opportunity.
Win! Win! for NUFC.

Comment #240Ronway, the key to Kuols development is for NUFC to find him a decent club in Europe who will play him regularly. I am sure NUFC have a plan for this.
